This is chair I found in my neighbors trash. (they were moving). So I figured why not try something fun. I am so not a painter. I really wanted the stars smaller but those suckers were hard! LOL

When I had this project in mind, I thought I would antique it. But, now that I see it I am not so sure, kinda like it bright.

Question:
Should I antique it?

Choices:
Yes
No

You did a beautiful painting job. I love the chair. I would love it on my porch with my giant firecrackers and door wreath. I would probably antique it.

Thanks Tiny!

And I would love to see your giant firecrackers and door wreath! Any pictures???

Thanks Holley, that is what I was thinking it needs to be toned down. I have 4 of these chairs and Tiny gave me an idea and I might just put 2 of these on the front porch.

Not just 4th of July, but Memorial Day and don't forget Flag Day LOL!

Thanks Krafylady I try. I really wanted to take a class at Micheals or AC Moore, but I understand they are not available anymore! Just my luck.

You did a great job painting. I did something similar on a wooden chair several years ago but I didn't seal it as well as I should have and it's got a lot of "weather" on it. Don't you love decorating for the 4th? I might antique it but I like it bright also.

Super painting, the chair looks great. You should be proud of yourself, that is quite an
accomplishment. Thats quite a large project.

Love the chair, wish I wasn't a painter like YOU. Wink
I like it as is but think it would also look great antiqued (sp?)
I guess antiqueing it would depend on where you are going to put it and what is already there. Traditional with bright white trim on the house leave as is .... on the other hand if your house and porch are are more subdued or have a prim look you would want to antique it.
Which ever you will have a wonderful piece I predict will get lots of positive comments.

Love your chair! You did a great job and the stars look good! (Stars are hard to get right) Sister and I curb shopped a chair and small table quite a few years ago. Never did a thing with them untill her DD went off to school. The 3 of us painted them in much the same style and we did put a stain on, then quickly wiped most of it off and rubbed the rest in real good. I can see yours with a pot of bright red geraniums stting beside it!

you did a great job on the chair. I do think you should antique it. I do however have to admit I have this thing about when flags are used in some instances. Such as dish towels, rugs, towels, and probably sorry to say your chair. I think it is disrespectful to use the flag in this way. Walking on it, using it as a rag, sitting on it, etc. I am so sorry but I need to express this feeling. Your painting is lovely though...

Thank you for your opinion, and I really do respect your opinion. I see your point and it made me stop and think I had no idea that it could be seen as disrespectful. I thought I was being patriotic.

Here are some of my thoughts on this.

All the regulations of the flag code have some reasoning to them and ways they came about.

The problem is with this - is that it all happened almost 100 years ago. - times have changed.

I feel the flag code should move in accordance with this and I would like to see the flag code more fitting to modern times.

We must first see the difference between the actual flag and things with a design to look like a flag.

The only things with a flag design on I take exception to is flag napkins, paper plates, and flag toilet roll - and other throw away items.

I see nothing wrong with flag designs on items which aren’t going to be thrown out or deliberately mistreated.

I have my Flag flying 24/7 and yes it is illuminated at night, to give its due respect.

So we will have to agree to disagree on this.

I love your chair and think you should leave it as it is. The antique look is pretty also but if you intend to put this chair outside the colors will fade anyway and look more natural. That is just my opinion tho.I did a chair a year or so ago and it is still very pretty and weathered. Of course it went to a freind so I don't have it but she still has it.

As for disrespecting the flag. In some instances I agree but in some I don't. It is just a matter of opinion and i do many patriotic crafts and don't really see anything wrong with it. We are all entitled to our opnions tho. Thats what makes our country great.

I am not trying to start anything here. My own opinion is that the chair is a decoration, you should be proud of it, and the work you have done on it. It is something different when it come's to defacing the american flag, by burning it tearing it, ect. I myself decorate for the 4th, with some craft items that I have made over the years. It is a great chair, our craft is what this forum is about.

OOOCH! I am not arguing here OK? Smile
I think painting things red white and blue with stars and/or stripes is just using wonderful colors and designs and in my case being patriotic!
If I were to use our flag to decopage or make a cushion that would be highly disrespectful and to me offensive.
When I use the painting methods as stated above I am showing my honor and love for our flag as I am sure 99.9% of other crafters are too.

That one was hard to vote on either way it looks nice. Your painting is great. Too bad you didnt find two of them so you could antique one and leave the other one bright.
