Recently I was given an "old" dresser my uncle had in storage. I was amazed at how beautiful it was! It looks like an antique to me, but I am cluess as to whether it is, or what style/type of wood it might be. Anyone have any ideas?

It's a lovely piece. I think in most parts of the country it would be classified as an antique but I think it may date anywhere from 1900 to the 20's. It's hard to tell from the picture.

Thanks! I do love it. In the evenings, I turn the lights down and just look at it. It makes me feel like I've stepped back in time when I go into my room. I know that's kind of silly but there it is!

    Martha,
I believe you are correct. If it is an antique, it's a "baby antique"...if it's not, it very soon will be. I found this great site that is basically a primer about antique furniture. I found everything I could want to know and then some. As far as I can tell, it is post-civil war, most likely turn of the century or later. I found out (from that site) what some of the features are called, and that there is a combination of styles going on here (which was apparently common with early 20th century manufactured furniture. So, it's not a chippendale or some sort of revival piece...but I absolutely love it anyway!

Pull out the drawers and look around inside the carcass, or on the bottom of the drawers and you may find a manufactures label.

Sorry, I don't know the answer to your question but thought I would comment on what a beautiful piece this is. You should be very proud to have such a nice piece on display in your home.

If you pull out one of the drawers turn it over and look where the sides and back go together is it nailed with like very small nails or glued, or does it have like a cut in dove tail in it, early pcs. and most pcs. before 1920 were cherry but after that most stuff was made out of poplur wood stained with thinned down malassess.

It is oak and definately an antique. The mirror is held in place with what is called a harp. Hang onto it it will only increase in value, and do not refinish it unless you have a passion for that. Refinishing will drop the value immensely. It is indeed beautiful. Once a month with lemon oil is a good idea to keep clean, and moist.
