Great Room, No TV? Sign In/Join
posted
I love the Great Room, and really like the Iron Gates over the fireplace. But I don't see a TV anywhere in that room. I realize there is a TV upstairs in the balcony but it would be nice to have my family together Down Stairs in the Great Room to enjoy watching TV. I have serious problems going up and down stairs as I'm disabled.

Has anyone seen a TV in the Great Room?

Thanks,
Phil

Nope. One in master bedroom, one in the guest suite, one in balcony and one in the playroom in the garage area. 4 total, but none in the Great room.

Phil you can come visit when I win...I'll put a TV to the right of the fireplace...don't worry about those stairs! You can also sleep in the daybed in the entry (if the gators not there). There ya go! Anything else?

Good luck y'all,
Ricci

A TV would probably "compete" with the fireplace. I figure if I moved in, I would want to move around and change a lot of stuff. What might look the best doesn't necessarily function the best in the flow of family activities.

We were going to put a TV over our fireplace but then realized it would be too high for comfortable viewing. They recommend placing a TV at eye level so you won't have to strain your neck while watching.

OK, I've been thinking about the TV going in the Great Room. I'm not sure this would work without the dimensions and all. But, if the Gates would work upstairs as functional doors as you enter the Balcony Loft Room and then put the TV over the fireplace downstairs?

I hate to rearrange my place as soon as I move in, but I'm just thinking out loud here. I will post pictures for you all once I get situated and possibly move the gated doors. But the Gates are a must have, I love them so they have to go somewhere in my home. I'm just trying to figure out where to put my TV in the Great Room.

Any other ideas?

Phil

I wouldn't put a tv in the Great Room. The tv's elsewhere are fine with me. I picture the Great Room as being the central hub of the house, so a nice stereo or music system would be fine for entertaining or just socializing.

I agree the great room would be GREAT without a tv....I barely watch it anyhow and love the lack of distraction from a conversation room. I could watch my sports in the upper deck...Big Grin. Gator service could bring snacks upstairs...Razz

Phil, those iron gates weigh several 100 pounds and were carefully installed with a crane and put in place with special spikes to keep from damaging the fireplace. Good luck on moving it.
With all those other other TV's why would you need one in the Greatroom? I presently have a TV in my family room and Master, none in the living room. Guests come to visit you, not the TV and the guest rooms are upstairs, so those TV's would be very accessible and all you have to do is walk upstairs to watch it with them or if you have a group for a sports event, the one in the playroom is 60 inches.

nursejudy suggests the exercise is healthy, so stairs are great.

With all those windows in the FR, I think TV viewing would be very difficult. I imagine that the light & the view are marvelous. Seems a shame to keep the curtains drawn. Especially since there are other options.

The two gates make the two coffee tables make sense. Change one you would have to change the other. IMHO
But you could put a tv on a swinging arm ( like I have in my great room)...and put it on the wall right of the fire place. Green wall with the two chairs in front of it. Would swing out of the way, but adjust to viewing when wanted.

Good idea Vinnie, now our Phil has a TV in the great room, no stair climbing and everyone is happy.

What do you all think of the hanging napping beds in the playroom? I think they are very creative and i love the way they look and hope no motion sickness as I am looking forward to trying that 60 inch TV and relax on one of the beds. See i do like TV, just enjoy views better.

just thought of something....I could just put a small tv in the kitchen to have on while I'm cooking or by myself. When someone comes, it would be good to go downstairs to the big one or up stairs. I didn't think about the lighting glare but I bet the afternoon sun would create havoc watching in the great room.
I guess I would just need to "live" there a while and see what works the best! LOL

Those are made for Mr.Bill. Ants, snakes and gators can't climb up on it because there are no legs. (One day you should ask Mr.Bill about his Hook Hand)

I think you are correct Vinnie, he could use that hook and to swing himself up as he is very short. keep those gators away from our Mr. Bill.

Nurse Judy and Vinnie dabomb

The garage/playroom is my favorite room. I love the hanging day beds and especially the great colors in that room. So YES Judy and Vinnie I'd spend alot of time down there catnapping, watching TV and refereeing the many games my daughters and grand daughters would be playing. WOW, that sounds good y'all..

