My Son, Wonderful Lady, and I are almost home owners of our first house. I am excited I can finally decorate a house to our liking with out a landlord breathing down our neck. We practically have a amazing kitchen that is so bland and is in dire need for a renovation. I Would love to dedicate a wall to magnetic chalk paint. Please help us!!

Welcome and congrats on your new, lovely home.

Viewed the pics and like the open concept of your kitchen. There's not much blank wall space however for your magnetic chalk paint. The one wall that you face when entering via the fm. rm. into the kitchen might be a candidate however. I have also seen kitchen cabinets (the uppers) painted w/ that type of paint too. If the cabinetry isn't new or is not high end (it's difficult to say from the pics), you might paint black inside the upper cabinetry's molding. Yet another option might be to replace a paneled door w/ a solid door, perhaps one that leads to a pantry (?) or closet inside the kitchen and then apply the paint to it's face. Hope one of these ideas inspires you. BTW, what's the purpose of using this paint...a menu, a grocery list, messages ???

Blessings in your new home.

You hit it dead on!.... lol I would love to have something interactive for the family to do. Set up shopping lists, have my 1 year old just scribble on it lol, and to put up messages for everyone. I am so excited to get in this puppy! how about colors?? do you have any ideals for colors with an open concept like that.

Congratulations on your new home!

Here's an idea for a DIY magnetic chalkboard you can hang directly on the doors, without having to replace them.

You'll enjoy reading how this thrifty and resourceful gal did it: http://7thhouseontheleft.com/2012/05/chalkboard/

To establish a public space scheme, take cues from new or existing fabrics. It's important to maintain a flow of scheme to a degree especially in an open concept space. The inspirational print can come from things like art, upholstered furniture, an area rug, window treatment, pillows. Throw in some accents if you like, but be sure to scatter them around the room to draw the eye. Neutrals like creams, tans, golds, grays, browns, taupes, black/white can be incorporated throughout your public spaces if you wish. Mixing prints and adding lots of textural interest will also keep things interesting. Feel free to vary hue values and color predominances room to room also. Keep in mind that not every color in your scheme need be present room to room and each can have a different feel. One common thread is fine when it comes to carry a scheme even if you desire a monochromatic space for a change of pace.

The option re. the chalkboard paint applied via a large framed piece of art or lightweight board is a practical one to consider vs. changing the style of door. BTW, if your refrigerator isn't new or the wrong color, that's another surface that can be treated w/ the chalkboard magnetic paint as illustrated here...
