I've posted a picture of the awkward nook in my living room. The living room has a slanted ceiling which peaks into a nook space. The nook space is backed up to a bedroom upstairs. Going up the stairs you can look over the banister and see into the nook. I'm not sure what to do with this nook! It's big. It's about 10 feet long, 3 feet wide, and 8 feet tall. I have an idea of turning in into a library. Adding some bookshelves and taking out the small wall on the left so I could get to the space from the stairs. Other than that, i don't know what to do. It's not very wide. Any decoration ideas? Thanks for all of your input.

Oh my, the possibilities boggle the mind! I see a great place for art and sculpture, seasonal decor...think Christmas trees...collections of antiques, even small furniture pieces. It all depends on what you like, what you have and what you're willing to acquire.

I'm sure others will pop in and give you lots of ideas...have fun with this!

Is there any USE for this space in the room behind it?

Could also get some bifold doors on it in the front and use shelving for off-season storage. The doors would provide some sort of detail on the wall, and would be storage behind it!

Behind the nook is an upstairs bedroom. The only was to get to the nook is a 10 foot ladder. I like the idea of the door. Could add a lot of texture. But the doors would have to be HUGE, and on the top where the ceiling is, is on a slant.

Easy fix...you'd have to frame out for the doors, so you just drop a little "wall" down from the ceiling to hang the doors from. That WOULD make a great storage closet...a little "attic", and if you could access from the landing, even better.

I don't really want to use the space for display. At one point there were antiques and a couple items hanging on the walls. It was ok, but when I scampered up a 10ft ladder to vacuum I was very nervous. If i were to leave decor up there, then I guess I wouldn't vacuum all that often. The space is just a pain.

It would make a great closet if you dry-walled it in from the stair side and put a door into the space from the bedroom.

I also vote for completely walling it up from the front and cutting a door to the bedroom. One can never have too much storage.

I'd wall it in too. It's too inaccessible and just a dust trap IMHO. I have to wonder what builders were thinking when they designed these lofty recesses.

If you agree, then just hang oversized art or art object there such as a framed poster, a pretty patterned rug or tapestry to name a few.

I agree with the others. It will make a nice storage space. It may be too tight for a library. Does your floor extend to that area ?

Count me in as one who would rather have extra storage than a place to display unnecessary stuff. I don't understand what builders are thinking when they add those upper areas.

I have one similar to that in our master bath, of all places! Nothing up there but dust at the moment.

I would love it, but I'm wierd! I had some in my former house, but not quiteeee that big. I love to decorate.

You could always hang a quilt up there; doesn't have to be antique.

I've seen these spaces in many new homes. IME, they're usually very difficult to access with little or no usable space and turn into dust catchers.
