Design Trends of 2011
Article on Centsational Girl blog... comments about upcoming trends. Were they right in their predictions?

What would you say is going to still be with us in 2013?
Anything NEW you see in the horizon that will come to the forefront for the near future?
some ideas to think about:
Color
DIY project (is Annie Sloan chalk paint going to fade?, I think competitors will give us no VOC paints and finishes to play with)
fabric style
decor pieces

I also think people who decorate their homes will copy less and look for their own signature pieces.

Here's what I say about decorating trends: BTDT.

Really, if you look back far enough, you will see there are no new ideas under the sun, just a recycling of fashions and trends. Usually, every 20 years or so, a new trend emerges to appeal to the newer generation. If you have been around long enough, you will recognize this new trend as something from way back when and either boo it or cheer it on.

As long as we recognize what drives trends --- the endless pursuit to sell newer and shinier stuff -- then we are OK. But, to think that there is something that has never, ever been seen or done before: balderdash.

So, that's my story, and I am sticking to it. :>)

I personally loathe trends of any kind. That being said, some things are classic and were never out of style. Brass hardware comes to mind as one of those things the masses turned up their noses at, and yet in high end homes it continued to be used. Now suddenly it's a trend (again!) Decorating insecurity breeds trends, period. The need to fit in and please your social group often supercedes common sense. It also keeps the my industry going so who am I to complain?

I look at trends to know what NOT to follow! LOL
Sometimes a finish, or a method of refinishing or updating can be found in the 'flood of information' out there.

I know it keeps the industry going... that is life, and the young people (new to decorating) coming in want their own look even if it means they change it in a couple of years.

Design trends are part of the consumerist machine. Design magazines and television like HGTV are in the business of making people unsure or unhappy with their environments so they'll go out and spend money.

I have a big sign hanging in my office "Black is the new Black".
I have been liberally using black and leopard print since about 1977. Every few years a fashion designer or and color specialist will tout in the latest mag that brown, navy, eggplant, whatever is the new black. Bullsh*t. Nothing is as sexy, as moody, as decadent as the color black. For me it is never "out".

The only trend I was happy to see finished, was faux Victoriana with feathers and tassels poking out of every surface. But truth be told in the right environment, done with a judicious hand any trend, now matter how timely can work, when applied correctly.

I see that, unfortunately, Reclaimed Wood designed as *Reclaimed Wood* was and still is a trend. Unfortunately.
Rustic, white washed, antiqued. And yellow with gray, my other un-favorite.


My favorite style is a mix of comfy cozy english and french traditional, global bazaar accents and mid-century & modern architecture. Bergerre chairs in a concrete & glass house, with a moroccan lamps.

Well, I don't see how your decor could be seen as trendy because you obviously decorate with what you love, which in my opinion NEVER goes out of style!

I love what I love just because... that is my view of my home furnishings for my retirement house on a strict budget. I am looking to feel a certain way in my home, of course a million dollars would help greatly to bring the views I want outside my large windows! LOL
But... Over 'themed' rooms gets old fast...

I see lots of Before & After photos that are lateral, meaning there was no change on the quality of the look of the room, but to the DIY'er it is something new to look at, oh how expensive that is!

I don't know nothin' bout trends or style changes etc. Just get annoyed when things like comforters not longer come in colorways I like!

Spend sometime an hour or so ago looking at DD's pics from her July Paris trip. Was blown away by the pics of art and esp those of Versailles! Now I am trying to think of how I can work those plume adorned beds into my decorating schemes!

(talk about delusions of grandeur! LOL)

I thought of another trend that I suspect will go away soon...the drum shade chandelier...how long to sell off the inventory...two years...three?

I agree, the redo's on TV are not always that great, but anything's better than what was before, especially getting rid of all the apcray and clutter that collects in those spaces.

I do like the drum shades, I wonder how long they've been around or come and gone and come back again. They seem familiar like the 60's or something.

I also wonder about chandeliers in every room. they sure are so pretty to look at but too much sugar can make a person sick.

About drum shades. Yes they have been used before in the 60's. But not as chandeliers. They were used on straight floor lamps. Actually I wish floor lamps (other than pharmacy type) would come back. They are darned useful!

I agree, Lady of Shallot. I've been looking for the kind of floor lamp that you would use over a bridge table and there's not much to choose from, plus none of them seem to get very good reviews.

Drum shades go back at least to the early 20th century and then fell out of favor in the 80s. They really hit their stride mid-century, late 40's to 60s. And,now of course, they are back in vogue. And their shapes have changed.

Generally, vintage drum shades were very large relative to the size of the lamp base, and were also very elongated. Everyone I knew growing up in the 50s had them.

I see your point about purchasing items. I find it hard to find certain colors too when searching for linens etc. It is almost as if when our style (favorite colors and patterns and a 'look') becomes popular we rush out and get more items to support our style.
The floor style lamps are always available, just not featured on decorating sites. If you go to Lowe's for example, they have a book of lighting that can be ordered. Any lamp place can provide you with choices of whatever line they sell.

Not on here because of trends? I think this board has unique threads that are not all about trends but design questions and suggestions. Love the inspirational photos and links posted here, help everyone to visualize different decorating dilemas.

I happen to like the drum shade, and am glad I have seen it in 'every' situation! That means IF I want to use that style shade I could pick 'one' place to use it. I think it works well with a low-hung light that might show lightbulb glare with any other shade. And the small shades over each of the candlelight bulbs seem to always get out of allignment!

