Hi everyone. . .I apologize for disappearing a while back. The house I thought we were going to get fell through and then we got sucked into the move from FL to TX.

BUT. . we are HERE and waiting to close on our house finally and this one is even better and has the charm we wanted!

Anyway...please help me with my vision. I have the hardest time picturing things. I love a good mix of modern and vintage things. I love the softness and rustic feel you can achieve with vintage pieces and the sleekness from some of the modern pieces. I am a sale shopper though. . i don't buy anything new. . I'm addicted to craigslist, garage sales etc. LOL SO when I find something I gotta grab it before it goes! I found this table on craigslist and I need to know if you think this will work in a vintage environment or if this is "too" modern. This is a link to the stock photo. .i would be purchasing the table and two of the upholstered chairs...the other four chairs would not be upholstered and would be wood criss/cross chairs.

I would LOVE opinions please. Thank you so much! I never considered a glass top table but just fell in love with this one along with the price! I am hoping the wood base of the table will help to soften the sleekness of the glass. We also will have a more vintage style chandelier hanging above it. We're going to spray paint the one we have an antiqued white and it has grayish/blue lamp shades (probably 10 or so of them,...the little mini ones).

What do the chairs look like? I think you could make it work, but it is pretty modern. Sometimes it is easy to get caught up in a bargain. If this table is what you had envisioned, then by all means buy it. If the price is what has you tempted, I would give it some extra thought.

Well, that's the problem. I don't have a specific table in mind. . .my brain is swirling around all these different ideas that i like and I can't seem to land on one. I had NEVER considered a glass table, but for some reason this one just really struck me.

The chairs would be 2 of the ones in the picture I attached in my first post and then the other 4 are smaller wood "ladder" chairs. NOt as informal as kitchen table chairs, but you know what I mean. I don't have a pic of those that I can attach.

So you think it wouldn't look good??

No, I actually do like the table. What else will you put in the room or have you gotten that far yet? I know how it can be when you are trying to envision something you haven't seen yet. I find mixing styles works best when they are the same degree of formality and it sounds like the side chairs will be.

Unfortunately that table sold already!!! I didn't act fast enough. Oh well, it wasn't meant to be!

I got on etsy.com last night and found some tables I really like. I think I need to just spend some time looking at rooms and really narrow in on what specifically I like best. Right now I Feel like I have a million different concepts floating around my head and it is making it difficult to put it all together!

I want the dining room to be formal, but still have that romantic, vintage feel. It seems if I focus too much on the vintage side it ends up not being formal enough and if i focus on the formal side it ends up "too" formal. . LOL!! I just want a soft, vintage with some modern accents, romantic dining room. Same for my living room. Hoping I'll get it all straight in my head soon! We close on the house July 25th, so I have about a month to figure it all out, cause once we're in that house I want to put it together pretty quickly. . I am not one to put off making the house pretty. HA!

My two cents: Are you purchasing the table from the blogger you posted? If so, offer much less than what she is asking. Usually, when buying a used item, no matter how "new," a realistic price would be no more than 50 percent of the original price. Items like this don't appreciate in value; they depreciate.

If I were you, I'd hold off making any purchases right now until you have settled into your new home (Congratulations are in order.)

I know how exciting it is to move into a new home, but you may want to take a few deep breaths. You'll want to live in the house for awhile before developing a design scheme. Study how the light changes and how your routines or habits change based on the new configuration of space. Study the interior architecture carefully to note its limitations and strengths. All these things will influence your design vision.

I really like the table and think you could make it work. You see contemporary spaces with farm tables so why wouldn't a contemporary table work with modern/vintage. If you look to the left of the pic, you can see a console that looks modern/vintage with the set.

Wanted to ask you also, do you have the measurements for each room? That is very important. I know a couple of people who have small diningrooms but huge dining sets and it looks goofy. They made the mistake of not measuring the room and furniture for the right fit.

For the larger purchases, I think I'd wait until I got into the house. Then you can take pics and I'm sure you will get lots of help putting it together.

If you really have a hard time visualizing, and are unsure of how the pull together the correct balance of contemporary/traditional to get the look you want, you might consider professional help.

Depending on how much furniture you need, many stores offer free design services to their customers.

Sometimes it can be a good idea to wait until you need to make more than one purchase, and go shopping around to see if you "click" with a sales associate or a design consultant at a shop you like.

Excellent advice from Charles D. This is exactly what my sister did when it was time to refresh and redecorate her home.

She went to Ethan Allen and found a very simpatico design consultant who not only helped her with paint schemes, window treatments and furniture purchases, but also how to incorporate existing pieces and art work she already had to create a budget-friendly, but cohesive look.

My sister was not looking to have a home decorated out of the box. But, she was stuck on how to create a scheme that would complement her charming mid-century home with its many original architectural details, but that was more contemporary than modern.

I know this is an exciting time for you but please don't rush into anything until after you've closed on the house. It will save moving furniture twice and there will always be *lots* of furniture in all the places you like to shop and the right thing will be available. You are a 'flexible' shopper as you love many things so there is no danger of not finding something that will work very well.

When planning what styles may work in your rooms start with what you have such as the vintage style chandelier. Do you have other pieces you want in this room? Perhaps take pics of what you have, print them out, and mount them on a board or place in a small album to take with you as you shop. You will then have a better understanding of how the pieces will look together. Decorating is a learning experience and the more you open your eyes to the possibilities the better you will get at it. Of course if you are totally overwhelmed by the experience it may be worth it to you to get help. Keep in mind tho that many sales associates or design consultants at stores are not necessarily qualified decorators and usually like to sell everything for the room from their store (often they work on commission). This is unlikely to be what a shopper such as yourself wants so falls under 'buyer beware'.

In regards to pics of what we have now. . .we have nothing. LOL We sold everything we own when we moved here and are staying with our parents while we close on the home. . .so it's a fresh start with a fresh idea!!

We have decided to wait until we get into the home to decide what we want.

And yes, we have measurements of every inch of that house....we're re-doing the flooring too, so we needed them anyway for that.

NO, I was not going to purchase it from that blogger, it was just the best picture I could find of the set.

I will be sure to keep you updated! We went into a super neat furniture store the other day and they offer free design services, so I may take them up on that offer!!!

On another note, I have 100% decided that I want a bird cage chandelier in our entry way and instead of buying one we're going to make our own. . .so I am off today to find a cheap old bird cage and a pretty crystal chandelier to go inside of it. I am SUPER excited about this project!!!

I'm glad to see Vic Girl has responded to your post. IMHO no one on this site does a better job of decorating in the exact same style (or rather resources) that you want to use. Check out her pics.
