Does anyone have the wall mounted cabinet type ironing board that folds out from the wall? What are the pros and cons? are they convenient to use? My ironing board stays set up in a very small narrow hall laundry room and takes up a lot of floor space.

Don't know about all mounted ones but I just bought one that will go over a door. Only problem is I didn't think about the fact that there are NO plugs close enough to doors to plug the iron into. Not the best idea to use an extension cord for an iron either so I will probably take it back.

My husband and I installed a recessed wall mounted ironing board that we purchased at Lowes about 1 year ago. It was actually easy to do. It fit right between the studs and the only tool we needed to purchase was a dry wall saw. The board is smaller but I don't even notice that anymore. I really like it. Trust me when I say it was easy. We are not do it yourself kind of people. Yesterday it took us 2 hours to change an overhead light fixture. LOL

I've had one for 15 years and love the convenience of it. Mine is in an offset nook of the family room so I can watch TV or talk with my DH while I iron but no one notices it is there when it's closed. The door is painted same as the wall. The only con I can think of is you have to order the cover from the company when you need a new one since it's a bit smaller than standard. I wouldn't want to do without mine. There's an outlet inside the unit for the iron and a shelf to store the iron.

This is the one that we installed. I forgot to mention that the board swivels making it very convenient.

We had one once in a rented apt. I dearly loved it. Your cover stays so clean & its so convenient.

Mine looks like Colorphobic's. Had it installed while doing a remodel job in my laundry, so my handy-man ran the electricity to it at that time. Love the convenience, out-of-sight, everything in one place at all times.

Board is slightly smaller than standard, but it works for me...don't iron that much anymore! It is a bit awkward for larger items such as curtains, but sometimes you gotta give up something for "pretty" and "convenience".

I'm like Debi, and I have the over the door one, I do have it in my hall closet, between the dr and the lr. Because no one wanted it in their bedroom. I used to have it in mine, til the older ones grew up and started sewing, and that would go on all night in my house.

I did get a new iron recently with a long cord, a shark, and the plug is right around the corner.

I didn't even think of building one in our new camp, because, I have no intention of ironing once I live there!

For anyone who irons (that would NOT be me!) the built-in ironing boards are great. My DM had them in two houses and loved them. I didn't even mind ironing once in awhile cause it's so easy to drop down and put away again. Definitely better to have the electrical outlet right on the wall in the cabinet. I don't think my DM's was a smaller board but then that was "back when" and probably custom.

I've got one installed in my laundry room & it's wonderful; folds away easily, hides behind a garage-like door, saving a lot of space. If you're not a serious ironer meaning need to press down extremely hard & need the full length of an ironing board for curtains and other large items, then this will work for you.

I had one for about 12 years before I found out that the board could "swivel" - wow that would have helped knowing that all those years! LOL! It's down now as we had to replace our washer/dryer and it got in the way. I hate to iron so now I just have a table top one I pull out once in a blue moon.

We have a recessed one and I love it. Can't think of a single negative about it, except it's hard to find covers for it. I've only changed it once, and I think I had to special order it.

Just got one to put in laundry room in our new house. I got the one like colorphobic, but I got the unfinished one with the sleeve board and the outlet/light kit so DH can wire it in for me. I have a full size board set up in my sewing room so I only needed a handy board in the laundry room for the small amount of touching up that I do . It will install right next to the door of my laundry chute.

When looking for a board, there is the Hideaway (reasonably priced and available at Lowes) and there is also the IronAway (the Cadillac of built in ironing boards). Both come with and without options, built in and surface mount, etc. The Hideaway is all wood the IronAway is metal with wood door. Both have the swivel option. The IronAway also comes in a longer (maybe full size) board. The IronAway also comes with a major pricetag.

Oh, covers for both brands can be ordered online.

The swivel feature has been a plus on mine too. I mounted it right next to a row of built in counter/cabinets (basement family room), and the board may sometimes be too close if not for the swivel.