I was stationed at Parris Island years ago which is fairly close by and I spent a lot of time in Charleston. I never saw any Gators.....But I think they Import Sand Fleas.

I think that is one of my favorite places in the home as well. Linda so cleverly decorated it. My children and grandchildren would love that 60 in TV and ping pong table. There is a neat outdoor grill just outside which I would love.

My daughter was stationed at Perris island also, but I was happy when she was transferred to camp Pendleton. Now she is a social worker MSW and LSW.

yes, the grill is lovely but impractical where it is....think about it...the food, spices etc all are in the kitchen (UPSTAIRS) you'll go down to start the grill, back up if you forget something, back down to check on it, back up to sit at the table (although there are tables on both decks).
you either need a kitchen area downstairs or a smaller grill on the upstairs deck.
I know what!!! I just got a new 4 burner gas grill for myself at the black Friday After Thanksgiving sale....I could just put that one upstairs on the deck to use for "quicky" through the week grilling and save the big one for company grilling!

I have a 6 ft grand piano....I think it would fit in that corner to the left of the fireplace where everyone was talking of putting a tv. It looks like that is the only place with a solid wall so I guess no tv in there for me!

But heck, all my daylight hours will be spent bike riding all over the island and I guess I'll have to take up kyacking. (sp)

Something really bothers me about that playroom...

While I think it's a neat way to use the space, I can't help remembering all the pictures of damaged shore houses post-Sandy. The ones that did the best were up on stilts like the DH.

Doesn't furnishing it with expensive toys kinda defeat the purpose of the stilts? Yeah, you do get warnings before hurricanes, but I can't see schlepping a pool table or 60" TV upstairs for the duration. Not without an army of strapping youths to help.

Just my 2 cents.

Hi Music, did you miss the Table and chairs in the area of the grill. As you mentioned the kitchen is way upstairs, it might be a good idea to find a place for spices near by.

I was just remembering sending insect repelent with my daughter to boot camp there as we were told about the sand fleas at Perris Island.I guess it helps make those Marines tougher, but she did not care for them as she mentioned they were unavoidable.

Nurse Judy,

YES the Sand Fleas were unbelievable at Parris Island. We were issued insect repellant but were not allowed to use it until we got to the Rifle Range in 3rd Phase. The problem was, they attacked your ears and you certainly DID NOT reach up to scratch or knock them out of your ears. The Drill Instructors were JUST WAITING for anyone to try to get them out of their own ears.

I've been looking more at the Great Room and the more I look at it and think about it. I just couldn't change that room by adding a TV. The room is too pretty as it is, so you're right! I couldn't mess it up with a TV. I'd have to figure out another way without disturbing that room...........

yea, that's what I meant....I could use the nice big grill when company comes becaue then someone else would be there to watch the cooking. As for me, just putting something on to cook through the week, I would need a grill upstairs too because I pre-heat it, go do something, put the meat on, go back & tend to what is cooking on the stove or get things to carry out for the table, turn meat over, go back in & finish up the sides....finally take meat off & ready to eat. I've never had the luxury of just "relaxing by the grill with a drink in my hand" and dinner is magically ready! LOL

I agree Music1871, it would be nice to have a grill upstairs as well for those days when you would want to enjoy a quick dinner.

Phil, I know there is a solution for a TV on that floor and fit in well with the decor.I liked Vinnies plan as it could be made to show only when pulled out for view. We just need to think outside the box and blend with the decor or there is the possiblility of going back to the homes original plan with the elevator and access any of the TV's you choose to watch. The 60 inch in the game room would be great for those who enjoy a superbowl party and as was shared a few post up while you are enjoying the breeze napping on the hanging beds..

My daughter will enjoy the greeting. She was actually chosen as chaplin for her group in bootcamp and since she gave me a few gray hairs in high school, I felt well done. Aside from the sand fleas, the gas chamber where you had to unmask while inside and then reapply was a challenge to her claustrophobia, but she made it.

I was thinking the other day how much my 2 grandson would enjoy those bunk beds upstairs and their parents could enjoy the guest rooms.
