I was just reading another post about the sharpie ink pens bleeding when varnished.
And I do remember having that horrible experience.
But it has been a long time since I have painted and I was asked to paint some cowgirl boots for a friend(flat wood cutouts). And as you know there is a ton of stitch lines on cowgirl boots! So here I am with an "Oh my" what do I use. I am looking at purchasing Loew's:

BUT I would really like to use a fine line "paint" pen. Please give your ideas and opinion.

I am thinking the sharpie bleeds because it is an ink formula rather then a paint...but that is a huge guess on my part.
Do people that do pen and ink paintings use a sealer on their projects? I think those are done on paper?

cowgirl boot pattern that I need to paint:

I have used Sakura Permapaque dual-tip markers for many years...love them! They are the only markers I use for detail work with my painting. They have both a bullet point and a chisel point for doing a variety of line work and can be used on a variety of surfaces, even metal & glass. I own these markers in every color they make, including the metallics. Other than using them for line work they are great for personalizing ornaments, writing or detail on small projects, or even signing your name to one. I highly recommend them.

There are many different types of ink including inks that won't bleed, the Sakura markers are a perfect example of that. Reason being is that the Sakura markers are waterproof, Sharpie ink is not. The above Sakura markers are also fade resistant, Sharpie ink is not.
When you use the Sakura Permapaque markers you will think you are using a paint pen because that is exactly what their application looks like, paint, not ink.

*When doing pen & ink projects it is always an option to seal the project when finished. Sometimes it has a lot to do with the surface the project was done on (porous or non-porous).

Rainee, I have a couple questions.
Where are you purchasing these?
And have you ever apply a varnish or sealent over them? {if you have used a sealent I would be interested to know what worked for you when using this product.}

I bought the majority of my markers at Joanne's using coupons. They were sold in sets...primary, pastels, metallics, etc. But you can find them pretty much anywhere that sells art or office supplies.

I use both brush-on and spray varnishes over these markers depending on the project. I prefer water based Krylon Satin spray finishes or water based brush-on satin varathanes by Rustoleum or Minwax. All finishes can be found at most variety, craft, or home improvement stores.
When using a brush-on finish I am still in the habit of spraying the project first with one light coat of matte sealer to set the ink before brushing over it. After early years of trying to find a marker that wouldn't bleed when varnished over, what can I say....old habits die hard. lol But I'd rather be safe than sorry.

*The matte spray is the secret to using Sharpies. You need to lightly seal them with a MATTE spray first before varnishing. There is something in semigloss/gloss varnishes that reacts with the ink and causes it to bleed. I wouldn't use Sharpies anyway because the ink fades and discolors over time.

I have this pen and use it all the time especially for fine lines and stitch lines. They do sell it at Michaels in the calligraphy section. Here is a great video on how to use it. I highly recommend this tool.

Can't wait to see your finished boot. It should be beautiful and hope you find the right thing to use. I have used the Sakura pens a long time ago and seems like I always sealed my item after it was totally dry.

As soon as I can find the cord to hook my camera up to my puter I will download the pics of the ornies I have done and you can see the fine lines I did for the snowflakes on some of them. What did I use? I hated trying to do them with brushes. They always seemed to have that one bristle that flared out and made a mess. I was sitting there thinking what should I do when I noticed a little phillips head screwdriver - only about an inch and a half to two inches long - sitting on my table. For the heck of it I picked it up and stuck it in the paint (just the tip of it) and tried using it. Yes it did take a few times to get the lines on because it doesn't hold paint like a brush so I kept having to dip it in again but for short lines like what you say are stitching it should be ok. Just find something with a pointy end and use it. I loved that little screwdriver. Saved me a ton of hair I would have probably ripped out doing those 50 ornies lol. And I didn't have to spend the money on those paint pens. I like them for some things but they always seem to dry out on me too fast for the money that they cost.

Had to come back and comment. DJ - just watched that video you posted. Made me laugh. That pen was actually kind of like my little screwdriver but without the well. I will definitely be buying that only because it will save me the pain of dipping that screwdriver over and over lol. Wouldn't care usually but when you lift and dip to do one longer line you sometimes get a little tiny blob in the middle - that pen will take care of that problem. Thanks for posting that!

In my painting classes, they taught us this: always lightly spritz spray paint first. After a couple of very light coats, you can then spray a little heavier.

wish, i had known about this product yrs ago, prob could have save a bunch of moola...

I can not find this painting pen. I was to Michaels & the girl thought I was nuts. I then tried Joannes & they also said they never heard of it. I looked on the web site but there wasn't anywhere to buy it.

Darbyd...I would let these stores know that carrying this product would be a benifit to the store. If they carry paint and brushes then they need to carry the next most important item..."a liner".

Good idea. I made a print-out of the pen included a picture also. I asked my Mom up North if she could find it & no luck.
It must be something new. I ordered mine & can't wait to get it.

This isn't a new item. It is just that most of these craft stores no longer carry the painting supplies that they use to. There use to be a large selection of painting/pattern books and now in my area you are lucky to find a couple on the shelf.

I have come to the conclusion that some store employees really don't know thier store merchandise at all. I just purchased another one at Michaels and it is not in the painting dept it is where the sell the calligraphy supplies. Doesn't make sense to me, however at Michaels that is where it is, at least in my store. Also they have moved the "Diamond Dust" to fine arts, and that makes no sense either. Anyway I hope you all will love this fine writing pen it does work great. Enjoy.

You are so right DJ, I hope to give mine a try after Christmas. I thought these liners were made originally for some type of egg decorating.
It has been a very long time since I have painted, I hope I can get the "ink consistency" down pat. LOL

just got mine in the mail yesterday...now to figure out some time to play... never enough!

Still waiting for mine to arrive. I have been putting off finishing these ornaments figuring it would be easier to do with this but if it doesn't come soon I guess I'm back to my little screwdriver lol.
