Does anyone have a quick and easy pattern for either a knit or crochet skull cap? I want to make a couple of yarn wigs for Halloween costumes (red, yellow, and maybe a black one).

My basic skull cap type of hat is crocheted using a size G hook (larger if you're using bulky yarn, maybe an I) and can be adapted for either a child or an adult:

Ch 4, slp st to form ring.

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as first double crochet here and throughout), 11 dc in ring, slp st to join. (12 sts)

Round 2: Ch 3, dc in same stitch as ch, 2 dc in each dc around, slp st to join. (24 sts)

Round 3: Ch 3, dc in same stitch as ch, dc in next dc, *2dc in next dc, dc in next dc. Repeat from * around, slp st to join. (36 sts)

Round 4: Ch 3, dc in same stitch as ch, dc in next 2 dc, *2dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc. Repeat from * around, slp st to join. (48 sts) NOTE: IF THIS IS FOR A CHILD, CONTINUE TO ROUND 6.

Round 5: Ch 3, dc in same stitch as ch, dc in next 3 dc, *2dc in next dc, dc in next 3 dc. Repeat from * around, slp st to join. (60 sts)

Round 6: Ch 3, dc in each remaining dc around (no increase) (48 sts-child, 60 sts-adult)

Round 7-12 (10 for child): Repeat Round 6.

Last round (edging): Ch 1, sc in each dc around, slp st to join. Fasten off. (Alternative: Ch 3, skp next dc, slp st in next dc. Repeat around. Fasten off.)

That's it. I can usually do a child's hat in about 30 minutes and an adult hat in about 45 (if I don't let myself get interrupted). Hope this helps.
