A month or two ago there was an estate sale just around the corner. We walked in and found that the house is the exact floor plan as ours. House was on the market, sign is gone, and now a big construction dumpster is out front.
Would it be rude to knock and inquire as to the project? I'm dying to know if they are knocking out that awful dining room wall/door and to see what else they are doing to revamp the 70's. (It would be nice to see before we knock out our wall as planned!)
Go over and ask! They'll be your new neighbors. When I first moved in, my neighbors were in and out wondering what was going on. I loved it. What do you have to lose?

I would do that. I'd let them know that I really like the house and am curious as to what wonderful plans they have in store for it. I think most people are eager and excited to share their plans.
If they're new neighbors, you have a perfect excuse to welcome them to the neighborhood. Tho it sounds like they're super busy, don't visit long. Do mention you both have the same floor plan and casually mention your proposed plan to knock out a wall. This may prompt the new homeowner to explain what they're doing. BTW, bring a small welcoming token with you like baked goods or vegetables from your garden.

I'm wondering if anyone is in there though... Don't recall seeing a moving van or other activity until now. We're a really quiet neighborhood.
The previous owners (I never met them) had removed the dining room door, so it did feel more open. We're hoping to remove 5 feet of wall to open up the space. There are two doors right next to each other - one to the dining room and the other an open arch to the hall. Not even a foot apart. So if you want to go into the DR, you either have to open the door or go around the short half wall that divides the hall from the DR. I can't imagine anyone doing any sort of upgrade without addressing that particular issue. But it is also a load bearing wall, so some might not want to fuss with it.
I'll keep my eyes open and see if there's other activity and then swallow my social anxiety and say hello.
We did that exact same thing...My brother bought a house for my sister to rent...it was built in the 1960's...There was a house 2 doors down, same house but flip-flopped layout...They were gutting it and completely redoing everything...It was GORGEOUS...
We went over there a few times as the were doing the work...
My brother bought his house for $249K this redone house is on the market for $349.
My sister has some friends from her church interested in the remodeled house. And it has a pool.

Well I would certainly go over. However it sounds like this might be a "flip" could that be true? If so I would hesitate to ask just a workman, would want to speak to an owner.
Go for it!! What a great way to meet the new homeowners!!
