i need a budget friendly idea for a king headboard. We have antique reproduction furniture in this room and want a headboard that will be complimentary. I've heard of people using doors for headboards. Suggestions, ideas?

A padded headboard can be made in any shape to complement almost any style of decor.

For some reason, when I read "antique reproduction" in your 2nd sentence, vintage screens popped into my head for your headboard. A door's another good idea.

You can use almost anything. A padded headboard's great. It could also be as simple as some framed fabric or stapled fabric panels to complement your decor. Nice thing about those is they're inexpensive and easy to change out, if/when you redecorate.

Depending on the scale of the other items in your room, a screen could be a little lighter than a door, i.e. add less visual weight to the room.

there used to be a man on this site who did a clever head board. (He lived in Bakersfield, Calif. . but I can't remember his name) anyway he took squares of masonite or chipboard, something like that, covered that with foam and then fabric. He then ran a length of velcro on the back of the boards and lengths of velcro on the wall behind the bed. Since the boards were not too heavy the velcro held them.

That would be inexpensive, easy and effective!

Agree, los - the fabric squares headboard works well. We've done them with mdf, foam and faux leather.

Although I haven't tried it myself, I remember seeing somewhere on the internet where someone used a metal garden trellis. It looked very nice.

Although not specifically addressing the initial question, my thinking about headboards is that every bed should have one and that they all should be to protect the walls from heads when people are sitting up in bed reading or what ever.

Also visually they just finish the bed off!

Fireplace surrounds also make interesting headboards. Do a google and sites with pics can illustrate this. Hanging shutters to serve as a headboard is yet another option. Hanging drapery panels from a decorative rod can create a soft headboard assuming no one reads in the bed. Thinking outside the box, a large weathered sign can be utilized as a rustic/country headboard. Along a similar vane, a grouping of framed prints or hanging one or two large framed posters can simulate a headboard where none exists. The object in these examples is to help call attention to the room's focal point. Of course if you read, eat or watch tv in bed the above options are not practical so factor these things when deciding.

For me it's all about comfort. If I can't lean back on the headboard and read or watch tv then it doesn't work. Some want a decorative headboard only but be aware that anything hanging on the wall should be securely fastened if you like to lean back, even with pillows behind you.

And be sure to check out Craigslist for king sized headboards. There are so many different types of headboards you can paint to match your decor or cover with padding and fabrics too!
