One way to create that kind of image is to do the 3D layout in Sketch Up and then render it in Photo Shop. As far as three dimensional renderings go this method is considered faster than a hand produced drawing, but let me tell you, it is not for beginners! Someone is putting many many hours into those computer pictures that look so quick and easy. For example, the last room I rendered by computer was a reception room for an office, and it took me about 15 hours.

Here's the text of a post from 2007 by the show producer on the favorite shows board:
I am the Series Producer for Hidden Potential and would like to clarify this issue of the computer program used on the show.
Our design team mainly uses 3-D Studio Max to model the designs that our on-camera designers come up with. Various lighting programs are also used in conjunction with 3-D Studio Max to make them look more realistic.
Please note that this software is designed for design and architecture professionals, not for the novice designer.
There are other software options on the market that might be more user friendly but I personally have never tinkered with these products.
Thanks for the inquiries and keep watching!!
Hope that info helps!
