    Hi all,
    I haven't been around in a while.

I have a question, we are painting our foyer, it is a double story foyer but I typically use to Satin paint but I was thinking that I might want to use Flat...

What would you decorators recommend? I always use SW paint so if you have a recommendation (superpaint versus cashmere) I love that too.

    Thanks!

I've no experience with SW paint, but recommend staying away from flat paint for walls. It shows every scuff and fingerprint, etc. Cleaning it is pretty much impossible, you usually resort to having to touch-up paint. Frown The house we're renting now had freshly done flat paint, and within 2 months, we ended up doing touch-up paint all over. We finally broke down and painted almost every room in house (in color, and not flat!).

2 story means that the dry wall probably has more bumps and wavies than 1 story. Big walls usually have big issues. You'd want to use a good quality matte paint as mentioned in the other thread.

Satin will up the chances of every imperfection showing - especially at the level where illumination from the ceiling fixtures is most concentrated.

Well, I have a different opinion. Although I guess I would have to agree with the maintenance issues of flat paint, I much prefer its look. The previous poster who said that satin would show up every wall imperfection was right on. It also just looks too "shiny" to me. Our house has always been flat, but our baths have always been wallpapered. I just stripped a bath and painted it last weekend (meaning I painted it last weekend; I first started stripping in March...); anyway, I was told at the paint store to use satin in a bath because of moisture, so I did, and DH and I both HATED it! Tuesday morning I got up at 5:00 a.m. and we re-painted it together before I went to work! This is a guest bath that doesn't get much use, so I hope the finish will hold up. I also changed the color to the next lighter one on the strip, and with both changes it looks MUCH better!

A primary consideration, however, would be what the rest of your house is. I really think you should stay consistent with whatever you have.

    Thanks!

The rest of the house is in satin but I really wanted a more matte finish for the foyer area.

Miz S, you should try the Durations matte finish...very scrubbable and in-between flat and satin.

Just be sure to use the paint directly being shaken from the store because it tends to settle and you'll need to really stir it before using it. Other than that, it's good for even kitchen applications.

I've also used the Cashmere matte and love its soft velvety look but it is not as scrubbable.

All my paint was purchased from BM Store and I was told the same thing about painting the bathroom with a Satin Finish so that's what we did! What did you hate about the Satin Finish and what finish did you replace your bathroom wall color with?

Ronda, it's probably just because we don't have satin anywhere else in the house, so it just stood out like a sore thumb. I'm sure if a house is all satin it would be fine. We textured it ourselves (after lots of observation, research, and practice) but it still didn't look "perfect" and the satin just made the texture "glare." We re-did it in flat and like it much better, but that's just us. I haven't tried any of the new "in-between" finishes.

My ceilings are flat, walls are egg shell and trim semi-gloss.
