One of my closest friends DGD asked for a sewing machine for Christmas (I just found out about it yesterday). While I used to make my own clothes, etc. and worked in fabric store, my sewing now consists of an occasional hem, repair, whatever unless it's decorating related. I've offered to help her get started. So the question is, any good ideas what to start with? She talked to me about helping her take down the old wallpaper in her bedroom and paint. I'm wondering if we go that route pillows might be a good place to start? Simple curtains? I'll see her tonight and I'll get a better idea of why she wanted the machine and what she wants to do with it, but I'd love to be able have some ideas ready. So I turn to my favorite group of talented, creative people, all of you. TIA

What a wonderful idea! You could have lots of fun helping out your DGD.
In addition to pillows or simple curtains, how about a duvet cover and sham covers made from beautifully patterned sheets. Then you can help her find poly-fill stuffers.
Simplicity has a great sewing book. Called Simply The Best or something like that. There are some great home dec books out too. Will BRB, want to check out a site for you.

Don't forget all the machine brand sites have projects and lots of info. There are several good magazines like Sew Creative and Threads that have good info and projects with how to's.

In our middle school, the kids all take a sewing class and the first project is a square pillow. My sister sews and started her granddaughters with projects like simple window valances. Anything with easy sewing and straight seams should be good starter projects. What a thoughtful gift to share your time and talent with her! Merry Christmas!
