What can you not resist adding to your home furnishings? I seem to have a thing for wooden chairs.

Decided to count the ones around the house and got up to 40. Most of these are free or very little cost. Some we use outdoors but most indoors. The outdoor ones are awaiting a paint job. The Bertoia chairs are not wood but wrapped metal.

The four oak chairs we recently found at the town swap shop are the latest additions and we will give away four other chairs to accommodate the new ones.

What about you? What is your weakness? Lamps, tables, boxes, etc etc?

This one on the left is a chair I actually bought for $7. Think I'll paint it that green I love.

My DR chairs cost $24 over 40 years ago. The legs don't really go with the table but I guess that is o.k.

The blue chair is what we use for our computer chair. This one has the best story which I just found out. I had forgotten where we got it but DH said it was from the newspaper where he had been employed for 33 years. It was one of the original furnishings (c. 1900) and would have belonged to a predecessor of the current paper)

It was free.

Funny you should ask, but I was reminded today by a close friend that I have a large amount of kitchen gadgets collected over the years. Smile

I say there's nothing wrong w/ collecting as long as it doesn't break your wallet, become a health risk or clutter your house.

I have a thing for clocks and I have passed it down to one of my daughters. I have a mantle clock over the entertainment center, a grandfather's clock in my dining room,a wall chiming clock on the wall in the kitchen,a wall clock in the laundry room,an antique alarm clock on my bedroom nightstand,a clock radio in the guest room, and a wall clock on my screened in room! I forgot a wall clock in my garage. I retired from nursing when I always wore a watch..funny but since retirement I have never worn a watch again!!!

Crocks, crocks, and more crocks!

I think that these must be going "out" of fashion, because the prices in the FM that I frequent are low and more and more are cropping up. I've passed up several, but that has more to do with condition than anything else, but when I find one without any major damage, it is really hard to pass up! I just love the look and feel of the stoneware, and really do find good uses for large and small crocks.

MaryRuth I can't, as I had to pack them all up and store them. We rented out our house and are living in the condo full time now. But my addiction runs deep, I have probably 5 or 6 BOLTS of fabric, one print has 25 yards on the bolt.

I am doing much better now that space is a real issue. But I can't help but to look anyway and drool....LOL

Obsessions have nothing to do with *need* or *want*.

Anyone with 40 chairs has a serious obsession!

Mary Ruth, I've always liked your clock collection.

I've had many obsessions with home decor accessories and furniture over the years but realized it would be onerous to move with the amount of things I had so have seriously downsized. Just planning ahead altho have no intention of moving very soon. I recently sold 6 chairs and gave away 4 others. I gave away/sold about 10 lamps. Have sold several urns but still have a few. I still have most of my silver holloware collection. I just love silver and do use it. Have sold dozens of odd plates, 3 sets of dishes, a dozen of my least fav bone china cups and saucers, and am gradually giving away/selling extra furniture. I still have a lot of fabric, craft supplies, table linens, art glass, a collection of small boxes, and vintage/antique cast iron. Will eventually edit those collections as well.

I'm using a lot of self-control in not acquiring anything new for my home! Too much can be a burden.

Not really Joy Luck. they all fall into my lap so to speak and all except for the current four we recently obtained are in use. We will dispossess ourselves of four chairs but have to wait for visit from DD before we decide which four.

Of course the wooden chairs I speak of are not the only chairs we have. I did not count any with upholstering.

It seems to me each bedroom needs a chair (or two) to sit on or place clothes on or pillows while making up a bed. You need chairs to sit on at tables (didn't count those in the yard that are not wooden)

I bet if you counted up all the side chairs in every area of your house (including storage) you might find that you too have a serious obsession!

Nope, no chair obsession here altho I honestly admit to that silver obsession! I have a set of 4 side and 2 armchairs for my DR table. Also have a bench that 2 of the Grands sit on if we need more DR seating. That's all the wooden chairs I own since editing my furniture. I have 2 upholstered chairs in my bedroom, a sofa in one guest bedroom (that will go soon), and a bench in the second guest room. Guests in the 3rd guest room have to sit on the beds if they need to. Besides that I only have an office chair which I'm thinking of getting rid of as I use my laptop elsewhere most of the time. I'm not counting outdoor furniture as have 2 decks and a large patio so have a total of 11 chairs which isn't even enough so we sometimes move them around.

My comment wasn't meant to be critical, it just seems that 40 chairs in a medium size house is a lot! I know you have a great place to obtain free treasures and it must be very tempting. I no longer go to yard sales and am developing great resistance to buying unnecessary *stuff* which is my personal choice at this time of my life which I don't expect anyone else to share.

I guess though if I had to pinpoint one thing it would be pictures. I have lots and lots of pictures and it is hard to pass them up if they are low priced and I like them. Luckily this house has a lot of wall space. I tend to lean toward pictures with houses/barns/sheds/grist mills/mountain scenery pictures and in the kitchen rooster/sunflowers/strawberries/apples and old timey kitchen type stuff.

