the window in my home office is set in 12". It looks so ideal for a window seat, yet 12" really isn't deep enough for a seat.

does anyone know the standard depth for a window seat? Can a window seat extend beyond the walls and still look right?

if anyone has any pictures of window seats extending beyond the wall, post them!

I've made them as narrow as 10" for clients. I say go for it.

Not sure that this is what you're wanting, but these extend beyond the window itself.

The last pic is interesting because it was a diy project using stock kitchen cabs. The seat itself was made with over the fridge cabs set side by side! Here's the link:

I was going to suggest something, and was trying to figure out how to describe it. But now I don't have to, because it id Lens' picture #3! If you look closely, the window is in a shallow bump out bay. the cabinets/shelves are shallow as well. I've seen this done IRL, and it looks great! Perfect for a home office, IMO!

thanks everyone for all the pictures and suggestions! They are all helpful!

Bookcases would be so ideal in this room since it is a home office, but on one side of the window the wall is needed for clearance for the closet door Frown
would probably look lopsided with a bookcase on only one side.

We had this built -- it is about the depth of a kitchen cabinet. It's great for sitting and watching the rain falling on the garden.
