that the minute you change one thing, it starts a chain reaction? I thought I had mostly finished with my kitchen and breakfast room except for replacing the old looking wall ovens in the kitchen. Now that I don't have a white table in the breakfast room and its mahogany, it all looks different. I don't think putting a white tablecloth on the table is going to cut it. Hate the new flooring. Hate the wall color. Hate the new chandelier. I think I'm back to square one.......UGH.

Yes, I feel ya! I call it "scope creep" when one the scope of your project/update/change leads creeps to another and another and another and so on and so on and so on!!! But it usually all ends well!
|
Sometimes if you give yourself a little time to life with changes, they settle in and you end up liking them.
|
I agree, let it settle, something drastically different in your home screams like loud music you don't care for, it seems as if the BIG presence quiets down. LoveHomeDecor, I like that term 'scope creep' and even when a designer does the public spaces and all matches and coordinates, the bedrooms then look tired.! Do you have a photo of this space to share? Perhaps balancing that mahogany in other areas can help with making the color of wood fit in. When I fall in love with a color, I need to fit some of it in every room so that it is married to the rest of the house and not just a temporary guest or phase in the house. It needs to tie into the theme and decor as if it were planned, not an after thought. LOL! Can totally relate! Post a pic, would love to see your space.

I agree Lu -- sometimes you just have to get used to something because it is so different -- it takes time to "grow on you"! But I do understand what you mean about one thing leads to another which leads to another . . . But you've just done the kitchen -- right? Sounds like the wood replaced white and it is so different . . . but live with it for a while . . . if after six months or so it's still like "nails on chalkboard" you can always paint the walls and get a new chandelier . . . and if you garage or estate sale you could always be on the look out for one even before the six months is up! Would love to see pictures -- with old table and new table! Actually, would love to see pics of your new table! Martha

Many of us can indeed relate to the domino-deco effect especially if we can't make major changes all at once and/or hire pros to help us reach our vision. The new addition often makes the older things look worn in comparison and you find yourself wanting to make everything come to gether in a cohesive manner pronto. To dive in whole hog in a major remodel without careful thought, prep and planning can be counterproductive and wasteful tho. I agree w/ the advice to live with the change a while and also to rethink and evaluate what you have. The "RE" can come via things like RElocating, REfinishing, REupholstering, REpurposing, REpainting, REsurfacing, etc., etc.. which can save you dollars if you're not opposed to a little sweat equity. In other words, be REsourceful. Let the room evolve and you're more apt to REalize your dream space in due time.

REgarding your post, well said! Good REsoning with REsources that are already owned! REflecting on what is actually important to how you live is the best way to REalize what you need, especially when you REtire and downsize! It's true, just let it settle. My south-western facing family room was so bright it was like living on the sun in there. When i put up solar shades it darkened the room considerably and I did not like it. After a while I don't even notice the 'darkness' and it's much appreciated to abate the summer sun.

Absolutely! I was just saying this morning that I'd like to move my area rug to the dining room, but then I'd have to repaint the walls and then the curtains wouldn't match, etc...... DH told me that I was obsessed and why couldn't I just get it right the first time? Cuz I'm never completely happy with what I do! That's not so hard to understand is it???? Wanda

Mary Ruth, you obviously caught the RE-bug. So sorry. Take two RElaxers and be sure to REturn my call in the morning. ;-)

Absolutely, I don't think I will ever be "finished" with my home as there are too many things I love out there. This last choice, of adding turquoise/teal in my home, is still going on. The good thing is, mostly everything I had was second hand and I'm selling much of it at the same price as I paid for it. That money goes towards different things. Eases the guilt some. Being thrifty also helps a lot, even if you don't shop second hand, you can always find sales. Sometimes you have to visit the stores every week to find them though. ****Look at objects not only for what they are, but for what they could be, vg****

I used the table for the first time on Sunday with only 1 leaf in it so I guess it was about 7 feet long. There were 10 of us but 4 children. It did a GREAT job!!! Doesn't look as bad to me now but the chandelier still looks AWFUL and I don't like the color of paint on the wall with the mahogany colored table. I'll see if it looks better with a white tablecloth on it all the time. I envy you all who LOVE to decorate. I hate to shop. Can never find what I want and DETEST decorating:::::::laughing:::::::::

Love, Lu, How about the least expensive way out of this situation? Clean off the wax... then paint the table white. You will have the table you want, and the house will go back to 'order' as it once was so that you do not fee the invasion? At a later date, you can have the table (professionally refinished to save you heartaches) restored when you are ready to remodel (or change paint and chandelier. This will restore peace in the house and get rid of the feeling of 'having' to redo the whole house! And the table will look good in white I am sure. That's a good suggestion Mary Ruth but I would cut off my hand before I would paint over that crotch mahogany. I'm going to have the woman from the paint store come recommend a new color for the kitchen and breakfast room before I make any major changes. Please know I am DEEPLY grateful for your taking time to not only suggest something but for even thinking of a solution to my dilemma.

Love, Lu, You made a decision, Good for you! Will we see a picture of the NEW ideas? Sounds great! At least you are not on the fence, you are working towards a solution where your home can be tranquil again... and you will have that beautiful table in the center of it all!
