What have you never owned or decorated with? Some by choice, some perhaps because of the house you live or lived in.

We've had lots of "what's in" and "what's out" and "what we should never do" lists.

In our life, we have never:

1 - owned a recliner

2 - owned a riding lawn mower (and yes, we have had houses with lawns and had to mow them!)

3 - owned bar stools

Let's see what your "nevers" are!

That's a really broad category, Martha! I find it really hard to answer the way you've stated it, but I can answer to things I've never "had" that I hope to have in my next house.

1 - large, lush, architectural moldings
2 - high ceilings
3 - enough wall space for more art
4 - a huge front porch

but back to your question, which is more about trends skipped I guess...hmmm...well, I never did the Southwestern trend...no mauves...I can't come up with anything else! We've never owned a riding mower, but that's more of a situational thing rather than a trendy thing; otherwise, I've probably done a little bit of every trend that's come along Smile

Gosh, I just counted and I'm on my eleventh home, so it's going to take a little thought to come up with a "never."

1- We've never owned a stackable washer/dryer.

2- We've never had a pool.

3- We've never owned a condo.

4- We've never had a sectional sofa ...but now that I think about it, we probably should have!

OK, well geez, some people's minds just work better than mine...I've never had MOST of all those things listed by Froo and Annett!

ETA: Out of Froo's list, the things I HAVE had are:
screened porch
chaise
grandfather clock
pocket doors
pool table
large enough master closet
propane grill
tiered deck
box window (meaning bay window?)
french doors
window seat
gas fireplace
refrigerator with ice and water

I guess that's more than I thought...out of Annett's list, the only thing I have had is a sectional sofa.

I've never had a yard smaller than 1/2 acre...until soon.

I've never had a pool till soon.
I've never had a greenhouse but I will soon!

I've never had a dog since becoming an adult and owning a house. Would love one, but my cat rules and the yard at the new house won't accommodate anything larger than a mini yorkie as far as poops go in grass.

I've never had such an aching to get moved into a new home as much as I do in TX!

I've never decorated in a modern style.
I've never owned a sectional
I've never had window treatments apart from blinds...until this house.
I've never had wallpaper in any house.
I've never had a round dining table.
I've never had the balls to step out of my traditional decorating style....not that I ever wanted to! Smile

I've lived in 19 houses since getting married and have had/do have many of the things already listed. However there are many things I've not had some of which I'd like and some not. I can only list what I'd like that I have never had tho or the list would go on forevah!

I'd like to have:
~a large screened 4 season porch
~a hot tub in the 4 season porch
~a pond in my garden and a dry stream bed
~a reproduction old house
~kitchen pantry room
~raised dishwasher
~solar or wind power system
~full time staff (housekeeper, cook, gardener)

I'm sure there is more but that's what immediately comes to mind.

Froo Froo, your lists are just too funny! Alien abductions! LOL!

Well my list is more of the things I never wanted to have, either because it's too much maintenance or I just dislike them.

Recliners
Swimming Pool
Heated floors...duh, I've always lived in the South
Hot Tub
Cellar...another Southern issue. If we had cellars in coastal Louisiana they would be filled with mud. hehe
Vessel sinks
Water Bed
Mid Century Modern or Contemporary furniture or accessories
Pastel Colors on the walls

It's funny, I have or had most of the other items on the previous posts in one house or another. Also 5 of the "thank goodness list of nevers" on Froo Froo's.

I'll make two lists. Never had because never wanted. And never had but have wanted.

Never had a/c didn't want.

air conditioning

wall to wall carpeting

a new house (unless of course custom designed by me)

pot lights

open concept space

lack of outdoor space

living in a development

abstract art

black furnishings or appliances

stove pot filler water faucet

I'm sure there is more but now will list wants:

a gas stove

a conservatory

a dish pantry

a separate large studio for DH's art (Chesterwood in Mass would be a good example)

a glass sort of something on the south part of house to sit in on sunny winter days.

heated floors would be wonderful in Maine!

a complete second bath (instead of a toilet in a closet space with sink outside of that)

a third complete bath.

a laundry chute

los,
I laughed when I read 'laundry chute' on your list!

When I lived in a Victorian with 3 floors and all bedrooms upstairs, I used to start on the third floor, and throw down the clothes in the stair well! Then I would go to the second floor getting all linens and hampers from the kids rooms and mine and throw those down. I had two stair wells to the 2nd floor, so I would throw them down both sets.

