The production of the show seems to change a bit every year . . . and this year it feels bland and superficial . . .
Even when this was a how that I loved to hate (because the judges--and some of the contestants--were practically evil a few years ago), I still found it weirdly compelling.
I can't get a charismatic vibe from the contestants this year either. They are kind of a diluted version of designers we saw in previous years. There are too many women in this group as well--I felt that from the first episode . . .
Thank you C.C. for a thoughtful critique of this seasons D.S. I agree with many of your opinions. The ratio of men to women doesn't bother me, I like to see who can handle their own power tools without relying on others.
"Compelling" was a good adjective. I'm watching this show with a listless ennui, not caring who wins, just watching, waiting for something interesting to happen.
Something other than manufactured drama or Mom's of an infamous X-rated video daughter.

Perhaps it's just too early in the season for the really compelling part of the show to start. Although I'm with both of you in that I am quite detached from the whole thing and I don't foresee that changing. I can't say it was much better last year or the year before either. Gone are the days when this show inspired the audience to love or hate someone. I think in their constant push to attract a younger audience they are looking for "edgier" personalities, but I hate to say that from the POV of any age bracket this bunch will leave one a bit cold. Just sayin'.
I am with you guys about this year of DS being a little lackluster - even with the forced drama from Luca and the build up for Stanley (who did produce this week). After last year I said I wasn't going to watch this season, but here I am. I've decided the reason I am watching is because there just isn't that much design shows on HGTV and although the designs haven't been the best at least it isn't House Hunters! One idea would be that there would be different judges each season.
