I'm choking with laughter. LOS said their town dump is now called a "tranfer station". What a hoot!!! WHAT was the source of that term???

Ever notice the change in language these days.
No more Dead Ends or Speed Bumps. Annoys me no end. Why change something if it isn't broken??

Actually Lu, I just learned recently that this is a state directive. Our town did not elect to change the name.

There is also a corresponding difference to the two facilities (dump v. transfer station) when it was a dump everything was truly dumped (garbage, furniture, papers/bottles, toys, etc. etc. etc in a big pile) now we have "stations" including a swap shop!

Ours have been called transfer stations for a long time. Things are brought there and transferred to the appropriate place for recycling, storing, scrapping, etc.

I thought the name was common. What I find uncommon is how nice LOS' transfer station is.

A transfer station here is a place where one dumps their garbage into bear proof containers and those containers are then 'transfered' by huge trucks and taken to the landfill where they are emptied. Very different from a town dump or landfill.

ETA - These 'transfer stations' are only for people who do not have garbage pick-up because we live in the backwoods. The garbage from town residents that is picked up regularly goes directly to the landfill and they pay for the privilege. We don't pay for garbage pick-up because we don't have that service. We have to do it ourselves. Consequently we have a burn barrel to burn paper, take as much to the recycle station as possible, and periodically take everything else to the transfer station. Just another fun thing to do when one lives in the 'back-of-beyond'! Big Grin We could take it to the landfill but the transfer station seems cleaner and easier.
