On another thread of Family Treasurers, a couple of people wrote about family pictures. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US should make it a top priority to scan pictures into our computers with names and dates on them and make CD's to circulate to various people in their family. YOU might not be interested but I assure you, as a genealogist I can tell you that someone in your family now or in future generations will be so grateful. WHY distribute the CD's to various people? For safekeeping. It would be UNusual for several people to ALL lose, misplace or destroy them. Plus it means that everyone will have access to their family history. Of my GG Grandparents born 1802 to 1810, I have pictures of 4 of the 8. I think I am incredibly lucky!!!This message has been edited. Last edited by: Love, Lu,

Funny you should write this Lu as just yesterday I scanned in and then emailed to my entire family some old photos. I just learned that my niece is doing her family genealogy and of course half of it is also mine. So I also got started on ancestry.com. Have any hints about using it? I am on a trial membership, but will join. One thing is that my Dad's grandparents were born in Germany & Ireland so I guess I'll have to get an international membership?????? I know I have a pic of two of my gg grandmothers. Will have to search for others. Don't you have 16 greatgrandparents?

Yes. 16 Great Grandparents. I didn't count back far enough. As for Ancestry.com....I have subscribed for years but they have changed the format in the past year or so and I'm not too well acquainted with it. My membership does include the international aspect but except for 1 Great-Great Grandfather born in England and migrating to this country in 1838, all the rest have been here since at least the mid 1600 and early 1700's. so I haven't bothered too much with looking into overseas research. The 1940 census is out. I still haven't gotten a handle on it. As with all things involving the computer, one must stay on top of things constantly or fall behind. Unfortunately I'm always a day late and a dollar short. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Love, Lu,

Whenever I was given a family picture I always made copies and shared it with the cousins! For if something happened and my original was lost -- the picture would be gone forever! Of course, that was before one could scan and save -- but the idea is the same. I like ancestry.com -- I run hot and cold -- sometimes I'm on it every day and then I'll put it down for a while and then get back on. I've learned a lot about my family from it! Martha

I am a recent addict to this. What I love is the connections with contemporary people I did not know I was related to. In fact separate from my research DH came across a mention of himself that someone made and posted on Ancestry. It was a hoot even if it contained incorrect information!

One would be surprised by the freak accidents which destroys photographs. I have a closet where I store all my old pictures dating back to the 1800's. Believe it or not the ceiling collapsed on the pictures. Only a few were destroyed but it was such a freak thing. When the bathroom above the closet was redone in the late 1980's, apparently the workmen just pushed some of the old tile down the hole where the toilet had been taken out. That toilet leaked and the weight of the tile broke thru the ceiling of the closet below. I was here by myself and it happened late at night. Scared me half to death.
