I live in a new construction townhouse and would like to raise my first floor ceilings from 8 ft to 9 ft. Is it possible to do so without touching the roof. My hallway ceiling going to the second floor is 13 ft tall. I hoping their is some space between the two floors to do such a big project.

JC, Highly unlikely. Some townhomes are built with floor trusses which can be quite deep but they can't be modified to raise the ceiling height. Also even when you're building raising the ceiling on a two story house is not as simple as using longer studs in the walls. It throws off the stair design and you may not be able to get the longer run required for the higher ceiling height. Welcome to the boards. General Disclaimer Any advice given here is general in nature and is not necessarily valid for your given area. If in doubt check with your local codes enforcement department for what is required when doing electrical, plumbing or structural work on your house. Permits may or may not be required in your area and home owners may not be able to DIY some tasks. I have no way of knowing if you have the skills needed to complete the tasks you are asking about, when in doubt seek professional assistance. My advice may be worth exactly what you pay me for it. :-) For the record I did not stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.
