Let's pretend for a moment that HGTV allows us to select the 3 judges for this season's show. Who would you select. Please submit 3 names.

Feel free to justify your choice.

Probably Vern (Architect/Designer), Carter (Carpenter/DIY Man) and a third rotating judge who is perhaps an organization/feng shui expert who understands not only how rooms look but how they WORK.

Delysia, did you know that Debbie Travis isn't a degreed designer? I belive it's been said by Debbie herself that the design work for her shows was done by someone else. She actually started as a model and went into TV as a producer/editor.

Usually not one to agree with good gardener, but on this one I have to. Other then Candice Olson not one of the people you listed are degreed. They are all what is called T.V. celebrity designers. Worst one of all is Nate Berkus. He is the one who coined the phrase "self-taught". A term he uses to give himself credibilty. I wonder if he would visit a lawyer or doctor who is self-taught. Remember if not for Ophra's producers having dinner with Nate by accident we would not be suffering him today. Leave the judges alone I like all three because they come from unique backgrounds in design related fields. Let's leave the celibrity self-taught designers to host the design shows we watch between soap opera gigs and their movie deals.

Michael Payne, Lisa LaPorta, and Candice Olson. REAL designers with years of experience in their field.

I think they should bring in 3 very experienced professional, mature (older) degreed Interior Designers or Instructors, who DO NOT work for HGTV or any of it's affiliates. That way, you can be sure of impartial and accurate judging. I think it would put any of the current HGTV designers at risk of being extrememly ridiculed, and loosing credibility, like it did with Vern Yip. Vern is a great designer and wonderful person, but because of his decisions on Design Star, he lost many fans. Design Star is a wonderful program, but needs a lot of restructuring.

Good point, Cheshire. I didn't think of that when I listed Candice, Michael Payne and Lisa LaP. On the other hand, if there are good, licensed, experienced designers out there, I wish they'd sign on HGTV with their own program.

Vern may have lost credibility because of his DS judging. Possibly we hold him up to a very high standard on Deserving Design because of his judging?

Hmmmmmm, that's a hard 1; but I think they should pick designers who know their work & which design looks good & which doesn't. I also think they should have judges go visit their work in person, that way, each contestant can get a fair chance.
My pick for judges from HGTV are: Vern Yipp, David Bromstead, Carter O, & a couple of others.

I agree with the idea that judges should not be HGTV employees/affiliates. Also, it is important that judges do not favor design styles that align with there own personal styles. I think that Vern tended to do that in DS1 and DS2. I also think that Martha and the other female judge (I can't think of her name)tended to agree with Vern due to the fact that he is an interior designer and they are not. Perhaps all three judges should be interior designers, all with different personal styles. That would allow for more impartial decisions while judging.

One I do like is Candice. Just the other day I wondered, if she could do what the design contestants do. Design on a much lower budget.
Perhaps not to the quality we see on her shows.
I think maybe for that reason she might be a good judge. The reasoning explantion is not all that good.
As for the others, I don't know. I like the idea of those coming from other design star episodes. And from other channels. Bring some older ones. Like Kitty B. or busy Chris Maddox.
And artist like Mary Engelbreit. Or book authors like Philips.
I really don't know.

I am influenced by the design shows a few seem to care for.

This is a good idea, and I agree with this poster. The judges should not be HGTV employees or affiliates. And I would also appreciate some maturity and professionalism as well.

Linda, the designer from the Dream Houses.

Joe Ruggiero

Mary Emmerling

Then maybe, just maybe, the Design Star would be someone who knows more about style than going to Ikea, Home Goods and Pottery Barn to mimick their showrooms and catalogues.

I vote Candice for her luxury designs.
Christopher Lowell...for sensibility, budget designing...plus he needs to come back on the scene, I thought he was great. For a 3rd judge I think Lisa Laporta would be a good choice. JMHO!

Candice
I don't think that there are any other "real" designers on HGTV

Hayak, Olson and Kenneth Brown.

I think it's too risky to use HGTV employees and affiliates as judges. That hurts the judges and the credibility, in the long run.

I wonder if it would work to make us judges............ If only it was at the same time the episode runs. Then our opinion would matter.
I shall keep the lips shut this season about Vern and my opinion of his rooms.

I would like to express a wish for someone figure out how design star could be done so that people with real gorgeous talent end up at the end. Not just those who made it halfway to the end and then on on their merits. The good ones we root for should somehow make it to the end also.

Oh you know what I am not saying............

So what makes it to the near end is exactly what we want to watch. Not just personality, etc. Has shown their talents all along, so we know what were getting the whole show through.

Not an original thought.

I think the show lost a lot of credibility last year with the final choice.

They need judges who are all in the business and who can be impartial. They need to choose the best due to design skills instead of personality.

I do feel that any of the major designers from HGTV would be good to use on a rotating basis. I do like Vern, but I wonder if someone outside of HGTV would be better in the long run. They would probably be more objective in judging.

Unfortunately, we have the same 3 judges. I just hope they don't blow it again. How could they select Kim Myles? I'm scratching my head, wondering. Confused

It does give one cause to be concerned. Although Joe Ruggiero would be an excellent choice, I don't believe that he would want to be associated with the show in question.

Delysia, I'm afraid you're probably right about Joe Ruggiero.

Mr. Ruggiero would not be into paper projects, 99cent store products and mdf. I bet he is not a fan of IKEA, Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, or ZGallerie either. It is all beginning to look the same.

I can give you one of the names...

OldManWalt (me)

People who have shown good judgment. Wink

BTW, if I was a judge, there is a possibility that no one would win. If there is no outstanding contestant, then there will be no new show host.
