Does anyone else have trouble deciding what they want to use to decorate a room when you have two different themes you really like? I have things to do it in a beachy or with more reds, floral pictures, palm tree picture etc. Dang I just can't decide and it frustrates me lol

I have an aversion to themes so I may not be the right person to answer your question. If you feel the two styles you like are incompatible, design your room in a neutral fashion so you can change your art and accessories periodically. There is really nothing wrong with themes in concept, but often they are overdone to the point of making a room look cartoonish.

One thing I have learned to do is to paint the room in a somewhat neutral color that will match either set of very different styled accessories. That way I can have the room itself finished, but change out the accessories whenever the mood strikes.

For example, I have 2 different collections for my kitche that a love. My outdated 90s watermelon collection that I can't bear to part with, and my vintage 40s fruit items.

Since both collections share some of the same colrs- red and green, I painted the kitchen a light yellow and the cabinets and beadboard white. Either collection will match the kitchen, all I have to do is swap them out.

Becky that's what I have been thinking, use one and when get tired of it, use the other. I really wish I could incorporate some of each thing in there and if there is a way and I can learn or figure it out, I will do it.

I agree that theme spaces tend to become overdone not to mention predictable. I prefer evoking a feel that reflects my passions, travels, and a unique eclectic approach that reflects my personality. If done in this manner you won't risk a one note space that you may tire of readily.

I think a small room done with your collection of something you LOVE no matter how tacky is a treasure to visit or spend time in! IF you work slowly in your choices, your mind will find a way to make things fit in your own unique way. I know you have a talent for putting things together in unique ways, so you can come up with your own style.

For example:
I would LOVE a room full of clocks! REAL clocks! But couldn't afford that so I bought inexpensive clocks and enjoyed seeing those!
The picture attached is of one narrow wall in my Florida home. It shows color on the walls (pale aqua) so I am not living with my all white walls anymore. I wanted color when I arrived here. My clocks are not expensive, but I treasure them, so I saved my favorite out of over 25 I owned. I had more wall space in the Virginia house than I do here, so I would not have attempted to have all of the clocks in one room. So, a collection in one area gives me the feeling of plenty without the number of items being more.
This also shows the color red with the aqua wall. I intend to slip cover or reupholster this settee because the intense sun has faded the red already!

I miss being able to meet in person at the pottery in Williamsburg like we used to! We had such good times! The top center clock is one I bought on one of those trips!

Sometimes a color can unify: A turquoise wall color would look great with blues and beachy feel and also looks great with red!

So, you could do pale turquoise wall help you to feel as though the room is 'full'. I like texture and detail on my walls in my home, so I understand your need to fill a room.

Filter your accessories for what you actually LOVE.

This is a huge problem for me. I like so many different things, and I can't commit. I know if you pick a picture, area rug, bedding, etc, you can pick colors out of them to paint the walls, then pick other items in to coordinate. I started off in the other direction, neutral, wall and floor, furniture and lamps that will go with everyhting then I start adding things in. I never over invest in trendy items(or clothing for that matter), but go with a cheaper or knock off version of it, or maybe just 1 or 2 things that once I tire of it or it goes "out" I won't feel bad selling at a yard sale or donating. I find if you like to change things out or mix things up it's easier. I think they call that transitional. Maybe dysfunctional in my case. This year I am finishing up this house...here 8 years already & buying things that I like whether they go or not. I like the other replies about avoiding being a "theme". Make it what you love and enjoy.

mmtsh I may be the one called disfunctional but with a whole lot of OCD because I fret about the look until I get it right lol

Can you do the beach colors for spring and summer and the reds for fall and winter?

That's a good idea sms! I am gonna figure out what furniture I am putting in the room and go from there. I have such fun decorating!
