I was TOTALLY SHOCKED that Hilari was let go. Her room was the only one that looked cohesive and luxurious. She was the only one who really did something creative with the walls. It was stunning. She was the only one who did something different with the door. No one else even painted their door or anything; and that's the first thing you see.
As for the space planning criticism, it was totally off base. She already had a beautiful sitting area and sleeping area. There was no need to fill every corner. By leaving the spaces around the bed, it allowed the soft, colorful fabric to frame the bed; and it added even more drama.
Regarding the criticism of her camera challenge: How many people would be able to get back on topic after something on camera falls down? Why wasn't she given a do-over when this happened? It isn't like HGTV is shown live every week!! Even the experienced hosts and designers have editing and re-takes. This isn't an audition for a new anchor. She did an awesome job; and she's wonderful and cheerful and natural on camera. The other two are always stiff and awkward and floundering. Hilari has that something extra special quality that is rare. She has genuine charisma AND gorgeous, original design talent. HUGE MISTAKE letting her go!!!

I totally agree with you. We probably need other judges next season. I don't know if I want to see this show anymore.

I agree with you. Danielle's bed was not inviting, and the layering of fabric was too much. Gen seemed to want us to think she knew what she was talking about.

Brittany's oversized light fixture? It did nothing for the room.

Hiliary's bed showed well in the space and every corner of a room doesn't need anything in it.

I am surprised and disappointed too. I was hoping the final would be between Hilari and Danielle. Hilari definitely had camera and decorating skills. I have preferred Danielle's style, but tonight's challenge left me wondering about all 3. I hope we see Hilari again.

Not sure I'll watch the final. The judges are ruining this program.

I am in utter shock and dismay with judges' decision to eliminate Hilari. It strikes EVERYONE I've spoken to who watches as bizarre and unsupported by our own eyes and by the judges' comments. She lost because of space on the side of the bed??!! She clearly won this challenge in design and video, and they've made a huge mistake. Something rings as rigged, something I never thought HGTV would do.

So much for having cultural and ethic diversity on HGTV.

In fact the more I think about it... The judges are liking following commands from the HGTV management. They have been keene for Danille since early in the competition. Doesn't matter who does what. HGTV wants another predictable cookie cutter host.

The judges didn't want a potential superstar like Hilari on "their" HGTV . . . feeling threatened by her obvious talent and charisma . . . so they went for bland and boring.

Brittany's light fixture drew attention to how ugly the gaping space above it was (where the tented fabric was left a big round blah). Danielle is morose and has no charisma--plus her bed was just plain and ugly.

SO sad this show doesn't have better judges. I like the idea of it, but have nothing but contempt for the judges after getting to "know" them during the past several seasons.

After these judges picked Meg last year, I'm not surprised that Hilari was sent home!! I would prefer to see Hilari on TV, not that redhead who needs to gasp for air after every sentence; don't even watch her design show; and I was in shock to see that Meg was a judge on last week's show! ew

I, too, was shocked that Hilari was sent home because I really thought she would win. On a personal level I like her better than the other two.

Now,on to the fairness part of it: Each one of these women are talented and each one of them could do a great job of designing a space. Someone had to go home - and yes, I do think from the outset they have pretty much decided who they want - and the pickiness of this little detail or that little detail was only to support the "decision". They could have picked on problems in any of the rooms. They had TWO DAYS to do this - and all of them, IMO, presented their talents well.
Hilari will be back - she is too talented and bubbly and confident not to be in some way. We've seen contestants (runnersup) from past seasons have shows of some sort on HGTV, and I'm pretty sure Hilari will be joining them.

Alright HGTV. You'd be smart to bring Hilary back on her own show. She has a very watchable style and lovely design sense. In a few weeks I'll be moving to an historic zip code and I will offer a huge Queen Ann house she can use as her muse if space is an issue. Is there such a thing as contemporary Queen Ann? Please don't deny us the opportunity to enjoy a new program with unique style and fun from Hilary.

