Simple color question for Male college students bedroom Sign In/Join

Hi yall just joined I feel like I have no idea what I am doing when it comes to making colors look good together. Summer is hitting me hard though and I figured if I am going to get a new comforter that wont roast me I might as well get a new color to change things up.

I have a pretty small room and I smashed a queen size bed in there. I have some pictures I am planning on putting up soon but I need to get a few frames still. The walls are a cream ish color I just put up some blinds which are white....but way better then the awful curtains that were there before. (Me and a bunch of guys rent this house while we are going to school its super old)

The first pic is of my current room. I have had a thing for purple lately the main thing I am changing is going to be the comforter. To a thinner one mostly so if none of the new colors I find work I will just get a thinner comforter and put my cover on it. I dont care to be honest I just thought it would be cool to have a 2nd color.

These 3 pics are of duvet covers I found online. I like the idea of green in my room on top of the purple sheets. What do yall think? If this is an awful idea please tell me. Even better if you have suggestions or links for me I would love it. Some have the sage green and some have the hunter green which do yall like more? I was thinking the sage green would atleast lighten the room up a bit.

This is a green comforter I found that I liked would save me from buying another duvet cover / thinner comforter combo.

Really no reason for this last one its just the all season down alternative comforter I found.

I didnt post any links to the actual items because I didnt know if there were any rules against that but I found all of these on buy . com and I could post links if people want a better look at things.

ALSO what the **** do you use to cover the foundation/box spring of your bed mine is always showing and it drives me nuts. I figured they would make like box spring sheets or something but idk the only sheets I find are in sets and its just for the mattress. Also what color would you buy for the foundation would I want it to match my comforter or my sheets? Or should I try and match it at all the likely hood of finding the exact color is slim I would think.

I like the mix (for a guy) of taupe, khaki, ivory or fawn with gray or smoke. You can mix the two as well on the same bed. I would get a set of chocolate as well for back up for when parents, or special friends visit. You can use the bottom sheet of that chocolate set on the box spring and leave it there, then use the pillow covers for second set in back of the other pillow cases.

Ivory and chocolate make a good couple of sets to intermix.

I am assuming you are in a cooler climate (did not post your general location) so a comforter is a nice all year round choice with duvet to wash and keep up the cleanliness of the bedding. I would also get an all-cotton regular blanket (looks like it is a weave) and it is great for light cover, and becomes insulating layer if you need it in the dead of winter. Make sure it is cotton or mostly cotton so it will breathe.

Good luck in your college dorm and hopefully pick colors that motivate you to study! LOL There will be times you will wish you could get into bed but need to forge ahead with schoolwork! I still remember the long nights I was up 1/2 asleep to finish a project or research.

I wish you all the best in your endeavor, and remember you really only get a chance to do this once.

In the summer, I often use my duvet cover without any filler...much cooler. They do make box spring covers. A quick search on "box spring cover" will bring up a bunch of options.

Ah just use the fitted sheet for the mattress on the box spring.....Didn't even think of that for some reason. Would be cheap as well.

So Mary are you suggesting that I get Chocolate and Ivory sheet sets and just keep my Taupe comforter and just switch the sheets in out to get a color change?

Speaking of gray for a guys room I did just order a small area rug for my room thats gray ish.

I was thinking that if you got a couple of sets of sheets, they can easily get swapped out, you know if you get pizza on the sheet just before someone comes over... the colors would still look good together if you use a different color for the sheet. It will look like you did it on purpose (mix them up) and you can use all one color or mix. This makes you not have to have the same bedding all the time. And if one piece gets a stain or ruined, then you still have a set.

You can buy one gray accent pillow to match your rug and you will be coordinated!

Sounds like you are off to a good start!

I think I will get a chocolate set of sheets... Only problem is my purple ones are really nice I spent quite a bit on them so I have to stomach spending that much again lol. Cant go back to cheap ones now Smile .

What about the comforter do you like the green in any of the pics above? Sage or hunter green for a comforter on this bed? I think the green would go well with the chocolate sheets as well correct?

Here are links to the two im leaning towards at the moment. I am considering the top link in sage the most atm. I dont know if the hunter green will make my room feel to dark.

Have you considered black/white combo? I used that in my son's room in later years...he picked it out. It was a window pane (check-pattern) that was crisp/clean and not busy.

