Fabric paint question... Sign In/Join

MANY years ago when canvas slip on shoes 1st became available I thought they were boring, so I doctored them up with colored markers.

Now I am seeing, on etsy, that they are selling Tom's shoes all prettied up with fabric paint and/or fabric markers. I would like to do that for myself with my Tom's. I have no experience with today's fabric paint. Do you have recommendations about brands in paint and markers??? Thanks a bunch.

I have used fabric paint, but it's been a while back. I used the Folk Art brand, and I guess I wasn't careful enough when laundering, because it lifted in various places.

I teach fabric painting and would like to recommend SoSoft fabric paints. They cover and blend well. You can also purchase them on line for JoAnn sells them too. They will not crack or lift off. You will be happy with these. I don't have lots experience with fabric markers what I have heard is that they will fade quickly. SoSoft does not fade and washes well.
Hope this helps.

I second the DecoArt SoSoft fabric paints.

I rarely paint on fabric but when I do I use these. They are extremely durable and flexible so they won't crack, fade, or lift even after several washes. Great stuff!

Thanks for your replies!! I am experimenting with different markers now for line work, and later will need paint so thanks for the hints about SoSoft.

Do a search on Pinterest for painted Tom shoes. Wow! There are some cool shoes there.

I would highly recommend a Identi-Pen it is a permanent marker with a fine tip and works perfectly for any type of fabric. You can hopefully see the line work I did in this sweatshirt. Did you know that if you use this marker and a piece of tulle and place the pattern under the tulle and draw your pattern on the tulle, then you can lay the tulle on your fabric and use the pen again to put your pattern on any fabric. I have found this is the best way to transfer to fabric and get a sharp design.
