Recently had a birthday and my dd always gives me a gift certificate for my fav store, Home sense. I've had my eye on this mirror for weeks now and keep waiting for it to be marked down. Well, it followed me home this week. It was marked down to $70.00. Full price was $200.00 with a compare price of $400 (I think that is what the compare price was since I already thru the slip away).

I love love love this mirror. It does have a chip off the edge of one of the spikes but not a big deal. I'll either paint it silver or have dh cut a small piece of mirror.

Now, for the cabinet underneath. I am not really into painted furniture anymore so I was going to paint it black. It is too short; however, for the area with this mirror now so I'll most likely sell it.

Now, my question. What would you put under this mirror? I can't have anything huge to cut off the doorway. Would you add another chest? sofa type table? or something else? and if so what?

Ignore the tea cart in the livingroom (reflected in mirror). When we bought a new t.v. we needed a stand so the piece of furniture that was there, was moved for the t.v. cabinet. Now I'll be selling the tea cart too and on the search for a new piece for in front of that window. I would move the entry cabinet to the window area but we already have a chest in that room for the t.v. Wouldn't look right to have another one IMO.

I'll show you the chip, really doesn't even show but I'll probably add another piece of mirror or paint it silver.

Okay, I said I don't like painted furniture anymore but I do like this piece.

Thought I'd throw in a pic of the new cabinet I bought last birthday. It was marked down to $120 I believe. I love it. It now has our t.v. on it. Still have to make some holes in the back for wires. The drawers are velvet lined. Hubby is going to hinge one of the drawers so we can add our vcr/dvd player. It makes an ugly t.v. look much better.

My first impression about what to put under your mirror is to use something chunky and bulky and absolutely not delicate (like the painted piece you show in the picture). The mirror has a very strong presence, and needs something strong to ground it.

Cocok, you mean the one that is under it now, or the other one? Or are you saying that the piece under it now is delicate?

CCC, I know you love that chest. I may play around with it to make it taller, not sure yet.

Lu, he is old. He was never a good jumper and has a fear of heights. He has a bed in the livingroom and one in the bedroom. He loves his beds. He slept beside me for years but I always had to lift him up. I sleep much better now that there is only dh taking up half the bed. The furball use to take up another 1/4 so it didn't leave me with much room Wink

JC., thanks. Chips don't bother me, all it means for me is great deals.

Brenda I really, really love that mirror! I also love both chests esp the shaped one (you know what I mean. . . they both have shapes but the bowed one)

I agree with Cocok though about the chest under the mirror and the mirror being incompatible. The sizes are good but not the style of that chest. Don't fix the chip (which I can't see) it adds character.

Cassia, thanks. My dog is a sweetie but he is not a cuddler at all, never was and he's around 15 now so I don't think he'll start now. Little stinker use to cuddle in bed to keep warm.

BR, thanks. It was meant to be mine. If I see things that are too expensive, I wait. If they get marked down, then they are meant to be mine, if not, well, they were meant for someone elses home. My bday fell at the right time too.

I can certainly see why you fell in love w/ this gorgeous mirror. It's a showpiece. I agree a more substantial dresser or chest under it would be ideal. I love the idea of a black piece perhaps w/ glass or chrome knobs. I know you'll find just the right dresser/chest to compliment and balance the mirror. Don't you just love it when a purchase leads to a domino effect? Wink

Wowser! Now that's a mirror...she's a beauty. It's so gorgeous, that I believe the table should be quite plain so as not to detract from it. It could certainly be a wonderful table/chest, but the two you pictured are too attention grabbing. As well, someone mentioned scale...it should be pretty big to balance that large mirror, wider by several inches for sure.

A really great birthday present, vg! Enjoy the mirror and your special day.

Sorry, I meant the one that is under the mirror now is too delicate. The shape of the other piece, the one with the curved bottom, doesn't seem right either. Not enough weight at the base to balance the mass and visual weight of the mirror.

Maybe look for something Hollywood Regency - ish, but not with long legs.

That mirror is quite a conversation piece! Kudos on the great price.

ITA about putting something simple beneath it. I know you like black painted pieces, but I could see something large, painted white to match your wood trim so the mirror really stood out as the centerpiece of the room.

MR, I've been looking at mirrored pieces but I'm thinking that it may be too much mirror with the mirroed vanity in the bathroom. I wonder what a painted silver piece would look like?

Frou, Mom and I go to a few yard sales on Friday. I'll be keeping my eyes open. I should check out kijiji (Canadas version of craigs list) too.

