Sorry to bug everyone again but my 15 yr. old saw a t-shirt that she wanted but couldn't find it to buy. She went to Michael's and bought fabric paint and a t-shirt and was going to do it herself but I told her to wait until I asked here. When you are using fabric paint on a t-shirt should she put something behind it to hold the material in place? I thought it would stretch when she tried to write with the paint bottles. Should she use something like contact paper to hold it steady? Would the paint crack when she tried to put it on and the material did stretch? Does fabric paint run? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm sure you'll get more responses, but in my limited experience with these, I just used a magazine between the t-shirt fabric layers so the paint wouldn't bleed thru. Otherwise the paint pretty much just went on easily. I'm sure she can find a video for it on you tube also.

When I've painted on shirts I put a piece of stiff cardboard (mat board, etc.) with fine sand paper on one side inside the shirt and secure the shirt by wrapping the rest to the back of the board to prevent slipping. I prefer sand paper to something like contact paper because the sand paper is porous and will not cause your paint to puddle underneath.

As far as fabric paint goes, like other paints they are all different. I prefer and use So-Soft fabric paint because you don't have to heat set it and remains flexible wash after wash.
