So now that the remodel is "over" it is time to put some things back together. I really need suggestions for the kitchen window. The big issues are color and privacy.

Walls are white, with white backsplash and white cabs, so would love some orange or red. Do not want to block light, but also this looks out directly to the front door (so when salesmen come a knockin' there just ain't no hidin'!), so a little privacy would be good.

What do you think? White wood blinds with a valance for color? Curtains?

Personally, I really do not care for the tiered style cafe curtains - just not my style - so would prefer to stay away from those. Also, can't sew a button, let alone a curtain

direct view - just like standing at the sink (and now I can enjoy the mountain view out there though I know you can't see it in the photo!). Kitchen is now both VERY vintage and yet VERY modern in style, so anything from uber-retro to modern could work.

JC, I haven't been following your re-do, but I LOVE what I'm seeing here! I can see wood blinds or wood shutters, maybe with a valance for color, but I'm really a fabric person so I would probably go whole hog with a fabric shade of some kind.

Very nice redo. I hope someone can give you some good advise. If I needed privacy though I would probably go with a wood blind so you can open an close as needed. I'm sure someone else can give better ideas and advise though.

It looks great! But definitely a touch of color would be welcome. I think a lot of that will be brought in through accessories on the counters and shelves, but a print fabric on the window combining all your colors could bring it together.

Gorgeous. How bout some white wood blinds and a black and white buffalo checked straight valance over top to add some softness?

lolol - I looked and looked before I made that comment, and I just wasn't sure, but it sure looks like one! I thought it was hilarious if it was, since that's what cats like to do!

We have a very cat-like pom, but if he made it up there it would be quite the accomplishment!

We did have our wine posters dry mounted and framed. Just wonderful for the kitchen, and I have a gorgeous colorful platter to display. We tried over a dozen paint colors and couldn't make up our minds, so this is how we'll be bringing in the color. Personally, I would love a granny smith green in the room - just a hint with the blue - or an orange/red. The foyer has the same new tile floor and the old faded orange rug I've had for years looks so homey there. The contrast of orange/blue is great.

I like the white blinds. You can adjust slats to be open but, starting at bottom take your fingers and slide several rows of slats closed. Open and closed at same time- no one sees in at bottom.

I'm with mamaspoon. I too like the blinds. You can pick up color with bowls and such if you want.
Your kitchen re-do is a winner. I simply love it! Good job.

Have you thought of white plantation shutters?

No added advice on a window treatment. I like the idea of a shutter or blind. Just want to say I love your kitchen makeover.

I need to get up on the step stool and vacuum the crevices of the window today - really yucky from the construction - and then I'll measure. My sis gave me a HD gift card, so I can likely get a set of blinds without going out of pocket on the project.

Wow: what a transformation. That's was helpful seeing the before and afters.

I love the idea of shutters and blinds. A fun treatment for wood or faux wood blinds is wide cloth tapes: a vintage vibe that I think would work well in your new kitchen.

I like the blinds with the wide tapes that aychi posted.

We have a bald kitchen window over our sink too. It has a great view to the pond and most of the yard. It faces west so in summer, it lets in a lot of heat and UVs so it needs to be covered with something. Because its over the sink, I've pretty much decided that a wide faux wood blind is going to be the best option since the window sometimes gets splashed (at our place it could be anything from spaghetti sauce to latex paints and primers). The faux will handle exposure to water, steam, and scrubbing better than wood and is less likely to be permanently stained than fabric. For me, it's the most practical option.

If you go with a blind those wide tapes would be fab at your place!

Bella's right; go with the faux wood look for blinds or shutters in the kitchen for all the good reasons she cited.

I have a very large picture window in my living room and had the same problem with privacy, but I didn't want to completely cover because we have a great view. I hung a sheer curtain that allows me to see out but give a little buffer. I have an accordion type shade that I pull down when we want complete privacy.

I also like the idea of shutters as others suggested.

I like the picture that was posted with the white blind. Think you should keep it simple. I would go with that. : )

I have a window over my sink that looks out into my utility room. Originally, it looked out onto the carport. I have had many tiers over the years as well as white blinds, but I finally decided I wanted something beautiful to look at when I wash dishes, so I had a stained glass window made and installed. It was expensive, but I had fun choosing the pattern, the glass, and I love the result. The colors aren't showing true in this pic, but you may be able to get the idea.

I have the faux wooden blinds and I'm pleased with them, they are functional but then I added a valance for some color. I like the idea of going with the colored tapes... I chickened out of doing that because I was too afraid to commit to a color....story of my life.

My girlfriend did a "valance" over the top portion of her window with stained glass design she created, its beautiful, the picture sms posted reminded me of that.

I love fabrics and colors, so thanks for letting me weigh in. Blinds are probably not necessary for privacy since you have the courtyard, so I vote for the softness of the roman shade hung in line with the tops of your new cabinets that you can drop at night or when you are having a pajama day. Calico will make you one just for you since you are sewing challenged like me, or follow internet directions for no-sew roman blinds - with iron on fabric tape (and a willingness to hand sew some rings on) you can do these yourself.

The "privacy" issue is less neighbors looking in than it is "strangers" who come through the gate. Both the kitchen and office flank the door and you can't pretend that you aren't home.

I too would say the plantation shutters or a nice colorful Roman shade.
