Greetings, What type of design challenges would you like to see on the next Design Star?

I would like to see more individual challenges. I'd also like to see the contestants individually design the same type of room, with a decent budget and a specific design theme. For example, traditional or french country or spanish or contemporary. I'd also like to see designs that actually test the contestant's knowledge of design, color, etc. I don't think we get to see the individual talent with too many group projects, so I suggest more solo projects.

Oh good, I was looking for this topic. I would like to see the contestants design a large facility, like an ALF, or a group home of some kind. And maybe each one could be assigned a different room. I would also like to see them design similar rooms, with a larger budget. And I agree about the need of more individual challenges too.

I thought they would be nearly done by now. but I guess if they had to decide on those last two people, then I guess not.

I agree. I would also like to see more individual challenges. I feel like we don't get to see the person's true talent in a group design. I would rather see great design talent, that some quirky personality. There are plenty of those on the other networks.

I am not sure how to get what I want. How to suggest a challenge.
This is how I see it.
I would like the winner to be able to do more than one style of decorating. In other words somthing besides modern something besides manly stuff. I would like to see a designer sometime do classic cottage, victorian formal and informal, french chic would be okay or cottage chic as long as it did not look so modern.

Like when Kim said she was doing cottage chic, I thought oh boy goodie. and then she had those chairs in the modern shape........... She threw out the best stuff out of the room that I would love to see them use. Those syles never go out.I would like to see the styles done in the magazines sections at check out. 'Country almanac' for one. Romantic Homes and romantic something else. Can they do Old world style.?
If the designer can select people who want variety and do variety I would vote for them.

I am not sure how the challenge could be designed to give us this.
I did see several people asking for this type. Using some traditional pieces. Antiques they said. repurpose.vintage pieces, collections shown.
    Not always miminal.

Can they use florals and checks, some plaids the right kind of stripes. The old traditional styles in a modern enough way that does not distort the classic styles.

Then there are clever comfortable contempory I look for black and white creativity. When I see something good done in it, I know if they are good.

I would like to see the contestants work on something like a National Park cabin, making it "naturally" beautiful, comfortable, and totally "Green." This would be a service to our National Park System by generating interest, and it would also educate viewers about "Green" products and lifestyles.

I would like to see the show originate from New Orleans. Give each contestant a Habit for Humanity house. Each contestant could meet with the family who will occupy the home. The style could then be selected. Each week, the designer could to a different room. When the projects were completed, the viewers could select the best overall design. HGT could pay off the mortgage for the home that was decorated by the DS winner.

Delysia, that has to be one of the best ideas I've ever seen.

The show is probably already in production if not even completely filmed. That idea though is sadly timeless - there are probably ALWAYS going to be areas where floods, tornadoes etc have struck and massive rebuilding is needed.

I do hope someone takes note of your idea.

I agree with Delysia. I want to see the emphasis on real life design, not using stuff from a pet store or cosmetics store.

Maybe they should do something really crazy like draft a floorplan, elevation, section or even a reflective ceiling plan in scale. This way we could see their design ideas before they do them and see some real life design skills. Much like Candice does on her show. I love it when Candice shows her design ideas on paper first.

Great idea Delysia. Also, the house and interior design should combine green and universal design. We need to save $, the planet, and make houses accessible to all (think of returning soldiers, aging boomers, young skiers who break a leg, anyone with a friend who uses a cane, walker or wheelchair).

I have to echo the idea of having a different design style placed in the paint cans, then each contestant pulls out a different style to design. This will seperate the pros from the Kims.
