I was really disgusted with the judging tonight, particularly Vern and Genevieve. I think it's because design has so much to do with personal taste. For instance, I really have little respect for Vern's and Genevieve's design taste--much of what they personally design is downright wrong and ugly in my book. I don't appreciate the way they sneer and pass judgment either (especially when I think they're just plain wrong). I think Bromstadt is a great TV personality and host but I wouldn't let him anywhere near my house--his "color" taste is horrible to me. But at least he's not condescending like some of the judges. Anyway, I would have kept Stan in the competition. The guest judges were great.

You're right - much of it is personal taste, and as we've all commented, GG and Vern sneer at things that they themselves have done on previous shows.

However, I completely agreed with the judges' decisions tonight. Rachel and Stanley should have gone home.

At this stage, for once, we have several very good designers - I have no doubt that any of htem could give clients a great space.

I have a feeling this year's winner is going to turn out to be Hilari.

I think Vern's designs are pretty much on point, but I don't like Gen's style. And you are right about design being a personal taste. Stanley should have gone home. The hands as door handles was a mistake along with the blue paint. Stanley is great at the execution, but not at the design.

I was surprised that the two designers I thought should go home actually did. Looking forward to next week!

I think you are right these designers are the best final four in several seasons. They were my picks, so I am happy!

You may be right about Hilari. I thought her choices in the kitchen tonight were very good and her camera challenge was the best. Plus she was able to get along with Stanley, I am so glad his choices didn't get her sent home.

It was definitely time for Stanley to go home. In my opinion, he is very much like Antonio, who won Design Star 2, and we certainly don't need another designer like him. Stanley seemed like a nice guy, but not a designer that appeals to the majority.

It's so hard to say who will win. A woman has won the past 2 seasons, so it may be time for a man. Mikel is a good designer, but doesn't seem to have the personality to be a host. I really like Brittani, but she is a carbon copy of several other designers already on HGTV. I'm leaning toward Danielle. Time will tell.....

I also look for Hilari to win--I like her personality and she is very talented.

I really disliked those "hand" pulls. Whimsy is one thing, those just looked garish to me.

Remember a few years ago on the kitchen challenge the judges were very specific about ensuring that the appliances were showcased for the final photograph ... not to mention how they would have a piece of fruit or an ice cream flavor to guide their design vision.

That was a ridiculous season, but amusing to recall. Seemed like the episodes were longer then--at least they seemed to jam pack a lot in the episodes, now the episodes are kind of bland!

Away on vacation and almost missed DS - would have been waiting for the dvr/ondemand version, early next week.

Anyway, had been away from the pc and logged on to quickly check e-mail. Cruised over here to hgtv and saw the thread title above so opened it up. Oops - my bad, I know. The first words I saw (naturally) were something about tonight's judges' decision plus Rachel and Stanley.

Given this thread's title, I didn't expect any discussion of the current episode - and wouldn't have, even if it had been a normal Tuesday, non-holiday week, evening, i.e. when I would have been a little more cognizant of the schedule but possibly out-of-town on business, in an unfamiliar/different time zone.

If everyone can do us time-zone challenged people (permanently or only temporarily challenged) a favor and put the word "Spoilers" in the title, even if/when you don't believe we'll need it, it's very much appreciated.

P.S. I simply played it cool and didn't really respond when the rest of the gang guessed correctly, after the design process but before judging began. If I had selected two pre-episode, they (honestly) probably would have been my top 2 guesses to go, anyway. I'll bet that's true for most of you, too.

IMO most of the design end of the business is based on theories of functionality and space planning that are universal.A well planned scheme including proper balance of darks and lights, smooth and coarse, horizontal and vertical can be applied to any style and be a success. Ugly rooms are usually indicative of bad planning and a lack of true design skills, as well as a lack of understanding of the decorative arts in general. If a room is truly "ugly" it was put together by someone who either doesn't know the rules of good design or is purposely ignoring those rules.(and deconstruction of an art form should never be attempted by a mediocre artist)

Most of these contestants just start spitting out ideas even before they have analyzed the space, its function, or the relationship of the parts to the whole. That's not how professionals work, so this show and its processes aren't indicative of the business of interior design, it's just a contest with people jumping up and down shouting "Look at me! Look at me!"

True - however, with only three days to get things done it's understandable that they're not taking the time any of us would actually take to analyze a space and come up with a good plan of action.
I still think that any of the remaining contestants could, and probably do, come up with decent rooms for their clients.
Even tho we could probably walk into a space, Charles, and have a few ideas instantly I know I would be hard pressed to turn out something I'd be proud to put my name on in 3 days given all the other pressures, plus having a camera in my face the whole time.
Would love to see the Superior Vern Yip and the Smirking GG to this themselves - from start to finish exactly as the contestants are required to do it.
No, this isn't great interior design when it's all said and done, but at least it's not HH or HHI.