You are so right. The other two are always stumbling in front of the camera, not that they can't learn, but Hilari is a natural. Plus she's got design talent as well.

If I were to choose the room I'd want to stay on my fantasy vacation, it would have been hers hands down. It was beautiful, and I'm not into all of those colors but the way she did it was so tasteful.

Surprised and disappointed by the judges decision to eliminate Hilari. I was so underwhelmed by Danielle's room, I was sure she'd be sent packing. I don't care if Vern personally likes global "mish-mash" chic, or whatever it is called. Time after time both Vern and Goiter complain if a vignette is not "contemporary" enough. It seems they can only relate to trendy. I thought Hilari's room was very luxurious and high end looking, while Danielle's cow hides and ethnic rug spawled around the floor and cheap Indian carvings looked very "dorm room import shop".

What Hillary did:

She walked us through the space talked about her design and invited us into a luxury bed. It was suppose to be a luxury fantasy room and I could see the fantasy.

The comments were off. The space on the sides of the bed were not a big issue. I have been in expensive hotels where there is space around the bed. The panels on the bed made you feel separated and appear to have your own bedroom space. It was very pretty and inviting. She had the best attitude and HGTV producers gave the appearance that she worked well with everyone. Now I will change my mind maybe if we are given the opportunity to see the clips that were edited out.

Daniell's room was not a luxury fantasy by any means nor was Brittany's room.

If Hilary does get her own show, let's hope it is not relegated to an off time slot (Secrets of a Stylist just began a 2nd season today at 9:00 ET.)

I did like Brittany's original bed design with storage. And thought Vern's comment on her photography was a bit harsh. The same with Gen on the purple drapes. I thought they added to the luxury of Hilary's room.

I'm so upset that they sent Hilary home! Danielle cries everytime something goes wrong and she hasn't even finished some of her rooms! Britney is good but I didn't care for her huge bed that was on rollers. Why did they make such a big deal about how the bed can roll around?! I didn't care for all the layering of fabric in the floor of Danielle's room. And what was the big deal about making sure it had that special wood on the bed when all was said and done, all you could see was the part painted grey that really didn't match anything in the room?! Hilary is a great designer and she seemed like a "real" person!

I too thought the judges choice was rediculous. I will not watch a show hosted by Britney, but Hilary was who I was sooo looking forward to watching. She was talented, funny and had a great presence. The other two are talented but Britney's personality is too prissy and Danielle seems like she is stoned or something. This show is going down hill, except for David Bromstadt. Vern & Geneveive need to go! I disagree with the Meg comment though, I think her show rocks except she needs to expand out of Chicago!

What happened to Hilari is what happens every moment of everyday in this nation. I expected it.

Hilari was good. "Too good". That's the issue here. She is a good enough designer to have won and she certainly has the ability to carry her own show with respect to the personality department. And because of this, she is too threatening (for too many). It is still a fact. People who look like Hilari are allowed to be promoted only if they are mediocre or sub par. If they are good, it scares others who must now acknowledge a new standard -- one that they did not establish and one in which they do not compete well.

The elimination of Hilari is a tragic loss...like so many other tragic losses that take place each and every day in order to keep the brightest bulbs from shining their light. Then, we are led to believe that talent of this magnitude does not exist among those who look like Hilari. And because we are deprived of their contribution, we all lose in the end.

WOW!!!

Surprised and disappointed as well to see Hilary get the axe... Frown

However, I'm sure this exposure has done wonders for her career, and if we don't see her return to HGTV, I'm sure we'll see her somewhere fantastic.

We adore you, Hilary!

Looks like we have not seen the last of Hilari on HGTV. I was cruising around the Design Star page and clicked on the Design Star Blog. The first post was about Design Star All Stars. Hilari, along with Dan Vickery, Sparkle Josh, Kellie Clements, Leslie Ezelle and Tom Vecchione will be the contestants. It starts on July 31st.
I was surprised at how disappointed I was that Hilari was let go last night. She has really grown on me over the past few weeks. Her personality just seems made for TV and her designs are strong.

