This week it happened that we visited the homes of two friends on back to back days. Since DH was with me at the first house where I usually go alone, he was commenting on different things. . . the oil paintings of his she owns, the pieces of sculpture, one of which he repaired for her. The scratches on her mothers oak table.
Next day we went to other friends and the wife wanted to show me a project upstairs. I remembered the bed skirt she and I spent hours "de-quilting" and admired a picture she told me I had given her. Downstairs there is a bust of the husband DH did back in the days when we used to play trivia and he hated that so sculpted instead.
Both of these are friends of 40 years or so but we still are learning new things about each other and appreciating our differences. Both of these families were living in other homes when we met them, still there is a continuity in their furnishings and in our friendships that is deeply enriching and comforting.
It is really wonderful to see the impact we have in their homes and they in ours.
I know what you mean LOS.I see lots of electrical things that my DH did for friends over the years.Ceiling fans,sconces,outside lights,etc.that he installed.

There will always be new things to learn about people, even those one has known a long time, because we all change in various ways over time.
I find some of my long-time friends are very willing to learn new things and are making amazing changes in their lives. Requires real courage often - perhaps it's true that 70 is the new 50 altho that sounds trite! Most of us are quite healthy and active so feel we can do many things that 'older people' didn't used to.
Recently one of my oldest friends told me how she is using something I gave her years ago and I'm glad she's still enjoying it. I have some friends I've known all my life (70 years) and others I've 'only' known for 50 years!

I have two old friends for 37 years and they have been so supportive since my husband passed away. They call me regularly. I know they are there if I need them. My Mother used to say if you make only one good friend in your lifetime, you are truly blessed. Now I know that is very true!
My long time friends(5)of over 40 year are one of my greatest joys in my life. I know them and their homes inside and out and vice versa as well. I can count on them for anything and they and their families know I will always be there for them as well.

I love that you can see yourself in your friends' homes. I just keep some things in sight especially if they are children. Art, little ceramic things they paint, etc.
Much of what we have is from someone else, so it's all out and they can see themselves. I'm glad they all have good taste so that it all works together!!!
I don't see myself in their homes. So, either I buy/make/give terrible things or have bad taste or ... whatever.
I DO see myself in some of my relatives homes.
My aunt has a ceramic that I made 45 years ago in school. Not sure how she ended up with it! Ha! But, it's there and I like seeing it. And she treasures it.
