With the price of gold skyrocking there is alot of talk about people selling there broken unwanted gold jewelry. I have old settings of rings broken chain or two and just might want to do this. Has anyone done this? Do you take it to a store or is it best to go to a wholesale jeweler. I have a store that advertises they do this just don't know if that is the right thing to do to get top dollar.
Thanks for any info.

My sister responded to one of those ads and her experience was horrible! She had some very expensive pieces she was willing to sell and the dealers offered her less than half what she had paid for them and in some cases told her the settings were clearly "old and out of style" when in fact she had bought them brand new just a year before. Many of the pieces were platinum. She took her pieces to a reputable jeweler who appraised them much higher. In other words, these people are going to give you rock bottom appraisals and tell you your stuff is junk.

This was just on the local news yesterday in Seattle, maybe you could do a search? Sorry -can't recall which station but it was Herb Wisebom (sp) (KOMO??)

Only thing I caught was to get an appraisal for any antique jewelry cause it might have more value than just the gold.

The ads on TV would be bogus in my opinion, who would mail gold in an envelope & expect to get fair value.....

Sorry your sister got burned!

A reputable local jeweler who casts their own pieces may give you the best price for scrap. Often you can negociate to use the weight in pieces to create or get credit toward a new piece of jewelry.

I totally agree that the the mail order commercials and newspaper ads, are a joke. You would no doubt get better prices at a pawn shop.

I've done this twice within the last few months. I'm thrilled. I combed thru my jewlery box, and gathered up all the broken chains and outdated earrings. The first trip I got $110. The second time, my mom had some old pieces that she never wore, along with an old wedding ring(not hers) and a charm bracelet. We got over $500 for the lot. All you have to do is walk into any reputable jewelery store or coin dealer in your area. They will weigh it in front of you, and examine it to see if it is gold. They will not accept gold filled pieces. If you don't like the quote you are given, you don't have to sell it. I'm happy with our experience, and wish I had more to sell Smile

Hi, i've gone to the same jewler for over 20 years, I was shocked when he told me how much gold items he's been getting, but with the econemy, he showed me alot of things, he handed me this long chain not really a chain it had like oval barrels on it in white gold, i couldn't believe how heavy it was, he said how much do you think this will sell for, i said 20 thousand, he said 18 thousand. only thing i'd watch for is vintage jewlery, i get it at yard sales, i have a loop, and right now i'm going through my friends, man friend, who's mother passed away, she had 3 sister, and she never left the house without her rings, earrings ect. i search vintage sites daily, even if it doesn't look like much you never know. like coro jewlery doesn't seem to have very big price but i have found some on sites at have suprisengly high prices. when you go to your jewler ask how much he's paying on the ounce.
my jewler took out all my items with stones and gave them to me for no charge

I found a gold bracelet and sold it for scrap for $50. I would go to a long established reputable dealer in your area (the bracelet I sold was not able to be repaired)
