Hi All, new here today. We recently moved into a 40 yr old home after leaving our new construction home behind. We grew with that home for 16 yrs, and now I am faced with massive "Blank Canvas Overload"! I have a million questions, but I am going to start with this one, b/c since I work from home, I really want a nice environment in my office. So here goes... I am one of those people who like several different styles. Does your home *HAVE* to relay one and only one theme throughout? I am not talking going from French Country to Asian on the same floor, but my DH and I have very different tastes, so to appease both of us, I fear we are going to look "broken" and chaotic. I really like a cottage, breezey feel and would love to have a white painted wood ceiling in my office and continue the entire room in that theme. Problem - as you walk in the door, my office is immediately to one side and the rustically furnished dining room (barn wood farm table w/benches, old mustard cabinets, hutches, etc) is on the other side. So you look side to side and see farm house/ beach cottage, also if I do that ceiling in one room, do I have to do the entire 1st floor that way? Do I need to find a happy medium and move down that path, or can I bounce from style to style and try to tie in where I can to make it work? Sorry for the long 1st post, am hoping to gain a lot knowledge from this forum. Thanks!

WELCOME! The first option that came to mind in light of the differences in style in your public spaces esp. via the foyer, is to add french doors w/ sheers to your office space to conceal it from public view and the rustically furnished dining room. The unifying factor can come via a flow of scheme to some degree. NO....all ceilings need not be the same throughout. Private spaces, btw, need not follow the flow of scheme or feel so those spaces should not be an issue. Happiness in your new home and I/we look forward to being of assistance as you progress feathering your new nest.

Mimster, welcome to the HGTV boards. Hopefully our talented people here can help you out and give you some good advice. When you get a chance, please post pictures of the space you need help with. Interested to see your rooms unfold, sounds like you like a mix of styles as I do too.

Thanks for the replies, Froo Froo and Always! FF - I too thought of french doors so at least I know I am headed some where in the right direction. Also happy to hear that not all ceilings must comply with beach cottage style - hubs may leave if that is the case . I will certainly post before and after pics as I start...we are still in boxes in many rooms - ashamed to say! Our old home was smaller so I feel that overwhelmed, yet giddy feeling you get when there are sooo many ideas. I have to remember it is a work in progress and does not all have to be done at once and to enjoy the journey, but by nature I am impatient! LOL Thanks again for the replies, I look fwd to perusing the boards for info and ideas.