YES, the BEST 'redo's are NO CLUTTER! lol
And photos staged for photographs always look better! (no flash and diffused lighting).

And I was thinking also of color schemes (someone mentioned yellow and gray) have always been around (favored English combination) just someone re-interprets them for their 'fresh' look at the color schemes.

Things cannot STAY the same! There will always be someone new coming into the craft with their won interpretation, some other 'look' coming in from another country, and seasonal changes, whether you are in a desert, mountain range, or ocean front, no place is the same as any other, no cookie cutter look for all.
McDonald's may have done it with hamburger... but there is no decorating 'drive-through'! lol

I guess I'm the odd woman out... I like seeing different trends in design. I don't look to them to know what I should buy so my friends will like me, I don't know of anyone that insecure. I do enjoy seeing knew looks appear in showrooms and mags. I don't like them all, I enjoy seeing the return of a past look with a fresh updated twist. After seeing familiar colors and styles it is fun to see something different, thinking I'd like to add a touch of this to my home. Sometimes I add a look, sometimes I pass.
Funny about the mention of black, I used to love black fixtures in the bathroom, never got it, and now can't imagine having black fixtures, but still remember the big black hutch I saw in a shop in Tlaquepaque, I wish I'd bought but didn't, that one would still work for me.
I dislike some looks I might call a fad, something I couldn't live with and most people can't either, thus a fad.

I've never been one for trends. I just do what makes me happy.

I don't know if the design trends of 2011 were right, or what we will be seeing in 2013. I always enjoy seeing inspiration photos and other people's design and decor decisions. Much like fashion, I could browse and window shop for quite a while. That said, I may have some things that have been considered trendy at one time, but our decisions have never been based upon trend. In earlier years, our budget was the deciding factor for almost everything. When we built this home (2006) we had dreamed and planned long enough to know exactly what we wanted for our home. We chose what we loved. We created a home and a FEEL that suits us. Our home is different and hard to put into a singular category. Eclectic? Rustic (but by no means shabby, rusty, peeling or dull)? Lodge? Luxurious? Transitional? Contemporary? Darned if I know what others call it (although a realtor friend terms is a Retreat). We call it home.

I always remember my designer saying she wanted my house to look as I've collected my things over the years. Mixing styles helps a house look real and not decorated.
I've seen some homes so one style, making additions of another style look out of place.

I have no idea if the design trends were correct or not altho I'm sure some designers and trend gurus would say they were. I doubt there is any reliable way of knowing the real popularity of trends altho if there are a lot of trendy things marked down in the stores then perhaps those things were not as popular as the manufacturers would have liked.

I expect that the Restoration Hardware industrial look may have seen it's day as it's been popular with that retailer for quite a long time and IMO they need to find something new.

I enjoy reading about the predicted trends altho have found since doing so for a number of years that many things seem to be included time and again with a few "new" but recycled ideas added every year. It's all just a game anyhow to promote sales. Anyone who falls for trends has more money to burn than I want to! LOL ;D My style is definitely collected over time and I like the rustic and refined look with genuine rustic items, not faux rustic. I have nothing in my house I don't like but have reduced the number of home decor accessories greatly in recent years. Still have enough that my kids (who prefer a much more edited and modern style) think I have too many!

For the coming year handmade, eclectic, texture, rustic, and Bohemian are still in style depending who you read so it's possible my decor style could still be trendy! LOL However I doubt it because it so depends on how one puts things together and I'm always going to do it "my way" which may not have much hope of being how a designer would. OK with me. The only thing I'm buying new right now is original art which for me is very personal and beyond trends. Maybe change some WT in the near future.

What I wish I had the budget for:

An Airstream camper in my back yard done up like a Gypsy wagon for my GD's to enjoy when they come up to visit... and I could lounge and read in! This 'guest' space would be done in Bohemian fabrics and very relaxed, comfy and cozy.

A real Gypsy wagon would not hold up to the Florida weather and downpours. So, the Airstream could be water tight and a small A/C unit run in the heat of the summer months.

A girl can dream can't she?

Design trends change so often that people who try to keep up with them waste waaaay too much money IMO.

It has taken me years to get my decor the way I want it and now we are doing some renovation. By the time I'm satisfied, the "trends" would have changed 3 times.

OH YES, us DIY'ers find that by the time we 'emerge' from our projects, TIME has actually moved on and people's minds are on something else! LOL
Not talking about upgrading, or replacing things in our homes. But, more about following trends.

The world is acting like they are in a drive-through (like fast food) and things just come in front of them and they grab (from a menu) what they want and then pay, and drive away to something else.

Hard to keep up with that! You are so right, wears out credit cards! (worn from use...and adds onto the monthly amount paid on balance)

Meisha, I have always gotten a laugh out of this statement. They want it to LOOK that way but do not want the client or the HO to actually accumulate things that way.
However I have done this (been married 50 years)
I even still have a bunch of straw flowers I bought the first year of my marriage.

Here is a tiny corner of my d.r. with five items accumulated probably anywhere from 20 to 40 years.

I actually have to amend what I say above. Looking at this photo I realize that four of the elements were very old when I was given or bought them. Only the painting is new and that is a copy of a mid 19th C. painting. So who would know if these were bought in one fell swoop or over time? So Meisha I guess it would depend if one bought newly popular items over time or timeless items all at once!

Me too, Mary Ruth. Except I would like both an airstream camper and a gypsy wagon.

Have an ad for a gypsy wagon knocking around my bdrm for years. I remember seeing at least one real one on a road in England, once.
