That floor is very clever, but what I love is the blue & white commode!

That is the best example of what I have seen in photos out there. I wanted to do that in our bath with a clawfoot tub. But that was in the early 70's when pennies were actually worth something! People told me it would be too expensive come years down the road when copper prices would go up! Ha ha, the penny is so devalued that it makes it a more affordable floor now! lol

It's a pretty cool idea. I have heard many time, that the penny will be taken out of circulation soon and no longer used. It's time to start saving them up Mary Ruth, and do your floor!

I've seen that before and I love the idea. I've also seen it used as a backsplash. I wonder how many pennies it would take to do a whole floor??

someone on here once posted a pic of a penny kitchen floor. I think it is very neat and like the bathroom a lot.

I am not sure how many, but each one of those rows on that floor posted above has over 100 in it X the rows and then the full width!

You figure 10' X 10' space (10'X12"=120)
120X120=14,400 and since pennies are not a full inch approx 3/4" so the number changes to around 19,200 pieces for the space!
Divide by 100 (100 per $1 value) and that means $192 for the floor, not bad! Of course add glue, or thin set and grout.

I have always loved the look of copper.

I found out something for you LOS, remember the Apple cider vinegar concoction I put on my oak table, and you asked me if I put copper in the vinegar what would happen?
I researched it online and have not tried it yet. It turns wood a pale azure blue. Now that is along with the Amber that still comes up from the wood. Interesting, I will have to try it out on some scrap of wood around here.

I love the idea of a backsplash made with pennies. I feel like I saw a countertop done in pennies once.

Sorry if it's been posted before. I had never seen an entire floor done with pennies!

OK here is one, just multiply the #'s for the pennies X5 = for amount and cost!

with a nice gray finish, would look great with Greige look for backsplash, or foyer flooring or... somewhere!

I love copper and love the look, I just don't think I'd have the patience to lay all those pennies!

I hear ya, would be like Arlington Cemetery with all of them lined up, one out of line would really stand out!

I just thought of a patio round table top would be nice to do with pennies or nickels! Or lining a serving tray, would go well with old silver pieces (I might try that one!)

Oh wow, receiving pennies in the mail 'pennies from heaven'! What a cool idea!

I would want nickels, and I have some saved already, so I wouldn't need anymore. I am going to figure out a way to use this idea!

Perhaps if you think 'smaller' project you might find a way to use pennies? What needs copper around your home? A square planter box, a tray liner, small table top?

Imagine a stove hood cover? One way to get a copper hood for pennies! lol

The fartherist I ever got using pennies was to glue them to a bowling ball for a gazing ball in my yard. I shined them all up and put a fixative on them......It has lasted a couple of years.

I have been thinking about this penny floor business all week. Although I love the rich coppery color, something about using pennies as tile doesn't set right with me. Not really sure why, but I'm just not feeling it.

Very cool! You know what I am thinking??? Our house has a copper roof and we are going with some copper accents on the porch stairways and ramp rails...just small touches. Maybe I should use pennies to tile some small side table tops to go on the porches. I've got some other ideas floating around my head after seeing this.

It would probably be faster to install the floor than it takes to roll all the pennies and take to the bank!

I reallly warmed to that copper idea -- especially for a backsplash. My DH cut me down at the pass -- said it was too gimmicky.
Now I am starting to agree with him. I think it's something that looks really neat for a bit and then it gets old and tired looking with the green coating that eventually ends up on them taking the appealing shine away.
Maybe for a small round table.

I love that! Funny! I remember doing that! We used to have one of those large plastic water bottles you turn upside down over a dispenser unit. We had it empty in a corner of a room and would empty all our change in it, then we rolled all the change and then (whole family) voted on what to spend it on, I can still remember counting and recounting and rolling!

I wouldn't want it on a floor in a bathroom. I can't imagine it would ever feel clean. And the texture must be weird on bare feet. I still think a backsplash would be cool. I would do it all on thin luan first and put it up so I could remove it if I wanted to, later, and keep it for a table top, etc.

I like the idea of outdoor projects. I think the patina would be lovely.

Have you ever had a 5 gal. bucket of change? I have and a guy from the bank had to carry it in for me and dump it in the coin seperater and counter. I don't remember how much it was but I decided then ...never again

YAP, and the coins get dirty from being handled and dusty from being saved in a container! In Virginia, I said 'not moving this change!' We took it to the bank, as we were walking away in the parking lot, I looked back into the bank and saw that the next 'in line' were standing there, nothing moving... the machine was 'dirty' and needed cleaning! oh my!

I do keep change in my car (quarters) for any meeter at that beach I might have to feed!

That's a good idea, I also thought about covering a plain wooden box. Or a stepping stone for the garden. Or put them on an old round silver tray. Or embellish a statue. Actually anywhere one could use ceramic mosaic one could use coins so the possibilities are almost endless.

I do like the look of that bathroom floor but agree that it's not the smooth cleanable surface I'd want in such a room. I think you could use an epoxy resin clear coat on top which is thick and leaves a smooth level surface.

It looks great, but i'd always feel guilty that I used money like that. I feel guilty when they squish the pennies flat in the carnival machine. I'm just a guilty person, i Guess.

I surely would hate to put in all that work to create the penny flooring and then grow tired of the copper look. I did, however, purchase a wooden tray last year that I fully intended to cover with pennies. I've been sidetracked with planning for a new grandbaby. This inspires me again, though. lol

I think that's a real conversation starter! I'd do it in a small powder room but not for a bath that got a lot of constant use. It's very interesting!

Wendek...using the pennys directly on the floor is really no different than going out and buying tile or flooring; you've used money for that too. This way you cut out the middle man and put your money directly on the floor.

pennies are not worth what they were (how they are made now verses 50 yrs ago or so). So, it is not like they are going to 'increase' in value any longer.

I want to use nickles on a small table top or in a tray. I will put all the change required into the tray first to see how heavy it makes it to make sure I can lift it! lol

In the carnival machine, those are tokens premade, you deposit the penny, you get a token, simple idea. Was good for way back when pennies had more copper in them and the token is some colored metal or had very little value.

I have seen coins flattened by being left on the railroad tracks though, funny looking, flat and all print is gone mostly.

If I were putting pennies on my floor, I would feel the need to put them all face up or down and all pointed the same way.

Me, too! And the colors would have to be evenly distributed so there weren't too many darks and lights close to each other. It would take weeks for me to get it right. LOL

I thought of that too Oldhouseluvr, and I want to make it like with evenly distributed worn ones and some showing heads and some showing tails up. and not lined up so that I don't get 'weird' about seeing one out of line... I will do this on a tray without 'over thinking' it so I can enjoy the project! I will wash them all first. Money is so dirty! LOL

You ladies are hilarious! I have found that the most successful decorating in our house has been when we, "just went for it.". We have a lovely are arrangement in our stairwell, where we had tons of framed art that we didn't want the glass to get broken as it lay in storage unsung, and I just handed him a piece, he threw a screw in the wall and put it up. We eyeballed it, and it looks cool. I need to have things even, perfect, which keeps me from doing anything exciting!

The pennies would drive me mad!

Even if you're the slightest bit OCD...you shouldn't be doing a penny floor! LOL!
