We closed on land!
It's been a while since I've talked about our land search...DH and I started out almost two years ago looking for some acreage, preferably with an old house on it, as my dream is to restore an old house. After a year or so, it was clear that the perfect old house on the perfect land probably does not exist, so we started looking for acreage only, with the hope of moving an old house to it. Finally, today, we closed on 14 acres on a beautiful hillside, and hopefully the old house dream will follow.

Here's pic 1 - from the top of the hill.

LAND HOOOOOO!!!! HOW EXCITING. YOU HAVE A HILL WITH A LOVELY VIEW. THAT OLD HOUSE, OR PERHAPS A NEW ONE, IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER. YOU'RE NOW LORDS OF THE LAND AND YOUR CASTLE WILL SOON EMERGE. YOU DO KNOW THAT ALL GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT. Smile

Oh, congratulations! You have a beautiful piece of property! I imagine you will have a lot of fun finding your next home and deciding where to site it on your 14 acres. I look forward to seeing your updates.

Beautiful land, I hope your dream home will follow. I have always wanted to fix up an old house but probably never will. I will enjoy watching you do that. Enjoy your new "home"

I remember your thread and I enjoyed viewing the properties. Congratulations on finding the perfect homesite. I absolutely love the windmill. They are a rare find in our area and we have been searching for one for years to dismantle and bring home with us. No luck yet. I'll be looking forward to your updates. Happy house hunting.

ETA...and Thanksgiving

Thanks, everyone! I have my eye on an old house and have actually been in discussions with the owner and getting bids from house movers, but it's a big and expensive process so keep your fingers crossed! I appreciate all your well wishes!

Congratulations, Nita. Looking forward to seeing your progress. (Looks like the northwest side of I-35; Williamson County? Burnet? Gillespie?)

Wishing you all the best with this large project! Please keep us updated as it progresses. Very exciting time for you and your DH.

Is your access from the top of the hill or otherwise? Looks as if you have lots of raw material for rock walls, etc!

Achi - you are spot-on; it is in Burnet Co. Thanks, Lucky and sissy; there is SO much to be done that I hadn't even thought about building with the stones! Maybe someday! sjf - not my thing, but thanks for the input.

You cancelled out building? Renovating an old house is romantic, but new construction can be cost effective over the long run if you build to conserve energy and have clean air while living in it. Just thinking out loud sometimes older materials are not that safe for our indoor environment. Especially with all the stripping, refinishing and chemicals necessary to make new.

Mary Ruth - one thing I have found when I mention this dream of mine is there seem to be two distinct trains of thought, and while I hear what you and the others on your train are saying, it reminds me of the quote I have stenciled in my dining room - I have it stenciled in French, but the translation is roughly "The heart has its reasons, of which reason knows naught (or nothing)" - and my heart has to follow its dream.

CaraRose - thanks!!

Achi - You are so sweet; what a nice offer!

Nitalynn,
I am sorry if you thought I meant you shouldn't do your dream.

And one's dreams are not visible to others, just to the dreamer and others ALSO have experience that the dreamer might not have and so want to mention something they feel the dreamer did not think of or sees. So, in that respect, you were just hearing the few caution signs, as you would when entering an area with falling rocks, or slippery path, or perhaps a cliff (such as a money pit) but it is you who are going through the journey and it is your dream and you will follow your dream.

I will watch your journey and be HAPPY for you! Each of us find our OWN paths and follow our own dreams, and I will learn from watching your trail to your dream house!

It is wonderful of you to share, and I was not trying to rain on your parade. Smile

There used to be a lady on here when I first started that did just as you want to do. Don't remember her screen name and I think she did it in TN or mid south. I followed her efforts, struggles and hard work and what she had to make do with until next step, but like you Nitalynn, she was following her dream.

Sounds like Bella and Donny.

Thanks, Mary Ruth Smile

Bella and Donny come to mind as old house renovators, but they didn't move the house. I'm not sure any regulars on here have done that (if so, I'd like to know), although I remember someone posted some pics a year or so ago of an acquaintance (I believe) moving a house.

Nope- not Donny and Bella. In thinking it more this lady and DH moved to ancestors former homestead and rehabbed, remodeled the little place. Anyway it was a slow, tedious journey for them as well as a labor of love.
