The problem is I don't know just what kind of wood, etc to use. I have 19 stairs straight up and that is my next project. Right now they are carpeted and just to so very hard to maintain. Can anyone that has done this huge job show some pictures and give me ideas? Would just love to see your pictures of your before and after staircases. Seems like a very big job to me. Also, I will have the entry and the hall match the stairs. Thanks so much! Pat
Pat, I took the carpet off of the stairs in my old house and underneath were wood treads. I could not believe that someone would carpet over the beautiful wood.
In my new house there is carpet on the stairs but there is not wood underneath. My neighbor had hers done and from what I understand you can buy the treads at Home Depot or Lowes. I am guessing that you will have to stain them.
I did get a price to have mine done and it is about $1,500. I am one of those people that believes that I can do anything so I am really wanting to tackle this project. I just have to get hubby on board to help!!!!

Thank you Laura, I will look at Lowes, I have high quality carpet on my stairs and what that means is, it is much too thick, gathers way too much dust and dirt. I know it will be an expensive project to redo with a wood treads and floor with the entry, even tho entry is not that big, will want it all wood. Sure the wood under the carpet is just plywood also. Thanks.
Since no one else has jumped in, I will....there are issues here...code issues, so ask someone who is knowledgeable in this area. Specifically, the rise on each step, including the first and last step, must be equal, and any changes you make by changing out the steps and floors will effect the rise. Good luck!

Wooden steps are beautiful - but they also need maintenance. If you have kids and dogs the treads will get scratched up and marked from the traffic going up and down; dust will collect on the stairs; they are noisy; they can squeek when the wood swells and shrinks; they can be slippery; all these reasons is why those with wooden steps often put runners on them etc. No matter what - stairs are a lot of work.

i have wood stairs and while i toy with putting a carpet runner on them....I do like being able to sweep them off instead of taking the vacuum to it. It just seems easier...
A word of caution if you tend to run around your house in stocking feet...wood stairs can be slippery. I do love the look of stained treads and painted risers. You can also make the risers out of MDF if they're going to be painted. Two recent projects I worked on the clients removed carpet and replaced with wood and both of them have since put a runner on the stairs. Partly because of the noise issue and partly because of safety. It seems like a shame to cover something so pretty Sharon
