As the kids get older our house is getting noisier! If I replaced their bedroom doors with solid wood would it block out noise better???

yes------I found that solid doors do help filter noise. I am actually thinking about doing that in my office if I can get the landlord to agree.

I also think listening to pleasing music through i-pod helps too!!! Big Grin

We're working on it. We have replaced all of the downstairs doors, and we will do the upstairs at some point in the near future. Our kids are grown, so noise isn't a factor, although it helps. But the sound and feel of hollow slab doors drives us crazy!

Yes, solid doors are fabulous.

But what has REALLY made the difference is insulating the walls between rooms. We did it when we were building the house, so it's probably impractical to do it to existing walls. But definitely...solid doors are a good thing for sound control.

Nope...we have the slab hollow-core that were originally stained. I've been attempting to paint them, which is a pain. I would love to replace them all with solid, but that's not priority right now. One thing I did do several years ago which I found helped with the sound was replacing the doornobs. Now I know that seems odd, but the flimsy knobs they put on those doors seemed to echo the hollowness of them.

As far as noise goes, I think insulation in the walls is the biggest factor in reducing it.

we changed out all our doors 4 years ago to solid and it helps more than I thought it would. its pretty quiet now with me being the only one here 90% of the time but I still like the solid doors. We also added the levor knobs, which I love the look of.

Our doors are raised panel solid wood. I had not really thought about it making a difference in the noise amount, but it surely must.

DITTO!!

I would start by only replacing the 2 bedroom doors so maybe it would not be too pricey ?

Our doors are solid and 100 years old. You can't here a thing even around corners with the doors open in our house.

**Maybe it's time to put that paintbrush away and use wallpaper!**

Solid core doors definitely help muffle sound. Having soft surfaces helps, too, like rugs or carpeting and drapes.