Lately I've also been looking for shelves/cabinets for my walls too. Dh hang 2 for me this afternoon. I still need to accessorize them. I hang one small cabinet yesterday myself.

I have a hard time passing up baskets at a decent price too. I use them all over the house.

Here's my seating count, in a 1,933 SF 3 B/2 B home:

Indoors: 6 dining chairs; 1 vintage Indonesian carved teak bench that sits 2; 6 upholstered arm chairs; 1 sofa; 2 desk chairs; 2 ottomans.

Outdoors: 4 wicker chairs; 4 wrought iron dining chairs

Garage: 1 chair for DH

Attic Storage: 0

It's just the two of us. When we entertain, we can seat plenty of folks.

What do I need with more stuff? The only obsession I have, if it can be called that, is that I want my home comfortable and clutter-free. So far, it's working.

We do have a medium sized house but have four floors (I think I forgot to count basement and I know there is one chair at least there) but we have four porches (counting up and down) and a yard.

Sunny Daze reminded me that I also have a lot of pillows (just started counting them and am up to 36)

And Mary Ruth's clocks are the first thing I remember about her. I also could get into that!

Of course then there are linens and silver and china and like Mountain Beach I like enamelware.

Like Cavin I also like pretty glasses but they don't have to be crystal. I do esp like etched glasses, makes even water taste better.

Yesterday at our swap shop I found a huge cache of baby clothes which I took for sis's new grand baby twins. These are really vintage. . . many hand knit or crocheted hat and "sacque" sets, but also some aprons and other lace things. Darling booties and sox which sadly are only singletons.

I would scare myself about "hoarding" except that I have no problem disposing of things and of course our swap shop takes donations as well as dispenses them!

Ok I can't resist items with Fleur de Lis' on them. Could be anything, bookends, mirrors, frames, T-shirts, jewelry, plates etc. Also we collect crosses too.

BTW I just did a quick count of indoor/outdoor seating in my head and I stopped counting at 78, not counting the metal folding chairs in boxes in the garage.

Don't think I have enough time to name them all Wink

What can't I resist. Well, I do resist them for the most part but it is hard.

Pretty Lamps
Pictures and picture frames
Chairs
Dishes (especially sets of plates)
Pretty napkin rings
Linens
Nice Christmas ornaments (so hard to walk by)

I have to say though, I have really cut back on buying. I'm just so tired of clutter and have so much to get rid of. I have lots of pretty dishes in my yard sale but nobody is buying dishes around here anymore. They will probably be going to charity. Now, something has to be really special for me to buy it. I still have a hard time with lamps and art though. I'd love to change them out once a month but I can't.

I like chairs too. Seems every place in and out of the house has places to sit! Maybe I just like to sit?? LOL

Anyway, I've counted ALL of them including eating and sitting chairs, a bench and a swing and I've got 42. If you count how many places there are to actually sit (sofas and loveseats) then I could sit 54 people!!!

I counted all seats up down, in out and I could seat 68 people at the same time, although some would be in attic and outside.

Like Mary Ruth I dearly love fabric. However this is a little easier to resist acquiring. My old decorator friend gave me many fabric samples which I often used to make pillows. Sometimes though I take the rest and just look at them for a while in admiration!

Depending on my passion of the moment I go a little overboard on buying things. Some times it's as if I'm Oprah and buy one in every color.

I've taken a break on buying tchotchkes for the house and have been slowly collecting duvets and bedding. Pottery Barn has been my favorite affordable store for them lately. Plus it doesn't help that they spam me emails everyday! And dishes & bowls and I'm on the hunt for extra large serving spoons.

Then there's the purses and art for the walls. Those are the things I have a weakness for. Smile
I'll just admit it, I'm a shopper.

And, they look AWESOME in our garage. We bought two white lockers and the red console. Took my 69 yr old hubby no time to put them all together. Easy-peasy; also very well made and designed.

I wish I had a bigger laundry room so I could install a whole wall of them.

Snowmen! Love em, whether framed, carved, ceramic, tin, whatever. Really have to restrain myself at times. I like them because I can put them out in late November and keep them up til late February, if I want.

I recently painted a frame then went looking for something to put in it and found a Christmas gift bag in my stash with a snowman on it -- fits perfectly and I can hardly wait to bring it out and hang it. The other wall hanging is a silly painting I did years ago, including the lights. Amateurish, but its mine and I like it.

Hi... I hang them in the closet but for vintage purses those might be fun to hang on the wall with a few other vintage items, I wonder?

do you use the purses? i have an old beaded one from my grandmother but haven't taken it out of the box lately.

Ohhh, they spam me daily and i have to delete most of the emails or my closet would be a Pottery Barn warehouse! Come over and we can make beds. Big Grin I love my soft yellow quilt i bought a while back, perfect for summer and it's so long, the dog plays 'cave dog' under my bed.
I just added a couple of velvet shams but the praline color doesn't go so well with the quilt so you know what that means... shopping!
