The new front door (when I finally get it) will be painted off white. We are in northern CA -should I get wood or fiberglass? Do you all know advantages/disadvanges to each?
I am off to Home Depot tomorrow to see if they have anything decent to purchase ! |

WOOD....................
Or an insulated steel door & door frame. For security. ![]() |

I'm curious to see the replies here myself. We have had wood in the past, changed it out with a remodel to steel and liked it then did another remodel later and changed to fiberglass, that has been 3 years now. Curious to hear any pros/cons to each type. We wanted low maintanence so we went with steel, then went with fiberglass as the steel got dented with hail and also we should have used a lighter color paint than the dark we had chose.

Fiberglass doors are pretty good. Insulating and can come with a wood look to them that is pretty good. Steel is alright, dents some and strong. Wood is always beautiful but if not protected by a porch or something, they will be a maintenance issue. They also can absorb moisture and swell or shrink causing them to not seal well. It also matters what kind of house you have. An old house should have a wooden door - to stay in keeping with the architectural integrity of the house - tho on my OH I have 3 steel doors, and 2 vintage wooden doors - some things are just more sensible than others - and if they're all painted - it doesn't make that big of a difference.

Textured fiberglass. I have had both..wood doors can warp.

When choosing exterior doors for our new home, we went through the same problem of choosing the right material.
We live in VA where heat and moisture are abundant. If you are northern enough to be close to Oregon, you may have a similar climate. Wood doors, while absolutely beautiful, do have limitations. They do not like exposure to the elements. And a beautiful wood door can be very ugly if over exposed to the weather and not cared for properly. We ended up choosing Therma Tru fiberglass doors. Although I am planning to paint our front door we opted for the fiberglass that is textured to look like wood (even when stained). If budget is a consideration, they also have a smooth fiberglass that looks very nice when pained. Our doors are protected by porches, but we do occasionally get lots of wind with our rain. Did not want the metal doors as they do dent and to me they seem heavier (as in if you slam it on your fingers, it hurts more). And we have lots of kids around. |

thanks you all. Now where do you think is the best place to shop for a new door? I am looking for something simple. We have a 1956 rancher and I'd love a white painted door with 4 or 6 windows at the top. I don't feel like I should have to spend $1000 on a new door but I don't to go to cheap either. Should I look at Home Depot and Lowes???
