Do you mix different styles in different rooms i.e. contemporary in one room and vintage Christmas in another?

No. What I do though is to address the degree of formality in each room as well as the room's color scheme. I feel that the later is especially essential as the traditional red and green does not work in my public space scheme. Regarding your question, if your spaces are furnished differently and are not open to each other, I see no reason not to decorate them independently and uniquely.

I do mix different styles because I have some old (old in my family) style decorations that are from many years ago, so I make a small vignette with those. My tree is where I express what I want to have for that year. Lately though silver, white and natural with a white small tree seems to be what I will stick with for a few years.

What kinds of styles do you have Miss L?

No I don't. For my idea of Christmas is traditional. And red and green seem to fit into my decorating scheme.

I have an open concept home so each year a theme is chosen and the holiday decor flows together but doesnt Match.. the rooms are done according to its colors scheme.

Unless magazine photographers are scheduled to show up for a major photo shoot, I think decorating the house should be as eclectic and varied as makes the homeowner happy.

I find myself having a different "theme". For instance...last year I had lots of angels along with a christmas tree. The year before I had lots of Santas. Another year it was lots of poinsettias. Haven't decided what it will be this year....maybe a mixture...lol.

I have a country style house so I use hand crafted stuffed santas in the kitchen and 1 bathroom, snowmen in the dining room and 1 bathroom,in the living room I use both all of this is the traditional red and green.

My Christms decor is a collection of vintage 30's thru 60's, collections of old world santas and small nativity sets, hand crafted items made by me and some others, and things purchased from the 70's to this current year. I just vary them from year to year. Like graciepj said, eclectic and what you enjoy...

I have a very traditional house all the way through. I am attracted to a certain kind of Christmas decorations. I love vintage things from my childhood era which was the late 50's and 60's, old world ornaments on the tree, bells, Christmas books, and colored lights. Any Christmas object I have could go anywhere in my house. So, no, I don't have rooms where a single specific style of Christmas decor is used, and then something else in the next room. I have the same mixed look throughout.

I don't see why you couldn't use different styles in different rooms or even mix them in each room for continuity. I mix styles because most of my house is decorated in an informal cottage/traditional/country/eclectic style. I don't have a lot of contemporary accessories altho have a few.

I use a lot of non-seasonal decor embellished with seasonal. For example I have used glass fishing floats, handblown glass balls, or vintage glass insulators embellished with mini-lights, garlands, or winter foliage stems. While I have many collections I've never collected seasonal things so just add some extra bling to my usual decor. I often use my extensive collection of silver holloware at Christmas as it really looks pretty with mini-lights and lots of candle light.

We have lots of golf decor in our home, so some of my trees are golf related.

The small tree in my kitchen has gingerbread, cookie cutters, small kitchen tools, and peppermint ornaments.

The sunroom is dedicated to the Magi and in addition to kings, it has a purple and blue theme as those were the colors of ancient royalty. (Think ROYAL blue, LOL)

The grandkids room has small trees with unbreakable ornies.

My sewing room has a tiny tree with spools of thread from my late DGM's sewing basket as the ornies and a tape measure as the garland.

My MBR has red and green bedding for the holiday, so that tree is all red and green ornies and lights.

The dining room tree is gold for one of the 3 gifts and the gold nativity is also in there.

The living room is the Santa room and that tree is all red and gold.

My guest room is the angel room and the angels hang (literally some of them, LOL) in there.

Besides trees, EVERY room has at least one nativity set somewhere in the room.

Did I mention Christmas is my B-day = over the top decor. I know it, but I love it!!

I used to go crazy over Christmas decorating, but I just don't have the energy anymore! Dragging all that stuff out of the attic is just too much. I think I'm only going to do a tree, window candles, spotlight and my mantel and of course, the dining room table. Most of my stuff is older, things my kids made and a few new items I just picked up. I tend to decorate around the color of my rooms too.

I hear ya, Wanda. We have really pared down Christmas decorating over the years. DH was the one who had to lug all that stuff out of the attic storage, on pull-down stairs. No mas.

So, it was with great relief that we donated virtually 75% of our stuff to Goodwill. Now, we have a nicely edited array of favorite ornaments and a new faux fir tree for the living room. We don't even put lights outside anymore. Just two large urns with lighted topiary trees at the entry. Phew!

Style Gal, if space permits, a tree in the kitchen can be quite charming especially if it's lit. I once featured a tall slimline tree in a corner near my breakfast table. The only embellishment were green lights since that was the predominant color in the kitchen. Other areas might feature a small tabletop tree on a kitchen island. That tree might be in keeping with this space if decorated in culinary themes such as some of the following: GINGERBREAD PEOPLE, CANDIES, CHEFS, MINI COOKING UTENSILS, CINAMMON STICKS W/APPLES OR DRIED APPLE SLICES, FRUITS, CUPCAKE AND OTHER BAKED GOODS ORNAMENTS, TEA CUPS/THEME OR EVEN HOLIDAY PET THEME ORNAMENTS (my DIL does this to honor the dog). BTW, for a custom look throughout your kitchen you might extend the theme onto tabletop, over windows or doors, and/or around a chandy or pendant lights. Always keep safety and functuality in mind in this task space. Keep in mind that this is the heart of every home where family and friends gather. What better place to decorate for the holidays?

I would say my style is traditional red and green. One year I was into gold. Now I'm drawn to aqua blues,grays and creams. I also like purples. So much to choose from my head is spinning!

My Christmas decorating is the one area where I try to be less of a control freak. Our tree has a mix of ornaments that mean something to each other, either as nostalgic reminders of our different ages,treasured hand me downs, gifts,or souveniers.

The older I get the less stuff I like to store and schlepp. So I've been leaning more and more towards natural magnolia, bay laurel, and dried fruit that gets tossed at the end of the season.

We have gradually edited our decorations over the past few years. Even gave our children our huge collection of Dept.56 Villages. It got to the point where I couldn't face carrying all those boxes from the basement, unpacking and setting up. This way they and their children can enjoy what we collected for many years and we have the enjoyment of seeing them when we visit. As far as decor, ours is an eclectic mixture of whatever we like...if we like it, we use it....I don't decorate for a magazine spread...I use decorations that have meaning for me.
