I think the "safe" designers were spot on. I think, like the first challenge, Danielle should have been the winner- though with the talent they have this year, being second twice in a row is still good. And I don't know why Stanley gets away with sloppy work. Yes- his arrangement and use of light was inventive, but the presentation was messy (wires showing, for example)- yet not a single judge said anything about it. In fact, they seemed to act as if there was nothing wrong with his room (that it was just his camera challenge lacking) As for the bottom three.... I wish Luka had gone home. He's annoying and his use of accessories was, as Vern said... Horrendous! Hilari's paint color choice was awful, but she had enough good things to keep her there. What did you think? Did the judges get it right?
Oh... and for the record- in another thread I predicted (based on the preview) that the challenge would include shopping in a hardware/home improvement store. I also predicted that Vern's "horrendous" comment clip would not be about either the light room or the sickly green room with embellished pillows. (which turned out to be Stanley's and Hilari's rooms) So... that's two points for me!
I don't get the judges' fascination with Stanley's installation 'art' . He seems like another Antonio to me...way out there just for the sake of shock value. Both of his rooms so far were totally worthless as a living space. It was easy to see that Jordan was going home...they didn't even take the time to show his screen test. I guess he didn't get the clue from David that he needed to do something more than just add furniture. Painting it just wasn't enough. All of the ladies did a nice job except for the metal chain on the sofa that Gen seemed to like.
Jordan's wasn't any worse than the other bottom two or three; "too safe" most likely, sorry he's leaving; good luck to all for next week.
I agree about Stanley, his room was messy. I picked Rachel's room as the winner when they were doing the walkthrough. The only thing they didn't like were the owls, did someone forget to tell them they were shopping in a hardware store? It could have been a tie with Danielle, they liked everything but her lamp. I just hope we're not going to see Stanley saved everyweek because he's "creative", I think that is how we ended up with Meg last year. I believe that TPTB decided early on that they wanted Meg to win, I hope they haven't decided who the winner is already. I do think Jordan should have gone home, at least the others had ideas, even if they didn't execute them very well.
I just looked at the pictures posted on the blog. One side of Rachel's room is plants in pots on top of the two cabinets, they sure didn't show much of that during the reveal. It really looks bad, doesn't go with the rest of the room, she should not have won. Danielle should have gotten the prize tonight. The more I look at it the more I like Mikel's room, I like his use of hardware store items, I think Gen was wrong, it is more than just a room with a couch. This message has been edited. The only challenge last night was who was worst...and, IMO, there were more than three in contention. Luka, Hilari, Jordan, for sure, but Stanley is right there and so are Mikel and Miera. I'm not all that impressed with the huge graphics theme going on...they work on magazine pages, but who would want them in their home? I know, it's all about making a statement for effect but really, would YOU want what Danielle did in your home? Not I. Rachel's was a bit more sedate but still not my cup of tea...loved her art piece, though. **Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning to dance in the rain**

On David's video wrap up, he said that Stanley's design was his favorite. Ok, I'm no designer, but.... WHAT??? I don't know- maybe it's the difference between seeing it live and seeing it on TV- but I found it to be a concept that was lacking in too many ways to be considered the best (let alone among the best) I get that the white room challenge is all about not necessarily being an interior design- and more about showing how "out of the box" one can think- but I swear the judges send such conflicting messages on this. I would have put Stanley's room at the bottom, not at the top.
Stanley WAS HORRENDOUS! Ok, so he did something different with the furniture but it lacked in color and concept. I've come to the conclusion that the white room wasn't necessarily supposed to be livable, but he still pretty much presented a white room on it's side. ICK! And that sculpture that "saved" him last week was pretty much the one he brought with him to the show just bolted to an opening. What was original and new about that? Oh well...at least some of the other designers did a nice job. I did predict that the Aussie would go home for his lack of "transformation" of the room. It did look pretty with the bamboo but...

Another thought (because I just feel like commenting)... ...it appears that the contestants didn't have two very necessary tools available to them. Bex could really have used a compound miter saw. And both Meira and Hilari could have used a nail gun. All three of them struggled with things that the right tools would have made all the difference.