It has nothing to do with race or diversity. It's about design and ability to host a show. Stop trying to turn it into something it's not.

It may not be about diversity, but HGTV has gotten very bland and needs something new. I very rarely watch any of the shows because it is the same thing under a different title with the same boring designer even including Emily, Sarah, and Meg.

I totally agree. To me this show went down hill when they decided to change the original format. Clive added so much to the show and I love him as the host. In my opinion David is a designer, but he does nothing as a host. They need to revamp the show. Bring back Clive and dump the HGTV designers as judges.

Why are you so SURE race has nothing to do with it? Are you saying the ONLY reason 99.99% of HGTV's designers are white is because black people aren't capable of designing or hosting a show? How would you FEEL if 99.99% of the designers on HGTV were black? Would you not WONDER why that is so? Please understand, I'm not trying to pick a fight, I just want you to look at BOTH sides of the issue and not be so quick to DEFEND the indefensible.

OK - I'm really putting myself out here and asking what may or may not be a stupid question. I tend to see people as people and not necessarily what complexion they are - so, my question is, isn't Danielle of the same ethnicity that Hilari is?

Danielle's ethnicity isn't clear and regardless Hillary has better composure than both Danielle and Brittany.

Hilary's design was SO luxurious, and the only one IMHO which fit the design challenge of a fantasy bedroom. Who needs anything on either side of the bed in a fantasy?!? Not only does she do beautiful designs, but she handles pressure with more grace than any of the other contestants, as proven by her camera challenge with the falling screen. She's beautiful to watch and listen to, and she's a natural on camera, which is not true of the other two talents in the final 3. She's not afraid to take risks, play with color, play with materials. She has it all, and she's not like any other HGTV designer on the network. So why is she gone??

Because she's not like any other HGTV designer on the network?? Let's have a little color splash here, HGTV, and give this bright All Star her own vibrant show!

I don't want to make this about race either . Unfortunately HGTV has . I so agree with the statement about the 99.99% . I love hgtv . I watch it daily . I do believe this will now change . My husband and I had a discussion about this several weeks ago . I told him that I was afraid this may happen and that if it did I would have to find a new favorite channel to watch .
Now that I am hearing about the design all stars I am hoping that maybe they did this so that she could win that . And just in case you are wondering I am an over 40 white lady from birmingham alabama . Wrong is wrong ! When something is obvious acknowledge it .....

I do not want to make it about race but it appears that there is a bias working here racial or otherwise. Hilary was definitely the strongest especially this week. I predicted she would go when I saw whom they had her competing against. I hope the blond does not win but...

In an article from Huffington Post: per Vern Yip, "three African-American designers in the top four," stating Hilary, Danielle and Mikel. I am not seeing a deliberate race bias by eliminating Hilary. There could be other reasons, such as pre-chosen favorites.

Vern Yip, Tania Nayak, Ahmad (sp?) of Yard Crashers, the host of I Hate My Kitchen, have different ethnic backgrounds and I am sure there are others.

Back to design thoughts...
Those wall hangings didn't work. Wrong length, wrong color, not layered, no texture.
And David B. said in his review-it is a sin to cover up the windows, something I did not realize in the quick shots we got to see in the room. Her bed was gorgeous tho. How did she get something like that and the others had to settle for plywood ?
I thought Hilari did a very poor white room but she redeemed herself time and again later.

I only just caught up with this episode - I knew I would come here and see everyone upset about Hilary's elimination. I think the judges/producers/TPTB or whoever really makes the decisions here have been partial to Danielle from the get-go. She has messed up several times and somehow never gets sent home. I think this show is such total BS anymore. Hilary is obviously a great talent and a unique and interesting personality. HGTV would be totally stupid to let her go. She is going to be big one day, I predict. My mind boggles on how they could have sent her packing. I was rooting for her to win.

And no, I don't think her elimination had anything to do with race because their favorite, Danielle, is still in the competition and she is of African American descent.
