NitaLynns vignette reminded me to ask you all this question. Somehow I seem to be acquiring a collection of decanters. (nine so far)

Does anybody fill these with liquor? I just like the way they look but so far they are just that, something to look at. Mine are on a tea cart that is near windows in the d.r.

Nitalyn put colored water in hers. I don't know how she colored the water to look like spirits.

Hopefully she will share her recipe.

Emily - I have a number of decanters as well. Normally, I just leave them empty on display in my china cabinet or on top of my wine rack. I like the simple clear glass.

Strings - I just play with it, but basically I use 4-5 drops of yellow food color, maybe 3-4 of red, and one of blue. Add water until the right hue; scr*w up, dump it out, start over Wink

I've always read that you shouldn't store alcohol in lead crystal as it will leach lead from the crystal at unacceptable levels. It's okay to serve from a lead crystal decanter, just not to store alcohol in it.

That's luxurious! Don't know if any of these are lead crystal as they are either from the swap shop or a yard sale. Wow how did I go from none to nine in such a short time?

You can also use weak tea or coffee, but will have to deal with the stains later.
I used to buy a cheap wine and put in mine...not one anyone would drink, but they looked pretty anyway! ((big grin))

I also have a few decanters out in the garage in a box. When my kids were young I used to set up elaborate Halloween decorations at our front door for the trick-or-treaters. (I would set them up on the morning of Halloween, and take them down that night.) One year I made a life sized witch on a frame made from chicken wire etc. I dressed her with an old lady mask, green wig, and a long black dress, pointy hat and a kitchen apron. I set up a cauldron over a fake fire, and an old cupboard full of "ingredients" which were in the old dusty decanters. I remember that year I had lost the stopper for one of the decanters, and so substituted a rubber eyeball. Of course by the end of the night that had been stolen!

Anyway, one more use for decanters.