Well as far as making the room look too dark with the hunter green, I think your purple already goes there. I think the Hunter green would coordinate with the purple in color weight and visual balance. Always great to save money!

I would then go with a gray duvet cover. Not too dark in the gray. You could go with tan as well.

You have given your bedding a lot of consideration. What else will you have going on in your room as far as color and furniture? Is it a shared room or private (only your things will be in the room)?

Alright I like the hunter green more I just thought it would be to dark.

The room is private but its tiny. I have the gray rug on order and I have a 60' writing desk thats about the same wood as my bed. It has a built in closet and between those things the whole thing is completely full.

I have quite a few things for the walls but I need to get em framed up before I put em up. (hopefully this week) I have a snowboard on the wall hanging above my computer (knock on wood, dont fall plz) that looks cool and its a really bright color.

One of the prints and posters I got are all a bit brighter as well so hopefully that will keep it from looking like a cave.

As for the sheets I was still talking about the duvet when I asked on colors. So are you suggesting getting a gray duvet and then having green, purple, chocolate sheets available on switch? Or suggesting using the green and purple together?

I was talking about getting the duvet cover in Hunter Green. But I like the idea of gray as well.

Do you like medium gray with chocolate color? If not it would be hard to exactly match the chocolate, that is why I didn't mention that color for a duvet.

If your art has any gray or other color that would look good with your sheets, you might try and be brave and do that. I would experiment with other colors only on extra decorative pillows so that you can toss them on the made bed.

How GREAT to have your own room, not only for privacy, quiet when studying, but also for no big clash of colors and decor!

Sometimes the duvet covers are one color and a lighter color on other side.

My reasoning for gray duvet:
When the bed is made with the duvet pulled all the way up you get the gray look with accent pillows with other colors. You can put pillows across the long side against a wall for a sofa look (or daybed look).

Then when duvet is folded in 1/2 or so on the foot area of the bed, you have sheets showing and gray duvet as accent and your accent pillows offer a different look depending on the sheets you use. You will have many options.

All of the posts are giving you great ideas.
It just so happens that my own bedroom is a combo of plum and sage-ish green and grey carpet.
So I am a bit biased toward those colors.
Having said that, I think taupe, ivory and black are neat for any room and I'd do it in a hot second if I had another room to decorate.
Be loose with it. It's fun.

- WOW this turned into a longer post then I thought it would. -

Is there a point when I have to much stuff on my walls? On one wall I have a snowboard hanging and a movie poster on the opposite side I have a print thats about 16x24 above my bed. I have 3 small pictures I am planning on putting up as well all kind of close together as well as a 24x24 poster I would like to hang.

Everything I have on my wall so far snowboard/prints/posters are all bright colors as well which I like as I guess a contrast to my dark bed and desk.

I am thinking about putting up a shelf or 2 to put things on. As well as maybe a couple of prints right at my door way when you walk in. Something with a a funny statement or something on it.

Kind of a funny shaped room so I have a lot of open wall space but a lot of it can only fit small pictures.

BTW I am using basic black frames with all of them. Bigger ones 1' thick and the smaller ones like 1 3/4' thick.

Also I found a chocolate fitted sheet for the box spring of my bed on clearance somewhere so score on that. I ordered the new comforter that should be much thinner for summer time and the Hunter Green duvet cover. I am now just looking for a chocolate sheet set that I like to be the price I want it to be.

My gray rug is on its way still.

I am now looking out for a gray throw pillow like you suggested. Would you say just straight gray or should I look for something gray with maybe a chocolate stripe or swoop through it.

I am the type of person that likes 'stuff' on the walls. I guess wallpaper fills that need for me at times. LOL

A couple of shelves with things on them if good for giving you the relief of not all 'flat' 2 dimensional on the walls.

I like the idea of all black frames to unify all your art/prints hung on the walls.

What a score! To find a brown fitted sheet on clearance! You fit right in on this board, we all love style at good prices!

I am sure you are getting excited about your college life and this room being your temporary home. The gray rug will help you to really see the colors starting to come together.

I think your accent pillow choice could wait since you will 'find' it when you least expect it! You could do a couple of small plain gray with very small print if any, then look for something in a print that ties all prints together, up to you, the more creative part starts with accessories!

You have done great with documenting what you have, how you will use it, and what to make it all cohesive. Good job with this project!

