I posted this a few weeks ago in "whats hot, whats not" and didn't get any res[onse at all~I am hoping the enthusiastic decorating mavens her will be able to help me??

A few years ago everyone on the boards was excited about "Village Workroom" for semi custom and custom draperies and other window treatments. I haven't heard anything recently and am wondering if the reputation of the company is still just as good.

I am really trying to make this along with my kitchen a beautiful, welcoming, and relaxing space. Not stuffy but still somewhat elegant if that makes any sense.

So if anyone has used them recently or know someone who has....please post a comment to help me decide.
!
Thanks so much

Never heard of them. Where are they located? There are tons of workrooms all over the country that are really good.

Near Doylestown, PA. I learned about them through this board, but have never ordered from them before. However now I am thinking of of ordering dining room drapes.

www.villageworkroom.com

Thanks~Hopefully someone who has purchased from them before will see this!

I looked at their gallery of photos. Based on that I felt like none of their panels hung correctly. Why are every pair long and pooled? The top areas are all clipped. If I was going to pay for custom drapery panels I or any window treatment I would use a local work room to do the work. One that would come out measure and install. I would not use a workroom over the internet. especially since it looks like you would not be saving money by doing so. Do you have any non big box fabric decor places you can go to? They usually have a work room they use.

NCKD~ Thanks so much for your thoughts and advice. I live near Princeton NJ; and prices are very high at custom placrs in this area. I actually thought they(VWR)were rather reasonable compared to other internet workroom sites. A few years ago I had two single width rodpocket top panels made for my living room in a cream yellow and red toile. They were over $800.00!

With Village Workroom;I was planning on getting inverted or french pleats and not puddle them. IMHO puddling is a big dust catcher.I am doing my dining room and kitchen (open floor plan) in saybrook sage from BM, and was thinking of a gold panel edged with a border of a burgundy color. My living room which is also open to these rooms is Philadelphia Cream~also BM with the same color scheme of greens, beige and golds, with hints of reds.

I will look further in my area but am still hoping someone out there may have used Village Work Room before. If there were somewhere reasonable around here~I would definatly use them!

JM have you considered a private seamstress? A place to start your search is Craigs list. But an even better place is word of mouth. Ask around. I know in my immediate neighborhood their are 4 woman who do home based businesses sewing home decor. They all do great work. Two of them I would use for draperies and panels because they have the proper cutting tables set up. The other two I would use for pillows, cushions etc (simply because they don't have the long cutting tables I feel are required to make a proper panel). Just something to consider. AT this work room you are considering can you send them your own fabrics? Or do they simply only use what they have? I put info in for 96" long width and a half panel and it was $330. Am I missing something? Just curious for my own sake. To give you an idea I paid $770 for my family room panels which are 96" long and workable (not dummy panels) so they close across a 96" wide set of windows. They are knife pleated. But the fabric sold for $84 a yard and I got her down to $54 a yard because I was ordering the rods through her. My point is don't be afraid to negotiate with these places. Especially if you are also getting the fabric through them! Good luck and make sure you post pictures once you get all those window treatments up!

i purchased beautiful panels at jcp, they were 50%off, then i had a 20% off coupon. got them for $37. they are lined w flannel interlining and cotton lining. they are not real silk, but you wouldn't know it. they were 120 inches but i needed 139 inches so i added fabric to the bottom. 4 drapes cost me about $300. rather than the $1500-1800 i was quoted. if you can sew a straight line you could do it or someone you know could. it wasn't that hard and i saved so much $

Unfortunatley I actually can't sew! REALLY Smile
But I have thought about taking them to our local seamstress, figuring it would be appx $20.00/panel.
But, when I called VWR for a quote for double with, in one main color with an edging band; interlined and cotton lined in dupioni, it was about $560.00 for the job. I checked that against Restoration Hardware, Pottery Barn, etc and VWR were cheaper. I am just hoping the quality is up to what everyone had talked about a wile ago.
Thanks for answering though, I appreciate it!

Me again...
KD; I hadn't seen your post.
VWR sends you swatches of their silks, and linens, sort of like Country Curtains or Ballards does. If you want any sort of fringe ~you need to purchasr that and send it to them. I don't understand what you meant by are you missing something? Did the price seem off to you?
There are two places around me. One is a store~Calico Corners. I used them for Toile stationary panels a couple of years ago. They were VERY expensive and it took 8 weeks! The other, is a woman and her husband who work out of their home. They are also very expensive and try to get everyone to buy more than they want. They have a reputation for the tough sell.
I never thought getting the draperies would be the hardest part of this project!!! I'm having trouble deciding on a color so for now I haven't ordered anything anyway yet!
Thanks again ladies.

Jerseymom82,
Drive down to Philadelphia and go to fabric row. My daughter took me there when she was looking for her new home-WOW. Tons of stores that sell nothing but fabric and one store I went into that had nothing but trim/fringe. She found a great guy in one of the stores that made her drapes-her fabric came from one of the other stores and then he custom made them, and came out to install. They were perfect and the prices were incredible with excellent workmanship. I can't give you specific directions except that it's just over the Ben Franklin Bridge and is in the historic district. You cant be more than 1/12-2 hrs away-try it!

Mammaspoon~
Actually my son lives in Center City and we have been to Fabric Row before. I truly hadn't thought of them in terms of actually doing the work though. I love going in and playing with and buying buttons and trim for craft projects and scrapbooking.
My favorite part of that area is the Italian Market area. We have gone to several shops and restaurants there; and my son always gets us the best fresh pasta, Italian sausage and cheeses there! In fact, for my recent b-day they bought me a gift certificate to "Fantes"~the kitchen store to buy doodads for the new kitchen Smile
Thsnks for the tip!

What I meant was are they really that much cheaper? The quote I got when I put my info in was only $100 less total than what I paid for mine and mine are workable panels that span a 96" wide expanse of windows plus using a very pricey fabric. I guess that I was expecting a large savings by using them. I guess I got a better deal than I thought on mine! Big Grin

I understand now...I'm just so tired today things are going right over my head. Confused
I did end up ordering from them this afternoon so wish me luck everyone!
I got dupioni silk, sand colored for the body with a 3 1/2" band in ruby to run the length of the panels. They will be double width plus an extra 10" because it is a slding "french" door. And 90" in length. Ivory cotton outer lining with the flannel interlining. Flair pleats with pins already in. The total came to $600.00 for the pair. I compared that against Restoration Hardware and ONE panel is just about that much.
They were very nice and helpful. I sent them pics of my space so they could see the room, paint color, furniture style, etc. And they spent alot of time helping me figure things out.
SO....hopefully all will work out and I'll have my panels up by Thanksgiving. Fingers crossed.

You might also ask your local tailor for references. Mine will do simple window treatments, and pillow covers, but some will do or know someone who will do more elaborate wts.

Robbiesmom - you got a GREAT deal on those panels. I contacted JCP once about custom treatments for a valance and the estimate was $150 per window.

ETA - ok, so I am guilty of not reading all of the posts until after I add mine. Of course, now I see that you already ordered them, so ... never m
