Having watched Holmes over the years I'd say in most cases the "contractor" was in over his head. He low-balled the bid and didn't have enough money or skills to do the job right. Probably the toughest thing for someone going into business in this industry is to figure out what to charge to win the business without losing his a-- in the process.

Some of the work I've seen by people Holmes has cleaned up after is truly wood butchery. These are guys who don't have a clue how to do the work right. That said, there are good contractors out there besides Mike Holmes.

Also, Mike doesn't read or post on this board. If you want to contact Mike go to his website. here: http://holmesmakesitright.com/connect

General Disclaimer

Any advice given here is general in nature and is not necessarily valid for your given area. If in doubt check with your local codes enforcement department for what is required when doing electrical, plumbing or structural work on your house. Permits may or may not be required in your area and home owners may not be able to DIY some tasks. I have no way of knowing if you have the skills needed to complete the tasks you are asking about, when in doubt seek professional assistance.

My advice may be worth exactly what you pay me for it. :-) For the record I did not stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.