My post disappeared! I was saying...this begs the question...why weren't there tools available? If there was a table saw, why wasn't there a miter saw? Or a nail gun? I think they were there, but they didn't know what to do with them. I think they were just clueless (as Hilari admitted). Others managed. OH! and you don't need power saws to cut PVC!This message has been edited. You are right about that- though I wouldn't want to use a hand saw to make a gazillion pieces to put in a screen!
Nor would I...but I DO like having 2 hands and 10 fingers! **Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning to dance in the rain**

I'm so sick of GG and VY. Who told them they were qualified judges of anything? Both are at best, hald *** decorator's and have no right making any judgement calls on anyone else's work. The way they went on and on about the floor lamp and the owls was so ridiculous, I wanted to put my foot through the TV. I have my eye on the best designer's. If and when these yo yo's see fit to kick them to the curb because of some silly accessory they used, I'll be tuning out of the show. I'm going to stop watching their "critique" of the shows and just watch the beginning and end to see who is let you. I also thinking having a new guest judge each week is totally unfair to the contestent's. From where I'm sitting the entire show is unfair to the contestent's and is only on the air to gain ratings since HGTV is too cheap to put on any decent shows for us to watch. That's my rant.

What I don't get is this is a challenge that all the contestants know will happen. They have a lot of time to think about their design regardless of where they shop because it is suppose to be a room that shows us something about them. They can certainly pick that out early on and then tailor it to what type of outlet they will shop. Obviously Danielle did that because she had a picture for her inspiration. Because of this beforehand knowledge everyones white room should be awesome. Sadly, they were not. Most were safe with maybe one interesting thing going on. I hate that Jordan left but it was the right choice because he did not do one thing that was "creative". I love his accent. And there were a lot of blah rooms. Stanley is fast turning into a one trick pony. Rachel and Danielle are visually creative. Luca is there for drama. Kris' room was slightly ridiculous but he got a safe pass. Whats up with that? None of the rooms looked $1000.00 worth.

Ff, I was thinking the same thing. Don't they even have a show on now called White Room Challenge? These designers know the challenge is coming and you'd think they'd have more ideas ready. One guy did admit that he had thought ahead of time, but about buying stuff from stores rather than making it from a hardware store. I also did think it was funny that they went to OSH when Home Depot seems to be a sponsor...LOL!

Riding off my criticism of WRC the series, if D.B. is He** bent on designers thinking outside the box, what is he grooming them for? Would you hire Stanley to re do your family room? (Hey Stanley does the sofa come with a grappling hook?) Where is D.S. headed? Call me persnickety, but this all seems so celebrity/personality driven. I'm not seeing interior design as the focus.Hence window dresser and set designer Antonio Ballatore. But considering D.B. wanted to be a graphic artist/illustrator for Disney, perhaps interior design was never truly the goal. And to be fair, the design in Design Star does not specify Interior Designer. It started out with more of a decor focus, but since David has become the most famous contestant it seems as though HGTV is more invested in characters. (please David, just once say "Oh Sammy" in your best Paul Lynde, please.)
Charles D I am in agreement with you - is D.S. suppose to be about interior design or a personality? Because of the time constraints on the projects (hours instead of days and weeks) it really is design on the fly - not anything thought out too hard or long. I understand that the show has to be that way and I understand that it is a contest. But a contest to be what -first they want you to "think outside the box" and be able to talk about it but it doesn't really have to look appealing (hence the winner from last year) so are you a designer first and personality second or vice versa? Maybe they should open up to allow other creative types like horticulturists or fashion designers to come on as contestants instead of just those related to interior design - and it seems like they have done that more this season than in the past. And no, I would not hire Stanley to do my family room or any other room for that matter.
I agree. The way they kept harping on the owl and lamp seemed like they were grasping at straws to have something to criticize. Almost like they are not allowed to have only good things to say! I don't think that Stanley will last long, as mentioned before, he is just another Antonio clone and I don't think HGTV wants or needs two so similiar "designers".
Where did Bex get the pennies for her wall art? If she didn't buy them at the store were they fair game for the challenge? just askin. Sometimes they go overboard on the dramatic tension thing. She couldn't cut a piece of pipe but to save the day she whips together two frames with no problem. They think about the white box design for years ahead and have the concept all down pat except-apparently, Justin and Luca. Hilari might have had a vision but didn't have the materials to work it out. Sadly I would have watched Justin's show.
Hmm. I think I'm of two minds about this. Even though I would never want the huge paint treatments on my own walls, I don't mind them for the WRC, because this isn't about livable spaces. Which should justify Stanley's room, but it doesn't in my mind -- because it seems to me that there should be at lease some nod to livability. ------------------------------------------------ I've been around...well, all right, I might not have been around, but I've been....nearby. -from "The Mary Tyler Moore Show"