Belstone, thanks. I loveeeeeeee my mirror. I wish I could capture the bling in pics. It is a very large mirror too but doesn't look it in the pics. Only thing about a substantial piece underneath it, is that I have to be careful not to block the doorway. It has to be narrow.

Cocok, the other one would be too large anyways. I can't add a substantial piece due to the doorway. I like the idea of finding something with drawers too as we put out gloves in there. I've been considering another mirrored piece but I don't want to repeat what I have in the bathroom. They do have a nice mirrored chest marked down to $130.00 right now but it probably wouldn't last long enough for me to sell the cabinet and my tea cart first Something to consider though, hollywood regency.

Kelly, it is a greyish/taupe, probably more grey than taupe, but blends well with the beige I have in my home too. I love the color. It is called fossil grey. I had it mixed in premier paint from Canadian tire store. http://www.hbmodular.com/item.php?p_ref=179
I can give you the HALF SHOTS receipe on the can. Not sure if it is different in the U.S. though.
Fossil Grey 30YY 56/060
BLK - 58
YOX - 48
OXR - 12

Sharon, thanks. I never considered white. I'm wondering about silver though. What are your thoughts on silver? or even a teal or turquoise?

SBK, thanks for your input. I'll consider white too.

Lisa, thanks Smile

Frappe, thanks Smile

VG painted silver or gray with chrome or silver hardware. You'll find something or it will FIND you!

It could even be a Danish modern small piece that gets reinvented by you!

Here is an example of MCM (Mid Century Modern) by Broyhill, by designer Brasilia.
They sell this stuff on CL around here!

Love the design and the legs!

This one is in perfect condition and the wood is Walnut. But there are pieces that gave great lines that could look great painted, and sometimes without legs and hung on the wall.

OK OK I will stop... ha ha it is like that mirror haunted my mind trying to think of what would go with it, BUT it has to match the rest of your house too...
found this site, where the gal painted a night stand with glossy white. Once you find a good shape and size you like with good clean lines, you could paint it glossy white and add bling on the knobs!

I also like seeing Campaign furniture painted glossy white and redo the brass hardware to silver.

Oh, gosh, VG. I didn't mean mirrored Hollywood Regency. I think another mirrored piece under your mirror would be a mistake as it would offer no contrast in materials.

I used the words "chunky" and "Hollywood Regency-ish" to describe what I was thinking of, but those aren't very clear words.

Here is an example of something similar to what was on my mind:

I would look for something simple to contrast with the ornate quality of the mirror. Also I think something solid or heavy looking would ground the combination.

(this is just a pic off of google)

Or something simple like this could work, as long as it wasn't too leggy or delicate. I see this piece as solid, chunky-ish.

And if you like black painted things, I think black would be a great color!

(again, just a pic off of google)

PS.
I am just looking at form in these photos. I am not considering the size or scale of the pieces.

MR, thanks for all the input and inspiration pics. I'm thinking the first one would look good in the livingroom area in front of the window. I need something very narrow for this space space in question but I will keep my eyes open for the styles.

the metal furniture is a little too contemporary (industrial looking for me). I'm still getting use to my stainless appliances, lol. Always had white.

The hunt should be fun.

I took another pic so you could see where the doorway is and how I can't have something too big in this space.

Cocok, thanks for the pics. I do like the second one, the first one, not so much. I do need something with legs as the heater is on this walland I can't block it totally off. I know you mentioned black but I actually love the color of the second one too but I'd go much darker, more teal.

I am trying not to overdo the teal/turquoise but it is hard. I have seen some beautiful pieces painted teal and love them.

Forgot to add, ignore the lamp, I'll be eventually changing that out too.

I am adding a chest that I love the color of. I've been thinking of doing my bureau in this color. I could do something like this color under the mirror too.

Zone9alady, thanks. It is so blingy IRL. It looks like a piece of jewelery.

One more picture. In terms of scale, and the art and chest relating, I like this. Of course you would sub out the framed art for your mirror.

(Photo came off the web somewhere. It was in my file. Sorry I don't have the source.)

One more thing...because the mirror is so linear, I would repeat that feeling in whatever you put beneath it. The more linear and the less curvy the better.

cocok,
What a great inspirational photo! Love the stripes on the clothing too. The small cubist art, all looking great. I love all the colors too.

I see the scale to tie in the chest below. I think this is what most people fear, hanging something large on the wall, brings the height of the dresser up. I like that the frame ties in the color of the drawers.