If the kids came home early from after school and saw this they called it 'the front and back laundry chutes'! So I guess I had two! LOL

Some are likes I would have loved to have while others are nevers that should remain nevers. Some speak for themselves. I can safely say, I would love a beveled glass entry door or a Wolfe oven or a gazebo (preferably part of a deck or porch design). I will refrain from stating the never, never items as they may offend some who find them an amenity.

I forgot my most wanted but never had:

an outdoor shower. I have wanted one for the past 60 years! (since I first discovered them at the beach in N.J.)

DH could set one up and we even have the hot/cold water right inside the logical space but that is where my clothesline is and in Maine we don't need one for that long.

Agree with about 1/2 of Cavins list. The colors he doesn't like I definitely wear. Have had and love lace curtains. also wake up a happy girl in my pink bedroom with pale blue ceiling!

No vertical blinds, wall words, accent walls, recliners, sectional sofa. First sofa I ever bought was a red sleeper sofa. A necessity in tiny N.Y. city apts.

I hated the '70's and loved the 80s but not because of the styles.

Well, this just goes to show, once again, that each and every one of us is DIFFERENT, and while there are some basic tenets of design that many people find to be pleasing, they can be interpreted to each individual's tastes. As has been said before, what a boring place the world would be if everyone was the same.

this makes me think of one of my favorite stories about my DGS. He was about two and we were in the Met Mus of Art. standing looking into the Venetian bedroom which is replete with many putti (cherub or child) up and around the ceiling.

Here are some of mine at Christmas time one year!

DGS looked at them and said "Dem's muvvers wants dems to come down!"

Personally I love them.

Makes me think that if one of my sisters were making this list incl in her "nevers" would be any depiction of an animal in figure or sculpture form!

Funny story, Lady of Shallot! Big Grin

I don't mind cherubs so awful much, in fact I painted one on the wall behind the door of our half bath/guest bath. He is smoking a big stogie as he floats on a cloud. It often elicits chuckles when folks wash their hands and look in the mirror.

However I could never stand Precious Moments...anything. None ever stayed in my house a nanosecond. They looked to me like spawn of ET, and not of the good gene pool. Wink

My cherubs are simply white plaster. One has a lamb on it's lap as the cherub plays a horn. It is the focal point in the center of a mixed greenery, white magnolias of great quality, gold berries, white and gold ribbon ledge garden. A big brass French horn frames the angelic figure. I made this piece years ago when I was head of floral in a major craft chain. I initially created it to sell, but the store positioned it on a high shelf in their window therefore it was basically out of sight. This worked to my benefit as it turned out. The day I left my job, I purchased my beloved piece at a rock bottom price since Christmas had passed. BTW, white lights are nestled among the greenery. My other smaller cherubs typically are part of my lv. rm. mantlescape or dining room tablescape. They too are white plaster. One holds a cornucopia type vase and I filled it with a bouquet of stemmed pedals. Another sits with chubby legs dangling, ankles crossed, holding a bird on it's outstretched palm. Another lays on it's tummy with hands supporting it's head as if to contemplate whatever it is gazing upon. I also acquired, from the same craft store, reproduction prints of famous cherub compositions. They are often incorporated into the mantlescape or placed on a floor easel or on a wall in my dining room. I would safely say I have a collection of cherubs. The fact they are all white keeps their presence understated and elegant.

Oh, gosh is that ever cute Lady of shallot!

And your list of "thank goodness nevers", FrooFroo, had me laughing!

It is so interesting to read everyones lists of nevers!

My list contains things I have never had, but am now kinda thinking I might like someday.

1. A patio. I think patios are so graceful and beautiful, but I have always had a deck. I am getting tired of deck upkeep.

2. A pool. I never wanted a pool when my kids were young as I saw them as a safety risk. Now that my kids are grown, and my knees bother me sometimes which interferes with my exercise, I think it would be heavenly to swim laps in my own pool.

3. A skylight above my bed. When my parents built their lake house they installed a skylight above their bed so that they could snuggle in bed at night and look at the stars. When I was young I thought that was weird, but now I see it as sweet and romantic, and I think I would love it.

I should have finished the 'not figurine' statement with figures or sculpture, I was commenting that I was similar to your sister with the exception that I do like the Straffordshire dogs. And I do not like people shaped figurines either (that is the long story thing). NO DOLLS either...! LOL

And because of Charles D's reply, I would add ME TOO do NOT want...
truck tire planters
toilet seat covers
Nor FLAME STITCH and so 'over' the Chevron thing....

I DO LIKE:
the sound of walking on the Oyster shell pathways! We had some friends in Virginia who had them!
