It looks like art nouveau pottery to me. So probably around late 1800s to 1920?

It's marked Japan on the bottom along with MG on top of each other.Sounds like the right time frame. Came from my husbands great-grandparents.We have a cookie jar,&teapot with a slightly different design. Yesterday I found this teapot a thrift store for $1.00!

    Wow, what a wonderful deal!

Art nouveau pottery is not exactly the usual thrift store find-- way to go!

When in doubt, see if you can find one on Ebay. Lots of knowledgable sellers there.

I did. I only found one item- apparently the person selling it didn't know any more about it than me. It was listed as "brown teapot". ConfusedWith no other info.

According to my Japan collectors book. Anything stamped M.G Japan is from the 1960's It can be stamped or paper label, the paper label was late 60's stamped early 60's Value On teapots with this stamp and era are worth from $12.00 to $30.00 I did not see this teapot but another one like it done in blue. Hope this helps. I have over 200 collectors books so if you have anything else you need to find out about just ask. Tina

I know nothing about this teapot but my beloved grandmother had a similar one. i would date it from the 1920's or so. On the other hand, its difficult to question the authority of a collector's book. It just that my grandmother rarely bought anything after she originally set up housekeeping in 1911.

Yeah, the book poses a dilemna. I know that the ones we already had came from my DHs great grandparents who died in the 1930s and have been passed down till they came to us.
Does anyone have anymore tips about how this can be?

Some times we pick things up and buy them and in the back of our mind we Think they are collectable because our grandmother had them but thats not always so true. I have done this my self. My collector books is only a base line I use them for reference only. A pc can be worth as much money as someone is willing to pay for it.So if your teapot is only worth 12 to 30 in a book, someone might think its worth 100 dollars or some one might think its worth 2 dollars. I go to auctions several time a month and you would be surprised what people pay for things that are torn up so forth so on.But then again its something they want. I dont mean to offend anyone. But its the truth.

Oh no, not offended at all, please don't think so. Smile. We don't want to sell ours. I was just curious about them, what they are, what they're worth, etc. In fact, they have been passed on to DS2 by my MIL and are at my house for safe keeping as he is in college. I don't think our originals are marked but the one I bought is. Maybe its a newer repro and thats why its in the book? Doesn't matter to me what they are or are not worth as they will stay in the family.I was just excited over my $1.00 find and wanted to know more about it. I plan to give it to DS2 to display with the original pieces when he gets a home.

I don't think it's from the 1920's... looks more like a 1950's or 1960'2 model to me. They were made by USA company, weren't they? Also made bowls, etc.

Maybe the one I found at the thrift store is from the 50s-60s, but I know for a fact that the older unmarked ones that came from my husband's family are not. They belonged to his great-grand parents who died in the 1930s. My MIL told me how they were used daily, where they were kept in the house, etc.I bought the one at the thrift store because it matched the family ones we already had.The old ones aren't marked, and it is. As I said previously, I don't care about the monetary value, they are worth more as sentimental pieces. And I am not disputing any info that anyone has been kind enough to share with me. Smile
