We need to hang a very heavy piece - it will need a big wall anchor - do I make a template out of paper bags and tape it to the wall for position first?

Any suggestions? How long do you leave the placeholder up? Live with it for a day? week?

I tend to be fickle with moving wall art around, so I want to be sure with this.

Leave the placeholder up until you are sure about placement. If it takes a week that is OK. And then be sure to hang a heavy piece with a french cleat and be sure the wall part is screwed into the studs.

I never consider anything permanent-permanent when it comes to wall decor...you can always patch a hole, even a big one. That said, of course it will be less hassle if you can get it right the first time, so I think your template idea is a good one. I am very picky about how all the wall decor balances around the room, so I take careful measurements and try to align everything the way I want it to balance. Even so, I sometimes make mistakes, and my DH has just had to learn to live with my "pound, pound, pound" every time I hang something Wink

I use a cleat to hang heavy wall items, this way it never shifts or goes off-level with vibrations.