I hope we get to see a photo or two of the finished project!

Ya I will take some pics next week when I get the rugs in and the other pics framed.

I was thinking it would be easy to find some gray curtains for my windows if I dont find the right pillow for the bed.

Are you going to need room darkening treatments? If so you can install a room darkening roll down shade (least expensive) and pull that down and close the curtains and you will be able to darken the room when needed sleep is desired.

I remember college days with pulling all-nighters at times when finals were coming up, or a project needed finishing (Interior Design drawings and material boards).

Putting my two cents in rather late and admittedly didn't read every response. I think a lime green (yellowy green) works well w/ your purple sheets if you want to pair it w/ a green.
Also, a slate gray (not too dark) is a good masculine palette.
Keep in mind that both greens and grays are considered neutrals so you can opt to change out the sheet colors at whim.

Well I am warm now but even then I still sleep with my duvet just because I like to have it. My current one is very very thick though so the one I have picked out is about 1/4-1/3 as thick so I think it will be quite a bit cooler then my current.

New rugs are arriving next week I think Tuesday and I just got a new body pillow through my work so I ordered a gray cover for it and I am going to use that instead of buying a random gray pillow when I see one.

Not having my new desk is driving me crazy. Ive had it picked out for a couple months now but there is always something that nudges it out on my to buy list. But now that I almost have my room "finished" this old glass desk just does not fit in anymore.

Although there are some new speakers I need for my Home theater setup :P ...Ugh...I need to go win big in Vegas or something.... Smile

3ish years and I am working in the media department.

On a queen bed a queen duvet is only a few inch's wider then the bed is itself. So the sheets show. This doesnt really bother me personally but it made me wonder are you suppose to use a king duvet on a queen bed so the comforter hangs down all the way past the mattress?

That sounds 'short', sure it is not a 'full' size by mistake?

I use king size blankets on my queen guest bed.

You could pull it forward when making the bed so that the mattress in the front is covered. Unless it is too short to do that!

Well with 3ish years, I can see you 'moving into' your space because you will enjoy it for a while. Good luck with your studies!

SOOO an update. I got my grey pillow cover but it is way wider then my pillow so I am going to have to get someone that knows how to sew trim it down a bit so the pillow doesnt swim around in it.

I got my curtains up and they turned out great found some cheap at ikea that worked color wise. 20/20 hindsight though should have washed em before I put em up now they are all wrinkled.

Got 1 of 3 mat's in for my pictures the others arrive tomorrow (friday) as well as my last frame I needed for another piece I have been wanting to put up.

I got my new comforter the thinner one for summer days but the hunter green duvet cover wont be here til Monday next week.

I ordered my new desk I should have it in here by the end of the week Smile FINALLY....

Momboman,
Thanks for posting your update!

If you want a firmer pillow but have only a real soft one, that is a good trick to do that stitching up lenghwise to tighten the case, firms up the pillow!

If you have an iron, (could borrow one) and put on steam, and then place it in front of the drapery, this is what they do with new clothes they get in the clothing stores before they hang them out on the showroom floor. You can also spritz them with fine water spray and then the 'humidity' will straighten out some of the folds. If they are washable, you can spritz them with water and throw in the dryer for a few minutes.

Good your pictures are almost done! AND your desk on the way! Good for you! FINALLY! Doesn't that word sound so good about now?

Wow it seems like it has been forever now but I have been super busy. I finally have my room "finished" at least for now it looks like I want it to and I can stop spending my money on it.... (onto the next project lol) But I did take some pics of it now. They seem even bigger then the last ones though so I am just going to do links to them so it doesnt make the thread huge and slow for everyone.

It is not a large room but it has all you need! I like the Einstein poster! You hung all your art up high, leaving room to add more underneath! You made your bed, (for company, all of us viewing)!
Very nice, and you put a lot of thought into what you would like your home away from home to be like to be your base, your place to recharge.

Well done!

Thanks for all your help and suggestions. Has been a fun couple months figuring everything out. I am pleased with how everything turned out and ya I am keeping my eye out for other things to fill in a couple of spots but not in a hurry for that waiting for something that I see and "must have" Smile

Next project is fixing up and old turntable so I can throw on some records and throw some retro parties.... (much cheaper project this time :P ) Then maybe a living room overhaul. Who knows lol.
