I posted this on the Cleaning board but I don't think there's much traffic over there. I hope it's ok to post this here.

A friend is moving into a new-to-her house. The house was built in the 1930's and has a basement the family plans to remodel for use as a family room. That will not happen immediately, however, and in this meantime, they do want to use the space as their kids' play area.

The basement reportedly smells like a cat's litter box, with a faint floral undertone. (How's that for a combination?)

She tells me they have used an enzyme cleaner recommended for pet smells but that she can't say it's made much of a difference. Maybe it hasn't fully dried yet.

Any suggestions?

Thank you!

shes used a dehumidified, to no avail. I hope someone comes along with the perfect answer as I think many have this problem.

Sounds like the smell is in the concrete. The only way to eliminate it for good is to seal the concrete. It's a drastic measure, but it works!

Does the space have carpet? If so, the smell may be embedded into the carpet and the only way to get the smell out may be to rip the carpet up.

If it's not carpeted and it's just he concrete walls, try scrubbing them down with bleach and hot water and pull lots of bleach water down any open drains as well.

I would use a dehumidifier, wash the basement down with bleach and water, then put boxes of charcoal and maybe CLEAN kitty litter.

Last resort, paint concrete with something like Kilz.

Love,
Lu

This is just a thought, but if she has alot of stuff packed in cardboard boxes in her basement, once the cardboard gets damp..and it will in the basement,it will give off a sewery smell. I have found this to be true in my own basement.