I agree with the comments regarding Stanley's room. I like lighting effects when they are subtle and used in the right way, but I didn't care for Stanley's room. I expected him to be using lighting in some of the episodes because he used it several times in his portfolio when he was designing for businesses. I also expect we will see more metal sculptures from him. The designers focus on their strong points which is good, but they can't stop there. I will be interested to see who Stanley will be working with next week and the results.
I think the thing that bothered me the most about Stanley's room was that it had no sense of balance. I don't expect symmetry from the WRC- but I do expect that anyone who actually makes it to this competition should have a good sense of balance- and this room was decidedly off-balance.

OK, coming in late to the party - yes, I watched the show but my computer decided to get sick Monday night and I just got it back from the Geeks. I'm really afraid they're going to do the same thing with Stanley that they did with Antonio. No matter what Antonio did (that would have gotten any other contestant kicked to the curb) the judges oohed and ahhhhed like he was the best thing since sliced bread. I'm sad that this show is not really about "design" - but, as so many of HGTV's offerings, more about pushing the envelope and a bit of drama and personalities. Also agree with the poster who said GG and VY aren't qualified to be judges - altho the "guest judges" aren't either. It's still a fun show and I do tune in for an hour of eye rolling and laughter. What can I say?
Late to the party too. I have to say that even though I appreciated some of the rooms (agreed that Stanley's was not one of my favorites either), this season is sort of meh so far. Not loving or hating it. Kind of blah on it, actually. I am so sick of Vern and Gen by now that it is turning me off to the whole show. Even sunny, supportive David isn't making up for it. I don't even think it's about drama either. Let's face it, DS is not like it once was as far as that goes - Remember all the behind the scenes feuds going on between the contestants? So far, it's not about that at all. I think it's more about phoniness and plastic personalities than drama. Which is the way "reality" TV is going these days. Which is one reason Kardashian was probably chosen. Talk about the poster child for a phony plastic TV personality! Count me in as one who hopes they don't fawn all over Stanley this season and keep that Luca guy around just for drama.

I think Rachel did a great job and I'm really going to miss Jordan. I think Kris did a horrible job. It was an interesting concept, but he just wasn't able to pull it off. I hope he doesn't win, not a big fan.
i thought chris' room was poorly executed and he really didn't convey his idea very well. it was just messy and unfinished on the left and the right side was just 'eh'. rachel seems to be the leader so far. hope she doesn't peak and peter out.... danielle will be a force, hilari is interesting and liked her bit of glam.... stanley... no one can replace antonio! he is the champion of thinking out of the box! (as a side, antonio's father recently died...rip)
I like that the WRC is about transformation so in that respect, I get what the judges thought about Stanley's room, and also that's precisely why Jordan was eliminated. I also get that the temptation is great to make a really graphic impact in the WRC, but that doesn't equate to great design or even basic interior design. I don't care for graphics for the sake of graphics, and personally I think Danielle's off-center graphic was an error and not intentional. Rachel's graphic, on the other hand, was part of a conversation between that wall, the floor, the cabinet and the fashion drawing and it was a successful dialog. The rest of her room - the plants, etc. - were a snooze, though.
