Thanks for posting this. I saw the previews when I saw "Lincoln" and I thought it looked wonderful. I may have to wait until it comes out of dvd as my friends aren't as eager to sit throught it. Frown

I saw the play in London when it opened! We all knew it would be a smash hit! Everyone there loved it!

thanks for the link to the article! I will go check it out now!
Just viewed the site. WOW what GREAT sets! I have to see this film! The brick and reproduction of old medieval set is amazing!

That was fun to read!

My husband and I and our children are going to see the movie tonight. We are all excited. We took the children to see the stage production a few years ago and they absolutely loved that.

And annie17, I wish you could come along with us.

If your friends don't want to go, why not go ahead and go by yourself? I go to movies by myself sometimes. When I do that I go to the early afternoon show, and eat popcorn for my lunch. I would never miss something I wanted to see just because my husband or kids don't want to see it.

Coco, how was it? You are correct, I should sneek into a matinee and have popcorn for lunch.
I'll wait for your review first!!

I would see this movie in the theater. It is so big, and dramatic that I don't think a TV set would do it justice.

We all loved the movie. We have seen the stage play, and also the concert version of the play and so we were familiar with the music and the story, but this movie version really brings the human condition to the story like never before.

And the costumes and sets were outstanding. The actors were all terrific.

The audience stood and clapped when the movie was over, which doesn't happen often.

So yes, annie17, I think the experience will be worth it. Let me know what you think if you do go.

I saw Les Miz with my daughter and mother a couple of days ago. I thought it was one of the WORST movies I have EVER seen--and definitely the worst musical. The promos talk about a "joyous epic" and I did not see even one joyous scene in the whole darn movie--unless you consider the final scene of all the dead characters manning the battlements in heaven joyous. It was far too long, and the camera work (although it will probably win an Oscar) made me dizzy. My personal opinion is that a lot of those who claim to have loved this horror are only saying so because they think it's SUPPOSED to be great--the same way that people read Dickens or Melville and say they are great because they are SUPPOSED to be great. Andrew Lloyd Weber is highly overrated. I haven't liked anything he wrote since J(esus) C(hrist) Superstar.

Haven't yet seen the movie, but the reviews I read in several newspapers and magazines were definitely mixed.

That shouldn't stop anyone from going to see it, though.

Well, each to their own opinion, but as for me I actually liked the movie, not because I was supposed to, because I did like it.

I would never describe the movie as a joyous epic. It is drama and pretty tragic drama. But the story to me is about human dilemma and struggle, and about our choices and the consequences of our choices, and how those consequences play out in life over time. I love that the story is about love prevailing, and that doing what you believe to be right and true is important. It is also about acts of kindness being all important and life changing.

For me the movie was very moving, and I loved the experience of seeing it. It is one of the best, and most interesting movies I have seen in a long time.

There are several movies that come to mind that to me, were very disturbing but still great movies.

Saving Private Ryan
Apocalypse Now
Braveheart
The Hurt Locker
Schindler's List

Victor Hugo's novel was really depressing, a good hint of it's content would be the name of the piece. Wink I guess it would have been better if it wasn't a musical, but I still want to see it.

BETTER IF IT WASN'T A MUSICAL????? Oh, no! The music is the heart and soul of the movie.

I personally have not seen it yet. I really don't know much about it other than the play has been around for years. I happen to love musicals, but DH doesn't, so I have to wait until I can see it myself.

I haven't seen it yet but did read that the actors had to sing live while they were shooting their parts....no overdubbing in editing. That must have been nerve-racking!

z9, my daughter told me the actors had a piano playing the melody in their earpiece to keep them in tune and on tempo. Still, since they are not known as singers, I'll bet it was a big challenge.
